Nathan M. Billings

FRIEND - Nathan M. Billings, 83, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita.

He was born May 13, 1917, in Dewey County, Okla., the son of Henry Nathan and Delinda Viva (Passwater) Billings.

A Scott City resident since 1940, moving from Dewey County, he was an oil field pumper for 34 years having worked in Finney County and at the Shallow Water Refining Co. in Scott County.

Mr. Billings was a member of Prairie View Church of the Brethren at Friend and the International Union of Operator Engineers Local No. 646, a former member of the Moose Lodge at Garden City, and a life member of the Parent Teacher Association at Friend School. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and reading.

On Jan. 26, 1942, he married Cecile Marie Gatlin at Leoti. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Delinda V. Dunagan and Patricia Ann Beaton, both of Scott City; two sons, Larry G. Billings, Holcomb, and Kenneth L. Billings, Loveland, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Billings, Seiling, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and five brothers.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Revs. Martin Gauby and Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Church Cemetery, Friend.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Prairie View Church of the Brethren, Scott County VIP Center or Kansas Heart Hospital, all in care of the funeral home.

Addie A. Schreibvogel

SATANTA - Vigil service for Addie A. Schreibvogel, 72, will be 6:30 p.m. Friday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Satanta. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Revs. James E. Baker and Louis Trung Hoang officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.

Mr. Schreibvogel died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at CMHIP Hospital in Pueblo, Colo.

He was born Dec. 20, 1928, in Finney County, the son of Anton and Margaret (Urban) Schreibvogel.

On Aug. 29, 1950, he married Doris J. Jacobs at Garden City. They moved from Garden City to Satanta on Jan. 2, 1965.

Mr. Schreibvogel worked for Harding Glass in Garden City for 10 years. After moving to Satanta, he worked for Jim Miller at Miller Farms and Miller Feedyard. He then farmed for five years on his own and worked for Satanta District Hospital for 8 1/2 years before retiring. He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, and enjoyed his family activities, fishing and doing yard work.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Ray A. Schreibvogel, Liberal; a daughter, Kim Marie Holley, Satanta; four brothers, Tony Schreibvogel and Richard Schreibvogel, both of Garden City, Fritz Schreibvogel, Lakin, and Francis Schreibvogel, Ardmore, Okla.; a sister, Kay Cates, Bullhead, Ariz.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wendlin Schreibvogel, Herman Schreibvogel and Leonard Schreibvogel; and three sisters, Fina Meier, Bina Meier and Ann Herrman.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the Educational Fund for James Schreibvogel, Mr. Schreibvogel's grandson, and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Ruby L. McGuire

Funeral for Ruby L. McGuire, 83, of Oakley, will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Wesleyan Church, Oakley, with the Revs. Duane Lauber and Dwight Kahre officiating. Burial will be in Pyramid View Cemetery in Gove County.

Mrs. McGuire died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Logan County Hospital in Oakley.

Born Oct. 26, 1917, in Gove County, she was the daughter of Franklin James and Bessie Mae (Snyder) Smith. She attended Fort Hays College where she acquired her lifetime teaching certificate.

She had lived in Lane and Logan counties and in the communities of Rexford, Deerfield and Phillipsburg before moving to Oakley in 1953. In 1961, she returned to Phillipsburg and resided there until January 2001.

A homemaker and teacher, she had taught at various country schools including two years at Elkader School and one year at Good Luck School, both in Logan County; one year at Sunrise School in Finney County; and one year at Iowa Union School in Phillips County.

Mrs. McGuire was a former member of the Nazarene Church of Kirwin and Church of the Nazarene at Oakley. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, collecting, animals and outdoor life.

On May 4, 1940, she married Leland W. McGuire at Colby. He survives. She is also survived by three sons, Larry McGuire, Monument, Jim McGuire, Oakley, and Eddy McGuire, Phillipsburg; a daughter, Judy Hopson, Quinter; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Franklin James Smith Jr.; and two sisters, Violet Irene Smith and Lula Meyers.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, Oakley. Memorials are suggested to the KSU Center for Basic Cancer Research or Logan County Hospital, both in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 221, Oakley, KS 67748.

Mary M. "Mae" Rooney

Vigil service for Mary M. "Mae" Rooney, 94, will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating.

Miss Rooney died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born Oct. 13, 1906, at Haddam, the daughter of William T. and Otilia (Pelesky) Rooney. She attended Haddam Grade School, graduated from Haddam High School in 1923, and attended Marymount College in Salina. She then returned home for two years before going to Kansas State University where she earned a bachelor's degree in nutrition in 1930.

In 1932, she served a dietetic internship in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1933, she became the dietitian for the Panama Hospital in Panama City. She returned to the United States in 1937 and was the dietitian at a hospital in Neptune, N.J., before going to the University of Chicago where she earned her master's degree in nutrition.

In 1940, she began the nutrition program for the Red Cross in Chicago. She left that to become the teaching dietitian at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. In 1944, she returned to Chicago to teach science at Town School, a private school for girls.

She went to Oakland, Calif., in 1948 to teach science at the College of Holy Names. In 1953, she went back to Haddam to take care of her mother. She moved to Garden City in 1969 to be closer to her nephew and niece, Bill and Anne Rooney.

While in Garden City, Miss Rooney volunteered at St. Dominic School, worked with the R.E.A.C.H. Program at St. Dominic and St. Mary, ran the bingo games at Garden Valley Retirement Village and played bridge in her spare time. She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church of Garden City and the Newman Study Club.

In addition to Bill and Anne Rooney of Garden City, she is survived by several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Dominic School or Garden City Community College, both in care of the funeral home.

Edna J. Reinert

Edna J. Reinert, 89, of rural Holly, Colo., died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Prowers Medical Center in Lamar, Colo., following a recent illness.

She was born April 20, 1911, at North Bend, Neb., the daughter of Elbern and Josephine Coons.

Survivors include three children, James Reinert, of Holly, Wanda Giskie and Karen Grim, both of Garden City; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Hogg, Roseburg, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin Reinert, who died Aug. 23, 1972; a grandson; and a brother, Elbern Coons, in September 1999.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, Holly, with the Rev. Ralph Plummer officiating. Burial will be in Holly Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Towner Scholarship Fund and may be sent directly or in care of the funeral chapel, 119 S. Main St., Holly, CO 81047.

Benny Nebarez

LAKIN - Vigil service and rosary for Benny Nebarez, 53, will be 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lakin. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms as celebrant. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Mr. Nebarez died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born March 21, 1947, at Poteet, Texas, the son of Arturo and Andrea (Pompa) Nebarez. He grew up in Texas and attended schools in Campbellton, Texas.

A Lakin resident since the late 1960s, he was a self-employed truck driver and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. He enjoyed reading, collecting antiques, trucks, spending time with his family, watching old movies and reminiscing about the past.

On May 3, 1975, he married Lala Cantu at Lakin. She survives. He is also survived by a son, B.J. Nebarez, of the home; a daughter, Melissa Rosales, Lakin; a sister, Rosie Perez, Lakin; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials to the Benny Nebarez Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

Harold B. Vedder

Harold B. Vedder, 80, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph's Campus, Wichita.

He was born Sept. 25, 1920, at Dodge City, the son of Herbert Snyder and Minnie (Carr) Vedder.

Mr. Vedder was the owner and operator of Vedder Painting Inc. of Garden City until moving to Andover in 1997. He was a member of the Christian faith and belonged to John J. Haskell VFW Post No. 2279 and Harry H. Renick American Legion Post No. 9, both at Garden City, and served with the U.S. Army 82nd and 101st airborne divisions' "Screamin' Eagles" as a paratrooper during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of Wichita and formerly of Garden City; three sons, Garry Vedder, Lewisville, Texas, Clayton Vedder and Galen Vedder, both of Hutchinson; three daughters, Karen Smith, Janice Riddle and Marsha Sessions, all of Hutchinson; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two grandsons.

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating.

There will be no visitation. The family suggests memorials to the Augusta Regional Medical Center Long Term Care Unit, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.
