Lt. Col. Richard E. Hineman, D.V.M.

DIGHTON - Lt. Col. Richard E. Hineman, D.V.M., U.S. Army (Retired), 79, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, in San Antonio.

He was born near Dighton on Feb. 17, 1921, the son of George Elmer and Nancy Esther (Hutchins) Hineman.

After serving 20 years in the U.S. Army, he worked as a veterinarian for 19 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He enjoyed fishing, being outdoors, and sharing fishing adventures with his family and friends.

He is survived by five children, Melita Kay Hineman and Parker Crenshaw Hineman, both of San Antonio, Gary Joe Hineman, San Diego, Richard Alan Hineman, Sacramento, Calif., and Teresa Diane Koehler, Lillian, Ala.; a sister, Rita Jean Townsend, Garden City; two brothers, Kalo A. Hineman and Herbert T. Hineman, both of Dighton; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Olive Lorene (Webster) Hineman; a brother, Donald J. Hineman; and a sister, Rachel M. Hineman.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North, San Antonio, with the Rev. Jim O'Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Mission Burial Park North Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to San Antonio Hospice Inpatient Center, 9303 Cinnamon Hill, Bldg. C, San Antonio, TX 78240.

Ethel Marie Beougher

HEALY - Ethel Marie Beougher, 80, of Gove, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus, Hays.

She was born July 31, 1920, on the family farm near Healy in rural Lane County, the daughter of William Harvey "Harv" and Pauline (Haverfield) Anderson. She graduated from Gove Rural High School in 1938.

Mrs. Beougher had been a resident of Gove for 59 years, moving from Healy. A homemaker, she had worked as a librarian, was co-owner and operator of the Gove Cafe during the 1950s and had been a bus driver for Wheatland School District No. 292.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Senior Center, all at Gove; a former member of the Strike & Spare Bowling League at Oakley and the former Stitch & Chatter Club; and a former board member of the Gove Community Improvement Association.

On Jan. 22, 1939, she married Clellan O. Beougher at WaKeeney. He died June 27, 2000. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond Anderson, Robert Anderson, Carl Anderson and John Anderson, and an infant brother, George Anderson.

She is survived by four sons, William "Bill" Beougher, James "Jim" Beougher and Steve Beougher, all of Gove, and Philip Beougher, Hays; three daughters, Shirley Walker, Lathrop, Mo., Judy Zerr, Salina, and Suzi Goetz, Dodge City; two brothers, Bill Anderson, Warsaw, Mo., and Cecil Anderson, Brighton, Colo.; two sisters, Laura Alexander, Cash, Ark., and Joan Long, Council Grove; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Gove, with the Rev. Paul Woodall officiating. Burial will be in Gove Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter, with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the church, Gove City Library or the Gove Community Improvement Association, all in care of the funeral home.

Betty Collins

CIMARRON - Betty Collins, 64, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Memorial Hospital in Abilene.

She was born Dec. 30, 1935, at Cimarron, the daughter of Henry Cornelius and Dena (Ratzlaff) Koehn. An Abilene resident since 1994, moving from Manter, she was a homemaker.

On Dec. 6, 1968, she married Homer Collins at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by a son, John Blevins, Johnson City; two daughters, Diane Easterday, Wichita, and Juanita Jane Blevins, Abilene; two brothers, Bob Koehn, Kansas City, and Larry Koehn, Montezuma; two sisters, Edna Koehn, Cimarron, and Rogena Wilson, Wichita; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Burkhart's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Cimarron, with the Rev. Curt Ensz officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to Church of God In Christ Mennonite, Cimarron, in care of the funeral chapel, P.O. Box 786, Cimarron, KS 67835.

George Ray Slocum

HUGOTON - Funeral for George Ray Slocum, 59, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Revs. Rod Hinkle, Robert Bailey and John Wright officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Mr. Slocum died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

He was born July 19, 1941, at Wichita, the son of Paul and Mary (Tyler) Slocum.

A Hugoton resident since 1955, moving from Sublette, he was the owner of the Jet Drive-In in Hugoton for 22 years. He was a former city councilman and belonged to First Christian Church.

On Oct. 24, 1973, he married Lana Mitchell Kerbow at Hugoton. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Trent Slocum and Mark Kerbow, both of Hugoton, and Shayne Slocum, Kansas City; a daughter, Kim Clark, Tyrone, Okla.; his parents, Hugoton; two brothers, Curtis Slocum, Hugoton, and Duane Slocum, Higley, Ariz.; four sisters, Mary Lou Peterson, Hugoton, Pauline Nelson, Oklahoma City, Imogene Bressler, Rolla, and Karen Brown, Joplin, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two children, Michael Kerbow and Natalie Odell.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.

Manuelita L. Candelaria

Rosary for Manuelita L. Candelaria, 101, a lifelong resident of Carrizozo, N.M., was 7 p.m. Thursday at Santa Rita Catholic Church in Carrizozo, with the Rev. Dave Bergs officiating. Funeral Mass was to be celebrated at 9 this morning at the church. Burial was to follow in Our Lady of Guadalupe Cemetery, Carrizozo.

Mrs. Candelaria died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Casa Arena Blanca Nursing Center in Alamogordo, N.M.

She was born Dec. 27, 1898, at Rebenton, N.M., and was a member of Santa Rita Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son, Joe Candelaria, Madera, Calif.; three daughters, Bella Killingbeck, Carrizozo, Lupita Brewer, Killeen, Texas, and Juanita Black, Deerfield; a sister, Navorra Romero, Tucson, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren including Patsy Ambriz, Deerfield, and Viola Ortiz and Beatrice Tavarrez, both of Garden City; numerous great-grandchildren including Martha Gamez, Deerfield, and Hector Torres, Lakin; and several great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Candelaria; and two sons, Demetrio and Lloyd Candelaria.

Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home, Alamogordo, is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Marshall A. Brewer

ULYSSES - Funeral for Dr. Marshall A. Brewer, 81, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Mr. Brewer died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born March 11, 1919, at Dodge City, the son of Tobe and Agnes (Hickok) Brewer. He graduated from Grant County High School in 1937, from Garden City Community College in 1939, and from Fort Hays State University in 1942 and graduated second in his class in 1946 from Kansas University School of Medicine.

He served his internship at the University of Kansas from 1946-47, and was on the faculty of the University of Kansas School of Medicine from 1954-55 as a preceptor in medicine.

A lifetime resident of Ulysses, he had been a medical doctor there since 1947. In 1996, he sold his medical clinic to Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital before his retirement in 1997. Through the years, he had delivered more than 2,000 babies. The Emergency Out-Patient Department addition at the hospital was dedicated to him in 1991, and on March 22 of this year he was honored with a life membership to the medical staff of the hospital for his years of association from the groundbreaking of the hospital to the present.

Dr. Brewer was awarded Grant County Citizen of the Year in 1979 and Pioneer of the Year in 1998, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, belonged to the American Academy of General Practice since 1958 and the American Academy of Family Practice since 1972, and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha scholastic fraternity in 1944. He also raised and raced thoroughbred horses, raised channel catfish and liked to garden.

On June 22, 1945, he married Roberta H. Brown at Wamego. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Marsha Brewer Reynolds, Houston; two brothers, Charles Brewer, Pioneer, Calif., and Paul Brewer, Ulysses; a twin sister, Marjorie Collins, Denver; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital or Western Prairie Care Home, both in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Velma E. Huseman

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Velma E. Huseman, 92, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Miss Huseman died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City

She was born Feb. 14, 1908, at Ellsworth, the daughter of William Frank and Christina (Winkler) Huseman. She received a bachelor's degree from Kansas Wesleyan and a master's degree in social work from George Washington University in St. Louis.

A Scott City resident since 1952, moving from St. Louis, she was a homemaker. She belonged to First Christian Church, EHU, Garden Club and CWF, all at Scott City, Alumni of George Washington University, and was a former 4-H leader.

She is survived by a brother, Arthur Huseman, Scott City; four grandchildren; a sister, Helen Krupp, Ellsworth; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Park Lane Nursing Home, the church or Scott County Health Department, all in care of the funeral home.
