Suzanne G. Purnell

Suzanne G. Purnell, 78, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Feb. 11, 1922, at Dewey, Okla., the daughter of Thurman and Zola (Searle) Gay.

A Garden City resident since July 1957, moving from Pratt, she had been the manager and buyer for Purnells Fashions and Fabrics for many years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

On Feb. 13, 1944, she married George W. Purnell at Wichita. He survives. She is also survived by a brother, Thurman Gay of O'Neill, Neb.

Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Dave Sweley officiating. Private burial will take place later.

There will be visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the church or the Finney County Historical Society, both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

Irene Gossman

Irene Gossman, 73, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born May 20, 1927, in Pawnee County, the daughter of Homer J. and Lenora (Whitson) Whithorn.

A lifetime Garden City resident, she worked on the family farm and was the bookkeeper for her son's trucking firm. She was a member of the Baptist faith, a former Boy Scout leader and 4-H leader, and belonged to the Senior Center of Finney County.

On April 19, 1944, she married Charles J. Gossman at Scott City. He died July 14, 1974. In May 1978, she married Jack Brooker at Albuquerque, N.M. He died in August 1980. She was also preceded in death by a grandson; and two sons, Larry Wayne Gossman and Garry Lee Gossman.

She is survived by two sons, Steve Gossman, Scott City, and Gerald Gossman, Garden City; a brother, John Whithorn, Parsons; two sisters, Helen Jelley and Doris Whithorn, both of Neosho, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. John Williams officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday and 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Irene Gossman Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Bonnie Jean Howard

HUGOTON - Graveside service for Burlington resident Bonnie Jean Howard, 75, formerly of Kismet, Liberal and Neosho Rapids, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kismet Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Smitherman officiating.

Mrs. Howard died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Newman Memorial County Hospital in Emporia.

She was born Feb. 13, 1925, at Paden, Okla., the daughter of Henry Madison and Cora (Peters) Mynhier.

Mrs. Howard owned and operated Bonnie's Cafe at Kismet and was dietary manager at Flint Hills Nursing Home, Emporia, until retiring in 1989. She also worked in a defense plant in Kansas City building airplanes during World War II. She had been a resident of Burlington Life Care for seven years.

On Dec. 2, 1946, she married Jesse Edward Howard at Shawnee, Okla. He died Sept. 17, 1970. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and an infant brother.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald E. Howard, Reading, Jesse R. Howard, Neosho Rapids, and James C. Howard, Hugoton; a daughter, Donna J. Presley, Burlington; two sisters, Marie Leonard, Eufala, Okla., and Nova West, Sand Springs, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Faith Bible Church, Kismet. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, in care of Paul's Funeral Home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Ruhe Rudd Pringle

TRIBUNE - Memorial service for Ruhe Rudd Pringle, 78, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., will be 7:30 tonight at Church of the Nazarene, Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. William L. Burke officiating. Burial will take place later in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Mrs. Pringle died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Chateau Girardeau Health Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Jan. 15, 1923, at Belpre, the daughter of Herbert E. and Mayrella (Windhorst) Rudd. She attended Bryan University in Dayton, Tenn., and graduated from Ottawa University in Ottawa in 1945 with a bachelor's degree in education.

Mrs. Pringle taught school for more than 29 years, including five years at Garden City. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Tribune.

On Dec. 7, 1943, she married Douglas R. Pringle at Tribune. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Dr. Scot G. Pringle, Cape Girardeau, and Bryce R. Pringle, Shenandoah, Iowa; a daughter, Janet M. Reeder, Lawrence; two sisters, Shirley Jane Dixon, Tribune, and Patricia Jackson Carr, Kerrville, Texas; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son; and a grandson.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Robert E. Pringle Memorial Scholarship at the University of Kansas, in care of Ford & Sons Funeral Home, 1001 N. Mt. Auburn Road, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701.

Harry H. Caldwell Jr.

ULYSSES - Harry H. Caldwell Jr., 90, of Ulysses, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson City where he had been a resident since May 1997.

He was born April 19, 1910, in Ford County, the son of Harry H. and Tessey (Halstead) Caldwell Sr. When he was 5, the family moved from Ford County to Grant County by covered wagon.

A farmer and rancher, Mr. Caldwell was a member of Shelton Memorial Christian Church at Ulysses, the Southwest Kansas Irrigation Association and the Ulysses Co-op.

On Feb. 7, 1942, he married Betty L. Livesay at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Jerry K. Caldwell and Randall L. Caldwell, both of Ulysses; two daughters, Wanda J. Holland, Oktaha, Okla., and Janet E. Rolick, Anaheim, Calif.; a brother, Hubert Caldwell, Johnson City; a sister, Ellen Barber, Ulysses; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson; a brother, Mitchell Caldwell; two infant brothers; and two sisters, Agnes Cox and Marie Oliver.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial will be in Shockey Cemetery, Ulysses.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the Diabetes Association or the Stanton Long Term Care Unit, both in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Roger Norman Pister Sr.

ULYSSES - Roger Norman Pister Sr., 50, of Ulysses, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born Aug. 31, 1950, at Harvey, N.D., the son of Theodore and Helen (Hirchert) Pister.

A Ulysses resident since 1981, he worked for Lathem Water Service for 16 years and enjoyed working on and restoring old cars. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

On March 16, 1972, he married Marjorie Otto at Fessenden, N.D. She survives. He is also survived by his mother, of Harvey; two sons, Rodger Norman Pister Jr. and Darrick Pister, both of Ulysses; two daughters, Elizabeth Andazola, Syracuse, and Angela Orosco, Ulysses; two brothers, Gary Pister, Ulysses, and Ron Pister, St. Joseph, Mo.; three sisters, Connie Ensz, Bismarck, N.D., Ruth Edwards, Ulysses, and JoAnn Martwick, Drake, N.D.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, with the Rev. Richard Stafford officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Church of the Nazarene at Ulysses, all in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Edward T. Barber

Johnson CITY - Edward T. Barber, 81, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

He was born June 7, 1919, in Reno County, the son of Orville T. and Wilma (King) Barber.

A Stanton County resident since 1932, he was a farmer and attended Bethel Nazarene Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On Oct. 27, 1940, he married Ona C. Nelson. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Tom Barber, Wichita; a daughter, K. Ellen Kersey, Johnson City; three brothers, Kenneth Barber, Johnson City, Fay Barber, Caldwell, Idaho, and Gail Barber, Enid, Okla.; a sister, Willa Cott, Garden City; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Bethel Nazarene Church, Big Bow, with the Rev. Tom Boese officiating. Burial will follow in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. today and Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials are suggested to the Bethel Nazarene Church Building Fund, in care of the funeral home, Box 715, Johnson City, KS 67855.
