Dewey Ivan Nevins

Dewey Ivan Nevins, 70, of Denver, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001.

He was born March 21, 1930, at Plainville, the son of Earl and Dora Nevins. He attended school in Garden City. As a student, his football prowess earned him a place in the Garden City Hall of Fame.

After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for 20 years before retiring with honors. Assigned to the 7544 Civil Engineering Unit, he toured the Far East, gained the rank of technical sergeant and also received an Air Force Commendation Medal for Merit as an O.J.T. Trainer of the 35 fire protection specialists.

After leaving the military, he became an R.T.D. bus driver for 19 years. He enjoyed fishing, watching football, listening to Mahalia Jackson, sharing military stories with his best friends, working on his old truck, taking family trips, and the men's choir at church.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly J. Nevins, whom he married on Dec. 16, 1990; his stepchildren, Andrea D. Kelley, San Antonio, and Leon A. Hall, Denver; three grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Nevins and Ernest Nevins; and his parents.

Funeral was 10 a.m. Jan. 12 at Saint Stephens Missionary Baptist Church, Denver, with the Rev. Randolph West Jr. officiating. Burial was in Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, with full military honors conducted.

Pipkin Mortuary, Denver, was in charge of arrangements.

Eldon Hamlin

SYRACUSE - Funeral for Eldon Hamlin, 79, of rural Syracuse, will be 2:30 p.m. MT Friday at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, Holly, Colo., with the Rev. Mike Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Hatton Cemetery at Bearcreek Township in rural Syracuse.

Mr. Hamlin died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, following a recent illness.

Born May 31, 1921, he was the son of Perry and Emma Hamlin.

He is survived by three daughters, La Vonne Reifsteck, Salina, Lynda Hazen, Holcomb, and Carlen Chance, Millington, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Buck, Syracuse, and Evelyn Kiser, El Dorado Springs, Mo.; and six nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Pearl Hamlin, who died Oct. 7, 1992.

Visitation hours are until 7 tonight and from noon to service time Friday at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral chapel, P.O. Box 275, Holly, CO 81047.

Ruth Turner

ULYSSES - Former Ulysses resident Ruth Turner, 68, of Tyrone, Okla., died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Tyrone.

She was born Feb. 29, 1932, at Ashland, the daughter of John and Marie (King) Blalock. The family later moved to Dodge City, where she grew up.

On Sept. 12, 1949, she married Cleon D. Reist Jr. at Dodge City. In 1954, they moved to Ulysses. In 1960, they moved to Washington state, where he took a position with the Milwaukee Railroad.

After her husband's death on Nov. 5, 1965, she and her children made several moves in Washington state before returning to Ulysses to be closer to her family. She worked for her parents at Blalock's Cafe for several years, and then drove cattle trucks for several years. After her children were grown, she moved to Wichita and worked as a cook at Lake Afton Boys Ranch and Wichita Children's Home. In 1976, she returned to Ulysses to help her father with his landscaping business.

After marrying Kenneth Turner in June 1983, she worked as a dietary department head at the Liberal Good Samaritan Center. She had become interested in ceramics while working at Lake Afton and one of her dreams was to have her own shop so she and her husband opened a ceramics shop in Adams, Okla. They had a lot at Hominy Lake and enjoyed time there together as a family, camping at the lake, fishing, swimming and boating.

Mrs. Turner enjoyed crafts, sewing, crocheting, dancing, attending her grandchildren's activities, decorating her home for holidays, her garden pond, playing bingo and traveling.

Mr. Turner died Feb. 8, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Thomas Eugene Reist; a brother, Bud; and two great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, John Daniel Reist, Deerfield, Karen Marie Shoemaker, Joplin, Mo., and Sharon Larie Howard, Manhattan; a sister, Donna Leonard, Amarillo, Texas; her stepchildren, Evelyn Keever, Bartlesville, Okla., Janett Bright and Kenneth Turner, both of Tyrone, and Loretta Caldwell, Springfield, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; and her friends and adopted children, Jodi and Larry Parker, with whom she chose to spend the last few months of her life.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Freewill Baptist Church, Ulysses, with Seth Howard officiating. Burial will be in Grant County Cemetery, Ulysses.

Memorials are suggested to the church and may be left at the church or mailed to Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, OK 73945.

Sam L. Wise

SATANTA - Sam L. Wise, 21, of Satanta, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Manhattan.

He was born Aug. 8, 1979, at Johnson City. A lifetime area resident, he was a junior at Kansas State University, Manhattan, studying to be a forest ranger. He excelled in high school and FFA, and played sports, especially enjoying football. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, camping and snowboarding.

He is survived by his parents, Michael and Kim Blair, Satanta, and Kevin and Clayetta Wise, Bloomfield, N.M.; a brother, Corey Wise, Oklahoma City; six stepsisters, Brandee, Mikelyn, Jamee, Rylee, Kacee and Tylee; his grandparents, Ramon and Nelda Rexroat, Satanta, and Jim and Pat Wise, St. John. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Marion and Billie Blair.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta, with Jerry Robson officiating.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the FFA of Satanta High School and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value at Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Ruth V. Anderson

FRIEND - Funeral for Ruth V. Anderson, 81, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Prairie View Church of the Brethren, Friend, with the Rev. Martin Gauby officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Anderson died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

She was born Nov. 5, 1919, at Denver, the daughter of Roy Franklin and Mae Estella (Burgin) Jennings. She attended schools in Jewel, Reno and Finney counties, graduating from Garden City High School.

She moved to Pueblo County, Colo., in 1951 and was a school bus driver for Pueblo County District No. 70 from 1953 until 1969. For 12 of those years, she also worked as a secretary at Pinon School.

After returning to Scott County in 1970, she was a secretary for Doombos Cattle for several years. In 1988, she moved to northwest Finney County where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for more than 13 years.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of Prairie View Church of the Brethren, the Kansas Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers and the Hit & Miss Band of Scott City. She enjoyed music, playing the violin and singing.

On Dec. 25, 1938, she married Elmer S. Anderson at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Wilma Palmer, Las Vegas; two sons, Arthur "Butch" Anderson, Canon City, Colo., and Arnold "Pete" Anderson, Florissant, Mo.; two brothers, Otis Jennings, Lakin, and Roy J. Jennings, American Canyon, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Kathryn McGuire; and a brother, Paul Jennings.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Breadbasket Alliance, both in care of the funeral home.

Ruby I. Garmon

HUGOTON - Ruby I. Garmon, 84, of Hugoton, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

She was born Jan. 27, 1916, at Liberal.

A lifetime resident of the area, she worked in the courthouse and city offices in Hugoton. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hugoton, and enjoyed bowling and touring with the senior citizens.

On May 8, 1948, she married Ben V. Garmon at Liberal. He preceded her in death as did her parents and a brother, Ralph Idhe.

She is survived by a stepson, Frank Garmon, Washington; four stepgrandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; two sisters-in-law, Marie Garmon, Salida, Colo., and Ruby Morford, Hugoton; and an aunt.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Pioneer Manor of Hugoton, in care of the funeral home, 314 S. Van Buren St., Hugoton, KS 67951.

Irene Leona Leach

SCOTT CITY - Irene Leona Leach, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

She was born Jan. 31, 1916, at Beeler, the daughter of Earl A. and Phoeb (Stewart) Lomax. A lifetime resident of Scott City, she was a member of First Christian Church, Farm Bureau and the Senior Citizens VIP Center.

On Nov. 15, 1936, she married Ephrain Densmore "Denny" Leach at Scott City. He died in 1970 at Scott City. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Anita Powers; three brothers, Oliver Lomax, Leo Lomax and Willard Lomax; and a grandson.

She is survived by a daughter, Inez Driskell, Taunton, Mass.; a son, Michael Leach, Scott City; three brothers, Harvey Lomax, Fresno, Calif., Clark Lomax, LaFayette, Calif., and Henry Lomax, Brea, Calif.; four grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service is planned for later. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Senior Citizens VIP Center, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.
