Eldean "Dean" Neese

Vigil service for Eldean "Dean" Neese, 57, will be 7 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Neese died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Dec. 17, 1943, at Liberal, the son of H.O. and Mae (Fuller) Neese. He grew up in Liberal and attended schools there.

In 1962, he moved to Garden City where he was owner and operator of Neese Painting. He belonged to St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Eagles Lodge. His special interests were golfing, fishing and traveling.

On Jan. 7, 1962, he married Edwina Saiz at Liberal. She survives. He is also survived by a brother, Gerald Neese, Liberal; and four sisters, Margaret Hinz, Liberal, Charlene Miller, Hardesty, Okla., Nancy Pittman, Turpin, Okla., and Doris Ann Gordon, Canute, Okla. He was the godfather of Mandy and Josh Herrell. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ricky Dean; a brother; and five sisters.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the St. Mary Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Emmett Henry "Hank" Rinker

SYRACUSE - Memorial graveside service for Emmett Henry "Hank" Rinker, 73, will be 11 a.m. MST Thursday in Syracuse Cemetery, with the Rev. Eddie Palmer officiating.

Mr. Rinker died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 5, 1927, on a farm in Boone County, Iowa, the son of Emmett Harvey and Ethel Christine (Anderson) Rinker. He graduated from Beaver (Iowa) High School.

A retired farm worker and handyman, he lived in several states prior to moving to Syracuse 35 years ago. He belonged to the VFW and the Non-Commission Officers Association and had served in the U.S. Army in Italy, receiving the American Theatre Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon.

Mr. Rinker had been married and had several daughters who survive. He is also survived by two sisters, Betty Van Pelt, San Diego, and Barbara Hagge, Palmetto, Fla.; a brother, Myron Rinker, Rippey, Iowa; and other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the VFW or the Syracuse Boy Scout Troops, both in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home & Monuments, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Margaret Mae Brown

Margaret Mae Brown, 81, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at her home in Garden City.

She was born June 3, 1919, at Great Bend, the daughter of William Wesley and Orpha (Stanley) Leatherbury. When she was young, the family moved from Great Bend to Garden City where she graduated from Garden City High School.

On Sept. 23, 1939, she married W.D. "Bill" Brown at Garden City. They farmed northeast of Garden City. After his death on May 30, 1960, she moved back to town and went to work as a cook at Abe Hubert Junior High School until retiring in 1985.

Mrs. Brown was a member of First Christian Church, Eagles Lodge No. 3124, VFW Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors and the Senior Center of Finney County. She enjoyed her volunteer activities such as the Election Board and the Activities Department at Pershing Manor. Her special interests were cooking and reading.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Brown, Garden City, and Virl Brown, Granby, Colo.; three daughters, Renee Walker, Prairie Village, Caroline Duvall, Garden City, and Nancy Brown, Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Orpha Freeman, Hutchinson; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Ernie Leatherbury, Jim Leatherbury, David Leatherbury, Cecil Leatherbury and Doyle Leatherbury; and three sisters, Tenie Mendenhall, Reetia Brown and Pauline Knight.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Edwin Leander Talbert

Edwin Leander Talbert, 78, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Feb. 25, 1923, at Alexander, the son of Bessteena and Ina (Jones) Talbert. He attended schools at Larned, Dodge City and Boise City, Okla.

Mr. Talbert served with Headquarters Company 145th Regiment, 37th Infantry Division in the Soloman Islands and the Philippine Islands in the South Pacific during World War II, serving from 1942 through 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor on Luzon Island in the Philippines.

A Garden City resident for 50 years, he was employed by the Santa Fe Railway Co. for 42 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Legion Post No. 9, and enjoyed fishing, gardening, and spending time with friends and family.

In 1948, he married Marilyn Davidson at Cimarron. On May 29, 1958, he married Shirley Hankins at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Sandra Russell, Garden City; a sister, Mary Ryersee, Great Bend; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Michelle Annette Aronchick; and two sisters, Berniece Harnar and Helen Sheldon Eckles.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Freddie L. Hartley Sr.

Vigil service and rosary for Freddie L. Hartley Sr., 67, of Fort Dodge, will be 7:30 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Hartley died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Colmery O'Neil Veterans Administration Medical Center in Topeka.

He was born March 27, 1933, at Johnson City, the son of Paul and Myrtle Effie (Ford) Hartley. He attended schools in Johnson City before moving to Garden City during his high school years. He graduated from Garden City High School.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, he lived in various places before returning to Garden City in the spring of 2000. He moved to Fort Dodge in December 2000.

A self-employed painter, Mr. Hartley enjoyed collecting stamps and coins. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, both at Garden City.

He is survived by five sons, Freddie L. Hartley Jr., Lonnie L. Hartley and Darrel L. Hartley, all of Garden City, Teddie L. Hartley, Maxwell, Ind., and Timmie L. Hartley, Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Vickie L. Hartley, Garden City; a brother, Ernest L. Hartley, Ravenna, Neb.; a sister, Peggy Winter, Garden City; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Pauline Blythe; and two grandsons.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Freddie L. Hartley Sr. Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Alice Mary Stegman

HOLCOMB - Vigil service for Alice Mary Stegman, 78, will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by Daughters of Isabella rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Stegman died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at her home in Holcomb.

She was born Nov. 2, 1922, at Kinsley, the daughter of Phillip and Eva (Adams) Frick. She grew up in Edwards County in the Kinsley area, and attended schools and graduated from high school at Kinsley.

On Oct. 14, 1943, she married Julius Stegman at Offerle. They lived on a farm near Offerle until moving to Holcomb in 1958. He died Aug. 5, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Jack Frick.

Mrs. Stegman was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, both at Garden City. A homemaker, she enjoyed her grandchildren, reading, crossword puzzles and watching sports.

She is survived by four sons, Allen Stegman, Mike Stegman and Scott Stegman, all of Holcomb, and Greg Stegman, Delray Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Diane Florio, Branchville, N.J.; two brothers, Elmer Frick and Lester Frick, both of Kinsley; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary Catholic Church or the Alice Stegman Scholarship Fund for the Holcomb Booster Club, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Katashi "Kat" Akagi

Katashi "Kat" Akagi, 80, of Bullhead City, Ariz., died there on Sunday, March 18, 2001.

He was born Jan. 26, 1921, at Swink, Colo., the son of Ihachi and Mika Akagi. He grew up and attended school in Crowley, Colo.

He began his career in farming, first in Colorado, then in Grant County in southwest Kansas, spending more than five decades farming before his retirement.

After moving to Bullhead City in 1986, he continued with his lifelong passion of making new friends, and entertaining old friends and relatives with his stories, humor and songs.

He is survived by his wife, Racheal; a daughter, Ann Akagi-Hacker, Chandler, Ariz.; a son, Wayne Akagi, Ulysses; two brothers, Genzo Akagi, Ulysses, and Kaku Akagi, Caldwell, Idaho; two sisters, Asano Quarue, Crowley, and Sue Nagamoto, Richland, Wash.; a grandson; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Shig Akagi; and a sister, Ayu Akagi Tanaka.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Baptist Church, Crowley, with the Rev. Jerry Ashida officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery, Ordway, Colo.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the donor's choice or to Western Arizona Home Health and Hospice, 1514 Goldrush Road Suite 8, Bullhead City, AZ 86442.
