William B. Russell

William B. Russell, 68, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at his home in Spokane, Wash.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Russell of Spokane; four daughters, Elizabeth Williams, Garden City, Deborah Russell, Oakland, Calif., Mary Sundquist and Caroline Sundquist, both of Yakima, Wash.; a son, William Russell, Riverton, Wyo.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral is planned for Feb. 10 in Spokane.

Memorials are suggested to the Yakima Valley Community College Foundation, in care of Elizabeth Williams, 2924 Squire Place, Garden City.

John C. Oswalt

Funeral for John C. Oswalt, 72, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with Dr. R. Michael Lake officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Mr. Oswalt died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Jan. 20, 1929, at Ponca City, Okla., the son of Harry L. and Irene (Chapman) Oswalt. He graduated from Garden City High School in 1947 and attended Western State University in Gunnison, Colo., for a time.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant in the F86th, as a radar observer, from 1951 to 1955. After graduating from Southwestern College, Winfield, in 1957, he returned to Garden City and was a major stockholder and sales manager for the family business, Oswalt Industries.

After the business sold in 1969, he started a land development business known as Hillside Land Corp. Among other developments he developed Labrador Ridge in Garden City and named the streets after his and his neighbor's dogs. He later sold real estate for Regan & Company.

Mr. Oswalt was a member of Elks Lodge No. 1404 of Garden City. He enjoyed fly fishing, hunting, going to retriever dog field trials, flying, jazz music and dancing.

On Sept. 13, 1960, he married Iann Hastings at Tucson, Ariz. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Alan Oswalt, and a daughter, Sydney Hill, both of Garden City; two brothers, Robin Oswalt, Calvert, Texas, and Harry L. Oswalt Jr., Arlington, Texas; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Bonnie Stahl.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials to the John C. Oswalt Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Frank J. Bremenkamp

Frank J. Bremenkamp, 56, of 1505 E. Spruce St., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 14, 1944, at Colby, the son of Henry G. and Grace (Renner) Bremenkamp. Due to a series of traumatic injuries in his early life and midlife, he became disabled and spent his last 12 years at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. He loved to listen to music and sing.

Survivors include a brother, Henry G., Colby; six sisters, Dorothy Anne Neargardner, Corpus Christi, Texas, Jean Trybom, Garden City, Marilyn Finan, Overland Park, Carolyn Hengst, Chetek, Wis., Betty Schieferecke, Selden, and Charlotte Krimmel, San Antonio; six nieces; 12 nephews; and a special friend, Joe Brown of Garden City. He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece.

Mass of Christian burial was Jan. 20 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Colby. Harrison Chapel, Colby, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to St. Dominic Catholic School in Garden City or to the donor's choice.

Lester Proehl

PIERCEVILLE - Funeral for Lester Proehl, 80, was to be 10 this morning at Pierceville Federated Church, with the Rev. Charles Wagher officiating. Burial was to be in Pierceville Cemetery.

Mr. Proehl died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Nov. 26, 1920, at Americus, the son of Ernest and Gladys (Vermilyea) Proehl.

A Pierceville resident since 1974, moving from Ingalls, he was a farmer. He attended Pierceville Federated Church, was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a life member of the VFW and the American Legion.

On Nov. 18, 1945, he married Vera Tietz at Americus. She survives. He is also survived by four sons, Russell Proehl and Allen K. Proehl, both of Pierceville, Lawrence Proehl, Garden City, and Steven Proehl, Cimarron; two daughters, Marjorie Frey, Emporia, and Naomi Holloway, Hutchinson; two brothers, Clifford Proehl, Mesa, Ariz., and Carl Proehl, Gilbert, Ariz.; two sisters, Dora Harris, of Canton, and Arlene Daharsh, Murdock, Neb.; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson; and a sister, Valeda Miller.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Lester Proehl Memorial Fund, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

Olivia Jordan Williams

Funeral for Olivia Jordan Williams, the 10-day-old daughter of Doug and Susan Williams of Eureka, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Eureka, with the Rev. Jim Bush officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery at Eureka.

Olivia died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.

She was born Jan. 18, 2001, at Wichita.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Anthony Billinger, Eureka; two sisters, Sarah Wright, Eureka, and Bray Hanson, Manhattan; her grandparents, Betty Yeadon, Garden City, and Stan and Sue Williams, Eureka; and her great-grandfather, Clark Coffman of Madison. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, George Yeadon.

Memorials are suggested to the Eureka Carnegie Library or the Midian Shrine Plane of Mercy, both in care of Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045.

George J. Clausen Jr.

George J. Clausen Jr., 78, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 25, 1922, at Danbury, Iowa, the son of George J. and Mary Bridget (Fitzpatrick) Clausen.

A Garden City resident since 1946, moving from Wichita, he had been a department manager for the Sears store in Garden City for 17 years. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, horse racing, woodworking, sports and spending time with his family.

Mr. Clausen was a member of the Catholic faith and the American Legion, a former member of the VFW, the Elks and the Eagles lodges, a past president of the Jaycees and a former business manager of the BJ Baseball Team, all at Garden City. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

On Sept. 19, 1942, he married Madonna Y. Wilson at Wichita. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Chris R. Clausen, and a daughter, Yondolan Gundlach, both of Garden City; a brother, Newman Clausen, Sioux City, Iowa; two sisters, Delores Carey, Sioux City, and Marilyn Allen, Henderson, Nev.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald Clausen and Burdette Clausen; and a grandson.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military honors presented by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Center for Basic Cancer Research or the American Legion, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Lenora "Shorty" Spory

Lenora "Shorty" Spory, 73, of Cedar Vale, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

She was born Jan. 14, 1928, at Kirksville, Mo., the daughter of Oscar James and Caroline (Wilkins) King. At a young age, she moved from Missouri to Keokuk, Iowa, where she lived for about 30 years. She graduated from Keokuk High School in 1945.

Mrs. Spory owned and operated several restaurants in Iowa and Kansas, including the Paramount Cafe in Mapleton, Iowa, before her retirement in 1990. She was a member of the Gospel Center in Keokuk.

On Nov. 18, 1960, she married Julius O. Spory at Keokuk. He died Feb. 27, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a son, Douglas J. Mornberg; and her parents.

She is survived by a daughter, Deborah (Mornberg) McCoy, Lakewood, Colo.; two sons, Dennis Spory, Lakewood, and Dale Spory, Garden City; two sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law; two granddaughters; two grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday at Sutter Salem Bible Church, Sutter, Ill., with the Rev. Jack Anderson officiating. Cremation has taken place, with interment in Sutter Salem Bible Church Cemetery.

Wheeler Homes, Cedar Vale, was in charge of arrangements.

W. Russell Wells

W. Russell Wells, 78, of Wichita, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001.

He was born March 25, 1922, at Scott City, the son of W.W. and Ruth (Russell) Wells.

He grew up in Garden City where he graduated from high school in 1941. He attended the New Mexico School of Mines until enlisting in the U.S. Army where he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

After returning from the service, he and his brother-in-law, Max Jones, ran an Army Store in Garden City in 1947. He then worked as a seismologist for Helmerich & Payne and was later owner of Wells Accounting Service and controller for Winger Cattle Company in Johnson City. He also served as a director and investment officer of First National Bank of Liberal.

Mr. Wells had served two four-year terms as a city commissioner in Garden City, two one-year terms as mayor of Garden City, and was director of Security Savings & Loan. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Kiwanis, Elks and American Legion.

He had a lifelong interest in the Boy Scouts of America and served as past president of the Santa Fe Trail Council. He enjoyed fishing and was a member of the local chapter of Bass Masters. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, Helen (Jones) Wells, whom he married on Jan. 10, 1943.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, James, Wichita, Marlin, Garden City, and Chuck, Eau Claire, Wis.; his daughter, Bandi Labidi, Nabeul, Tunisia; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation. A private family ceremony is planned. The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Garden City or the Santa Fe Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America, both in care of Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel, 6555 E. Central St., Wichita, KS 67206-1997.
