Lester Roy Green

LAKIN - Lester Roy Green, 86, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born Feb. 7, 1914, at Abbeyville, the son of Roy Lester and Nana Ruan (McGonigle) Green. He attended schools in Nickerson and graduated from Nickerson High School. He then helped on the family farm in Reno County, drove a truck and worked at the Hutchinson Co-op.

In 1942, he moved to Kearny County where he farmed, worked on the oil rigs and had a water well drilling business. In 1953, he went to work as a heavy equipment operator for Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Co. and retired in 1976 as a pipeline inspector.

Mr. Green was a member of First Christian Church of Lakin. His special interest was his yard work.

On Nov. 27, 1938, he married Olive Helen Lachenmaier at Miltonvale. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Letcher Waechter, Ulysses, and Jeri Lynn Taylor, Lakin; a brother, Harold Green, Weslaco, Texas; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Glenda Sue Green; and a brother, Clifford Green.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the church or High Plains Retirement Village, both in care of the funeral home.

Howard Wilson Zook

Funeral for Howard Wilson Zook, 87, of Rozel, was to be 10:30 this morning at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with the Rev. Rob Schmutz officiating. Burial was to be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Zook.

Mr. Zook died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus, Larned.

He was born Jan. 10, 1914, in Pawnee County, the son of Charles and Viola (Grubb) Zook.

A lifetime resident of Pawnee County, he was a retired farmer. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Lions Club, and was the first organizer of the 4-H Rozel Hustler, all at Rozel.

On June 8, 1938, he married Norma Eileen Cook at Larned. She survives. He is also survived by four daughters, Sharron Brown, Great Bend, Carmen Franz, Warrensburg, Mo., Dolretta Hagerty, Larned, and Zella Sanner, Spring Valley, Calif.; three sons, Howard Michael Zook, Garden City, John B. Zook, Tierra Blanco, Old Mexico, and Mark Zook, Longmont, Colo.; three brothers, Charles A. Zook, Lakewood, Calif., Willard Zook, Azle, Texas, and Ronald Zook, Turner, Ore.; a sister, Hazel Query, Panorama, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Jennings; and a brother, Estel.

Memorials are suggested to Burdett Emergency Medical Service or the church, both in care of the mortuary, P.O. Box 477, Larned, KS 67550.

John Wesley Grusing

LAKIN - Funeral for John Wesley Grusing, 77, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Lydia United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Warren Hett officiating. Burial will be in Lydia Cemetery.

Mr. Grusing died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born May 10, 1923, in northern Kearny County, the son of John and Anna (DeVries) Grusing. He attended Eureka Rural School in Kearny County and graduated from Lakin Rural High School in 1940.

A lifelong farmer and stockman in northern Kearny County, he was very involved with different species of poultry and gave many tours of his farm to school children, showing the various kinds of birds and animals. He also had a special interest in horticulture, growing different kinds of plants in his garden and yard.

Mr. Grusing was a member of the United Methodist Church of Lydia, belonged to the Southwest Kansas Feather Fanciers, was a founder and leader of Highlanders 4-H Club and a former member of the Kearny County Fair Board.

On Aug. 21, 1946, he married Mabel Pennington at Liberal. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Steve Grusing, Syracuse, and Damon Grusing, Lakin; two daughters, Linda Beth Doubrava, Durant, Okla., and Margaret Jennings, Lakin; two brothers, Bill Grusing, Denver, and Henry Grusing, Hutchinson; four sisters, Helen Kysar and Edith Litton, both of Lakin, Alice Geyer, WaKeeney, and Clara Warrington, Manzanola, Colo.; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Dave Grusing, Herman Grusing, Ed Grusing and Ben Grusing; and two sisters, Grace Grusing and Martha Brown.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, the National Parkinson Foundation or Kearny County Hospital, all in care of the funeral home.

Eddie Blount Jr.

Graveside service for Eddie Blount Jr., 78, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with Chaplain Shannon Borchert officiating.

Mr. Blount died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born July 20, 1922, at Carthage, Texas, the son of Eddie Sr. and Estella (Simmon) Blount. A longtime Garden City resident, he was a retired brick layer.

He is survived by two sons, Eddie Blount III and Wayne Blount, both of Florida; two daughters, Joyce Blount and Cathy Blount, both of Houston; and two sisters, Katherine Johnson and Betty Ann Griffin, both of Garrison, Texas.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Agnes Cornelson

Agnes Cornelson, 96, of Inman, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Inman.

She was born May 22, 1904, at Inman, the daughter of William and Susanna (Kornelson) Schlichting.

A homemaker, she had lived at Fowler until moving to Dodge City in 1988. She moved to Inman in 1995. She attended Victory Life Fellowship Church of Dodge City and had been active in the H.D.U. at Fowler.

On Jan. 10, 1925, she married Jacob K. Cornelson at Dodge City. He died Sept. 17, 1971. She was also preceded in death by a son, William.

Survivors include a son, Raymond Cornelson, Garden City; two daughters, Edna Smith, Buhler, and Ruth Young, Coden, Ala.; a brother, John Schlichting, Dodge City; a sister, Lena Eaves, Coden; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary Chapel, Meade, with the Rev. Rusty Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Meade.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Sherlyn Sue (Jones) Moore

Funeral for Sherlyn Sue (Jones) Moore, 50, of Konawa, Okla., was 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Vamoosa (Okla.) Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Green officiating and the Rev. LeRoy Sommers assisting.

Mrs. Moore, a horse trainer, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Norman, Okla.

She was born May 19, 1950, at Garden City, the daughter of Verneta M. and Thomas E. Jones.

On Jan. 19, 1969, she married Charles Moore at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Kelly Gill, Sallisaw, Okla.; a son, Bud Moore, Konawa; her parents, Garden City; two sisters, Barbara Fief and Debby Wright, both of Garden City; a granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to the grandchildren's education fund in memory of Sherlyn Moore, in care of Pontotoc (Okla.) County Bank.

Kenneth Eugene Dickerson

Kenneth Eugene Dickerson, 44, of Satanta died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, in rural Grant County.

Mr. Dickerson was born on Feb. 21, 1956, in Garden City to Dolores L. (Taton) Szeluka.

Mr. Dickerson was a lifelong resident of southwest Kansas. He loved music, was an avid reader and a caretaker of the family farm.

Survivors include his mother; four brothers, Richard LeBrun of Beaverton, Ore., George Dickerson of Holcomb, John Dickerson of Glendive, Mont., and Michael Szeluka of Lakin; two sisters, Tawanna Groth and Shelly Morgan of Lakin; and many nieces and nephews.

A brother and sister died earlier.

A service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant Prairie Church of God in Satanta with the Rev. Fred Hauck officiating.

Visitation will be today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.

Memorials may be sent to the Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo in care of the Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
