Courtney Lee Smith

ULYSSES - Former Ulysses resident Courtney Lee Smith, 64, of Macksville, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born May 26, 1936, at Trousdale, the son of Alves B. and Eva Smith. He graduated from Trousdale High School in 1954.

A Macksville resident for eight years, moving from Ulysses, Mr. Smith was a route fieldman for Panhandle Eastern Oil Pipeline Co. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Masonic Lodge in North Dakota.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy J. Smith, whom he married on Aug. 26, 1957, at Mayville, N.D.; two daughters, Kelly Schnable, Hugoton, and Kimberly Nave, Lakin; a sister, Charlotte Pickering, Kinsley; five brothers, John Smith, Neodesha, Daniel Smith, Mulvane, James Smith, Woodward, Okla., Larry Hinderliter, Great Bend, and Thomas Hinderliter, Lyons; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Patsy Simms.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Macksville Christian Church, with the Rev. Carey Haner officiating. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Minnis Chapel, Macksville.

Elene I. Henderson

LAKIN - Elene I. Henderson, 84, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at her home in Lakin.

She was born Nov. 26, 1916, in northern Kearny County, the daughter of G.C. and Sarah "Sadie" (Oliver) Whitaker. She graduated from Lakin Rural High School with the class of 1936 and received the Bronc Award for that year.

A lifetime resident of Kearny County, she moved into Lakin after World War II. She was a homemaker and worked for many years coordinating and preparing funeral dinners for the families of the First Presbyterian Church and was also a frequent volunteer in the Budget Shop.

Mrs. Henderson was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lakin and a charter member of the Birthday Club. Her special interests were her family activities and sports, birds and her garden.

On April 24, 1938, she married John E. Henderson at Dodge City. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Gerald Henderson, of Marion, and Don Henderson, Denver; a daughter, Rhonda Purcell, Hutchinson; four sisters, Esther Kuhlman, Great Bend, Edith Spencer, Lakin, Margaret Wilken, Garden City, and Anita Beth Kash, Meridian, Idaho; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Howard Whitaker, Oliver Whitaker and Wayne Whitaker.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Juanita Wiseman officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Angelita Herrera

Vigil service for Angelita Herrera, 34, of 265 Karen St., will be 8 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Carlos Garcia Pena, S.J., officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Herrera died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

She was born Sept. 25, 1966, at Durango, Mexico, the daughter of David Gutierrez Diaz and Arselia Garcia Montenegro.

On Feb. 10, 1984, she married Juan Herrera at Durango. They moved from California to Garden City that year. A homemaker, she enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. She attended St. Mary Catholic Church.

Her husband died Oct. 28, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents.

Survivors include two sons, Miguel and Saul Herrera, both of the home; her parents, Durango; five brothers, Cruz Gutierrez, Jose Gutierrez, Jesus Gutierrez, Jamie Gutierrez and Geraldo Gutierrez, all of Los Angeles; five sisters, Elva Gutierrez and Elsa Gutierrez, both of Garden City, Irene Gutierrez, Rockford, Ill., Sylvia Gutierrez, Aurora, Colo., and Lorena Gutierrez, Durango; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Angelita Herrera Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Dorothy Ellen Stout

TRIBUNE - Funeral for Dorothy Ellen Stout, 72, will be 2 p.m. MST Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Dale Clare officiating. Private family burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.

Mrs. Stout died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.

She was born Aug. 31, 1928, at Dodge City, the daughter of Charles and Ellen Eva (Brown) Lampe.

On Feb. 13, 1947, she married Merland J. Stout at Cimarron. He died Aug. 28, 1990.

A Tribune resident for 2 1/2 years, she had formerly lived in Manter and Dodge City. She had worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., owned and operated Dodge City Security with her husband, and worked in the register of deeds office in Dodge City.

Mrs. Stout most recently had worked at Gooch's Foods and was a Green Thumb representative for the Greeley County Museum where she wrote a weekly article for the Greeley County Republican. She was a lifetime member of VFW Auxiliary Post 1714 of Dodge City.

She is survived by a daughter, Debbie Fink, Tribune; three grandchildren; and two nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her foster mother, Cora Baker; a brother, Harley Lampe; two sisters, Lucille Stout and Louise Ebersole; three foster sisters, Alice Harris, Vera Paxton and Vivian Schonlou; and a granddaughter.

Visitation hours are from 9 to 11:30 a.m. MST Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Tribune. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Box 715, Johnson City, KS 67855.

Helen Battles

SCOTT CITY - Helen Battles, 85, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa, Iowa.

She was born March 9, 1915, at Andrew, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Clara (Walker) Gisel. She graduated from Andrew Community High School and attended nursing school in Davenport, Iowa.

On Dec. 14, 1937, she married Lynn F. Battles Sr. at Davenport. They farmed in the Maquoketa area for 50 years and also managed a Montgomery Ward catalog store there for several years.

Mrs. Battles was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Maquoketa, and belonged to the Ladies of the Roundtable. She served as head of the Jackson County Republican Women's Party for many years. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting, needlepoint, playing euchre and cards, especially with the Ladies of the Roundtable, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include a son, Gary Battles, Scott City; two brothers, Howard Gisel, Maquoketa, and Max Gisel, of Andrew; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died Jan. 24, 1979; her parents; a son, Lynn F. Battles Jr.; a grandson; and three brothers.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Carson & Son Funeral Home, Maquoketa, with the Rev. Clair Odell officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Maquoketa.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Maquoketa. Memorials are suggested to the Scott City Chapter of the Salvation Army, in care of Boomhower Funeral Home, Box 891, Dighton, KS 67839.

Marian Ball Meyer

Marian Ball Meyer, 75, of Tucson, Ariz., and formerly of Garden City, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, in Houston.

Mrs. Meyer was a past president and member of Episcopalian Church Women in Tucson. She also donated her time to The West and St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her children, Walter R. III, Lea-Anne Klusman and Russell L., all of Houston; four grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Montgomery, Phoenix; and a brother, Robert Ball, Austin, Texas.

A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Feb. 16 at St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson, AZ 85718-6504 or to The West, 5615 River Road, Tucson, AZ 85750.

Norma Rowe Gunn

Norma Rowe Gunn, 96, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in Oklahoma City.

She was born May 25, 1904, at Garden City. She was educated in Garden City and taught school here and in Pratt.

In 1934, she and her husband, Harold, moved to Oklahoma City. After World War II, they lived for three years in Omaha, Neb., returning to Oklahoma City in 1948.

Mrs. Gunn was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Oklahoma City.

She is survived by two nieces, Candace Downer, Garden City, and Shelley Zerr, Lyndon; and a nephew, Tom Rowe, Jupiter, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1980; her parents; and a brother, M.A. "Sonny" Rowe.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Raymond Raley officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
