Louise J. Hewes

Vigil service for Louise J. Hewes, 91, will be 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Hewes died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Dec. 30, 1908, at Granada, Colo., the daughter of Fred and Katherine (Oberest) Marks. She attended schools in Deerfield and Lakin, graduating from Lakin High School and later taking nurse's training at St. Anthony Hospital in Dodge City.

Mrs. Hewes worked as a registered nurse in private duty for eight years, as the hospital supervisor in Clinton, Okla., for three years, and worked part-time for a doctor in Cimarron. She moved from Cimarron to the family farm near Ingalls and then into Garden City.

Mrs. Hewes was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church of Garden City and St. Dominic Altar Society and was a lifetime member of Ladies Auxiliary VFW Roberts-Rohrbaugh Post No. 7828 of Cimarron. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting and watching television.

On July 20, 1939, she married James D. Hewes at Denver. He died Nov. 6, 1989. She was also preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a son, James M. Hewes, Ingalls; and three grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Dominic School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Isabel Brungardt

Vigil service for Isabel Brungardt, 82, will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Brungardt died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at her home in Garden City.

She was born March 19, 1918, at Sitka, the daughter of Alois and Emma (Wasinger) Quint. The family moved to the Garden City area in 1930. She received her education in Sitka and Holcomb schools.

A homemaker, Mrs. Brungardt enjoyed reading, gardening and being with her family. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Senior Center of Finney County

On May 26, 1936, she married Frank Brungardt at Garden City. He died Dec. 6, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Adam Brungardt; two sisters, Betty Jane Brungardt and Alvarita Brungardt; a brother, Herman Quint; and her twin brother, Norbert Quint.

She is survived by a son, Gary Brungardt, Mendota Heights, Minn.; two daughters, Patricia Hartley, Revenna, Neb., and Sharon Shepherd, Oklahoma City; five brothers, Richard Quint, Wichita, Raymond Quint, Thomas Brungardt, Robert Brungardt and Gilbert Brungardt, all of Garden City; two sisters, Shirley Richmeier and Sister Bertilla Brungardt, both of Garden City; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Home Health and Hospice or the St. Mary School Endowment Fund, both in care of the funeral home.

Mary Ruth Nuzum

Funeral for Mary Ruth Nuzum, 82, a former Garden City resident, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Southern Baptist Church, Fort Scott, with the Revs. Gary Bass and Dan Nuzum officiating. Burial will follow in Woods Cemetery near Redfield.

Mrs. Nuzum died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Medicalodge of Fort Scott.

She was born Feb. 18, 1918, at Fort Scott, the daughter of Frank and Rebecca Ann (Moore) Canaday.

On Dec. 15, 1938, she married Aldon Jones at Girard. They moved from Garden City to Fort Scott in 1980. He died Oct. 17, 1994. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Nuzum had worked for a couple of years as a cook for Fort Scott Manor and operated a children's day care center in her home prior to her retirement. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church and was a former treasurer of the American Association of Retired Persons.

She is survived by five sons, Cecil Nuzum, Grand Junction, Colo., Gary Nuzum, Ingalls, George Nuzum, Jim Nuzum and Darrell Nuzum, all of Garden City; two daughters, Sybil Standley, Fort Scott, and Deborah Tomlin, Garden City; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours are from 7 to 8 tonight at Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel, Fort Scott. Memorials are suggested to the Fort Scott Jubilee, in care of the chapel, 201 S. Main St., Fort Scott, KS 66701.

Lawrence N. Graham

LAKIN - Lawrence N. Graham, 73, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born Aug. 25, 1927, at Old Santa Fe, the son of George and Edith (Nelson) Graham. The family moved north of Deerfield when he was a child and he attended country schools, later attending Deerfield High School.

On June 3, 1945, he married Shirley Sower. They continued to live on the farm north of Deerfield until moving to Lakin in the late 1970s.

Mr. Graham was a member of Deerfield United Methodist Church and helped organize the James Draw Watershed District. He enjoyed computers, genealogy, boating, camping and traveling, especially in his motorhome.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Larry Graham and Roy Graham, both of Deerfield; a daughter, Dona Graham, Windsor, Colo.; two brothers, Walter Graham, Denver, and Leonard Graham, Winslow, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Deerfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Warren Hett officiating. Private family burial will take place later.

There will be no visitation. Memorials to the Lawrence Graham Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.

Timothy M. Sharp

HOLCOMB - A wake service for Timothy M. Sharp, 25, of Herington, was 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Donahue Funeral Home Chapel, Herington. Mass was to be 10 this morning at St. John's Catholic Church, Herington, with the Rev. Mark Wesely officiating. Burial was to follow in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, McDowell Creek.

Mr. Sharp died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, from cystic fibrosis.

He was born April 6, 1975, at Junction City, the son of Dennis G. and Margie A. (Tully) Sharp.

Living with his mother and stepfather near Herington Lake since 1981, he graduated from Herington High School in 1993. He was a junior at Emporia State University where he studied graphic and commercial designs, and was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Bass Club of Salina. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and liked drawing wildlife scenes.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Margie and Jim Jones, Herington; his father and stepmother, Dennis and Janet Sharp, Holcomb; his grandparents, Marietta Tully, Manhattan, Marvin and Marguarite Sharp, St. George; his stepgrandmother, Velma Jones, Herington; a brother, Jeff Sharp, Holcomb; a sister, Lori Lee, Herington; five stepbrothers, Bryan Jones, St. Louis, Steve Jones, Wichita, Rusty Ballentine, Oxford, Miss., Eric Sippel, Seattle, and Matthew Sippel, Holcomb; a stepsister, Lindsey Sippel, Holcomb.; two nieces and a nephew.

Memorials may be sent to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, in care of the funeral home, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS 67449-3038.

Virginia Buller

Funeral for Virginia Buller, 53, of Turpin, Okla., will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Turpin High School Gymnasium. Her son, Ryan Buller, and the Revs. Stanley Lehnert and Ervey Unruh will officiate. Burial will be in Turpin Mennonite Cemetery.

Mrs. Buller died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center, Liberal, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

She was born May 3, 1947, at Emporia, the daughter of E.W. and Florence (VanHorn) Smith. She attended Emporia High School, graduating in 1965. She received her degree in foreign languages from Emporia State University and her master's degree in special education from Kansas State University, and did her student teaching at Northeast High School in Wichita.

Mrs. Buller taught French at Newton High School for two years, and taught English, Spanish and French at Turpin High School for 28 years, from 1971 to 1999, where she was also involved with the Quiz Bowl and the SMART Program. At the time of her death, she had been teaching Spanish and French at Liberal High School.

She was a member of Calvary Mennonite Church at Liberal where she had served as treasurer, youth group sponsor and Vacation Bible School and most recently as song leader. She also belonged to Order of the Eastern Star, National Education Association, Kansas National Education Association, Chi Omega, Delta Kappa Gamma, and C.A.R.S. Southwest.

On July 31, 1971, she married Ervin R. Buller at Emporia. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Ryan Buller, Stillwater, Okla.; two daughters, Suzanne Buller, Stillwater, and Melissa Buller, of the home; her parents, Emporia; and a brother, Van Smith, Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 8 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Mortuary, Liberal. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Virginia Buller Scholarship Fund (for Turpin students) Bank of America, in care of the mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67905.

Harry J. Specht

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Harry J. Specht, 93, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mr. Specht died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.

He was born Oct. 22, 1906, in Lee County, Iowa, the son of John Theodore and Laura (Handrich) Specht.

A Scott City resident since the 1930s, moving from West Point, Iowa, he worked for K-N Energy for more than 15 years before retiring in 1971. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

On Nov. 24, 1932, he married Mary E. Daugherty in Scott County. She survives. He is also survived by a son, H. Gene Specht, Wichita; a daughter, Betty Ives, Scott City; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marie A. Johnson, Knoxville, Iowa, and Thelma Hardcastle, Royalton, Ill. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, John and Lester; and three sisters, Lucille, Irma and Mabel.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
