Arnold Edwin Schmitz

Arnold Edwin Schmitz, 84, of Alma, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Alma Manor Nursing Home.

He was born Sept. 11, 1916, at Alma, the son of Paul and Mary (Noller) Schmitz. He attended schools in Alma, graduated from Alma High School and served in the 561st Army Air Corps as a radio operator during World War II in the Asian Theater.

In 1938, he began his business, Alma Gas and Equipment Co., with his partner, Joey Diehl. They ran the business together until Mr. Schmitz became the sole owner in 1975. In 1980, he sold the business.

Mr. Schmitz was past president of the Kansas LP Gas Association and Alma Rotary Club, a member of American Legion Post No. 32 at Alma, a former member of the Alma City Council, Chamber of Commerce and Wabaunsee County Planning Board, and served for 12 years on the Alma Grade School Board and USD No. 329 School Board, serving as its first president for two years.

On Dec. 24, 1942, he married Iris E. Hanson at Alma. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, J.E. Schmitz and Jim Schmitz, both of Alma; a daughter, Mary Olsen, Garden City; a brother, Clarence Schmitz, Destin, Fla.; a sister, Viola Hastings, Emporia; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral was 1 p.m. Dec. 12 at Stewart Funeral Home, Alma, followed by burial in Alma City Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Wabaunsee County Ambulance Service, in care of the funeral home.

Michael Ray Cowles

Memorial service for Michael Ray Cowles, 42, of Garden City, will be 3 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Liberal.

Mr. Cowles died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus, Wichita.

He was born March 24, 1958, at Dodge City, the son of Howard Dean and Joan Mary (Sauer) Cowles.

He is survived by a son, Charlie Cowles, Dorrance; a stepson, Michael Young, Wichita; a daughter, Stevie Young, Wichita; his father and stepmother, Howard and Lei Cowles, Garden City; his mother and stepfather, Joan and Bob Katz, Deerfield; a brother, Chad Cowles, Wichita; two sisters, Pam Cowles, Tulsa, Okla., and Tonya Slattery, Dodge City; 10 stepbrothers; five stepsisters; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Broadway Mortuary, Wichita, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles N. Nodine Jr.

LEOTI - Funeral for Charles N. Nodine Jr., 61, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial, with military honors conducted, will be in Leoti Cemetery.

Mr. Nodine died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Wichita County Hospital in Leoti.

He was born June 25, 1939, in Logan County, the son of Charles N. and Amelia M. (Dechant) Nodine Sr.

A lifetime resident of Wichita County, Mr. Nodine was involved in the cattle industry until beginning work for the City of Leoti in 1984. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and VFW, a charter member of Leoti Lions Club, had been involved with Leoti Little League for several years and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

On Nov. 22, 1959, he married Genevieve J. Shaw at Wheeler, Texas. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Walter Nodine, Alberta, Canada, and Waide Nodine, Leoti; a daughter, Jolene Berning, Marienthal; a brother, John Nodine, Leoti; three sisters, Gloria Hughes, Leoti, Charlene Gasswint, Pratt, and Amelia Monger, Fort Laramie, Wyo.; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University or to Wichita County Hospital, both in care of the funeral home.

Winifred R. Serson

ULYSSES - Funeral for Winifred R. Serson, 85, of Ulysses, will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Southern Baptist Church, Ulysses, with the Revs. Kevin Ross and Wayne Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Hugoton Cemetery.

Mrs. Serson died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

She was born April 30, 1915, at Spencer, S.D., the daughter of Alvin and Carrie V. (Matkins) Rockafellow.

A resident of Ulysses since 1991, moving from McAllen, Texas, she was a homemaker, a pastor's wife, and a member of First Southern Baptist Church.

On June 12, 1942, she married George F. Serson at Spencer. He died Feb. 21, 1995.

She is survived by a daughter, Kay Coulter, Ulysses; a sister, Thelma Gernand, Leesburg, Fla.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Jennifer Irene Crowder

Jennifer Irene Crowder, 54, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at her home in Manitou Springs, Colo.

Crowder was born Feb. 27, 1946, in Liberal to H.O. and Mae (Fuller) Neese.

She attended Liberal High School and took one year of classes from the business college in Dodge City. She later moved to Colorado where she worked in the county treasurer's office in Colorado Springs for 18 years.

Crowder met and married her husband, Everett Crowder, in Lakewood, Colo. He survives.

Other survivors include one son, Doug Crowder of Manitou Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Brinda Yates of Manitou Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Jerry Neese of Liberal and Dean Neese of Garden City; four sisters, Margaret Hinz of Liberal, Charlene Miller of Hardesty, Okla., Nancy Pittman of Turpin, Okla., and Doris Gordon of Canute, Okla.; and one grandson.

A brother and four sisters died earlier.

Private services will be arranged at a later date.

Doris Verna Rose McDaniel

ULYSSES - Doris Verna Rose McDaniel, 85, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, Ulysses.

She was born Nov. 10, 1915, at Crowell, Texas, the daughter of Willie Winfred and Gem Vera (Keeton) Rose. She had been a resident of Ulysses since 1948, moving from Cherokee, Okla. She attended public school at Pawnee, Okla., and graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor's degree in May 1938. She taught school for 25 years, 18 1/2 in Ulysses and six and a half in Oklahoma. During the last year of teaching, she received a certificate of honor presented by Emporia State University for the Kansas Master Teaching Award. She retired from teaching in May 1978.

She was an active member of the Ulysses United Methodist Church, a past matron of Ulysses Chapter No. 471 Order of the Eastern Star, a past president of the American Association of University Women, a past president of the Monday Study Civic Club, a past president of the Past Matrons Club, all of Ulysses, and an active member of the Southwest Chapter of the American Diabetes Association.

On Dec. 22, 1940, she married Jack C. McDaniel at Duncan, Okla. He survives.

Other survivors include a son, Mark Alan McDaniel, Ulysses; a brother, Jack Rose, of Holton; a sister, Laverne Dick of Bartlesville, Okla.; a granddaughter, Amy Kathleen McDaniel of Ulysses; and several nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, Greg Alan McDaniel, and a brother, Maurice Rose.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at the Ulysses United Methodist Church with Dr. Max Clayton and Rev. Tim Warren presiding. There will be no public visitation or viewing as cremation has taken place. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 3210 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67208 or the Ulysses United Methodist Church in care of Grant County Bank, P.O. Box 388, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Burkhart Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, is in charge of arrangements.

Rojelio "Roger" DeLaRosa

Rojelio "Roger" DeLaRosa, 81, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 26, 1919, in San Gabriel, Texas, the son of Geronimo and Epifania (Rodriquez) DeLaRosa. Mr. DeLaRosa moved to Deerfield in 1946 from Texas and lived there until 1965. He then moved to Garden City and had lived here since.

He married Marcelina Barron on July 17, 1942, in Lakin. She died on Nov. 29, 1991.

Mr. DeLaRosa worked for Western and National Alfalfa for 31 years and retired in 1984. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He enjoyed working on cars, working in his yard and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters and two brothers.

He is survived by three sons, Robert DeLaRosa, Richard DeLaRosa and Jimmy DeLaRosa, all of Garden City; a daughter, Rebecca Perez, Garden City; a sister, Micaela Bernal, San Antonio, Texas; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren.

Vigil service will be 8 p.m. tonight with Spanish rosary to follow at St. Mary Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at St. Mary Catholic Church, the Rev. James Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery.

Memorials to the American Cancer Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Friends may call today until 6 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home.
