Vincent D. Simmons

Parish vigil for Vincent D. Simmons, 84, of Larned, was 7 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned. Funeral Mass was 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Dennis Reed officiating. Burial followed in Larned Cemetery.

Mr. Simmons died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at his home in Larned.

He was born April 7, 1916, at Larned, the son of Dennis and Laura (Gust) Simmons.

A lifetime resident of Larned, he was a retired auto parts salesman. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

On Jan. 18, 1938, he married Grace Bird at Larned. She survives. He is also survived by five sons, Vincent H., Garden City, Jerome, Olathe, Joseph and Kevin, both of Larned, and Patrick, of Howard; three daughters, Lavada Rowe, Scranton, Veronica Holloman, Topeka, and Monica Schneweis, Dodge City; 25 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael; two brothers, George and Clyde; and four sisters, Blanche Dawson, Mable Keenan, Leola Christian and Marie Johnson-Hughes.

Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart School Endowment Fund, in care of Morell Funeral Home, P.O. Box 124, Larned, KS 67550-0124.

Orville Lee Potter

MONTEZUMA - Orville Lee Potter, 80, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at his home in Montezuma.

He was born Sept. 5, 1920, in Gray County, the son of Nelson and Mary Grace (Kitch) Potter.

Mr. Potter was a laborer in the construction business. He was a member of Assembly of God Church and a former member of the VFW and American Legion, all at Pratt, and attended the United Methodist Church at Montezuma. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

On July 23, 1949, he married Esther Ethel Keller at Perryton, Texas. They moved from Pratt to Montezuma in 1972.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Linda Kay Lampe, Edison, Neb.; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wilbur Potter and Harold Potter; and a sister, Wilma Schwiekhard.

Military graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma, with the Rev. Gene Eshleman officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Fort Riley Military Funeral Detail.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Prairie at Dodge City, in care of Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Mattie Cramer

Mattie Cramer, 88, of Springfield, Colo., died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.

She was born Nov. 7, 1912, at Bartlesville, Okla., the daughter of Bertie and Carrie (Riddle) Harbert. Early in life, she moved to Colorado with her family. She attended Liberty School and Springfield High School.

On March 30, 1932, she married Wayne B. Cramer in Baca County, Colo. They worked on the family farm and ranch. She enjoyed watching things grow, cooking for her family, and collecting rocks in her later years.

Mrs. Cramer taught at two rural schools in Baca County during the 1940s. She worked for several years as a substitute teacher at Campo School.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Leta Mansfield, Arcadia, Fla.; two sons, Dale Cramer, Syracuse, and Lynn Cramer, Pritchett, Colo.; a brother, Henry Harbert, California; two sisters, Opal Dashner and Irene Ison, both of Lamar, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Oral and Claude; three sisters, Eva Venter, Bertha Ray and Alice Harbert; and a son, Ivan Cramer.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. MST Thursday at Rich Funeral Chapel, Springfield. Burial will be in Springfield Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. MST today, Tuesday and Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Joe Dougherty

ELKHART - Funeral for Joe Dougherty, 56, of Elkhart, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Church of God, Elkhart, with the Rev. Shan Hanes officiating. Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery.

Mr. Dougherty died Friday, March 16, 2001, in Elkhart.

He is survived by his father, Carl Dougherty, Texhoma, Okla.; his wife, Sandra Dougherty, Elkhart; a son, Gerry Dougherty, Elkhart; a daughter, Jodi Peterson, Goodwell, Okla.; two brothers, Johnnie Dougherty, Texhoma, and Bill Dougherty, Edmond, Okla.; a sister, Becky Ellis, Elkhart; and three granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his mother; and a son, Jackie Dougherty.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Morton County Fair Rodeo, in care of Harrell Funeral Home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

Keith Munk

Wake service for Keith Munk, 48, of Grinnell, will be 7:30 tonight at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, Oakley. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Oakley, with the Revs. Bill Korf and Glenn Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Gaeland Cemetery, Orion.

Mr. Munk died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born May 22, 1952, at Quinter, the son of Joseph Anthony and Mary Esther (Schmidt) Munk.

A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of Country Chapel of Oakley, National Cattlemen's Association, Lewis Township Board in Gove County, and Grinnell Coop Board. He loved to play golf.

On Nov. 25, 1972, he married Mary Helen Cass at Oakley. She survives. He is also survived by his mother, Quinter; a son, Jason Munk, of the home; five brothers, Dick Munk, Newport, Neb., Frank Munk and Jodie Munk, both of Oakley, Garrie Munk, Syracuse, and Craig Munk, Winona; and four sisters, Naydene Spresser, Hoxie, Eloise Reed and Barbie Voth, both of Oakley, and Marietta Dreiling, Holdredge, Neb. He was preceded in death by his father, in 1979; and a sister, Billie Ostmeyer, in 1967.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Oakley Country Chapel, KSU Center for Basic Cancer Research or Scott County Hospital, all in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 221, Oakley, KS 67748.

James Gilbert Roland Perry

James Gilbert Roland Perry, 75, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

He was born Oct. 12, 1925, at Wagner, Okla., the son of Gilbert and Lizzie (Snaden) Perry. He grew up and attended school at Wagner and worked at Wilson Packing Co. He then served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.

He moved from Oklahoma to Wichita and worked for Backus Salvage Yard before moving to Garden City in 1971. He worked for Farmland Beef and the Kansas State Department in Garden City and was a member of Union Chapel Church of Wagner. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, gardening and traveling with his family.

He married Billie Sue Budd on Aug. 27, 1971, at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by seven sons, Marvin Perry and Tyrone Perry, both of Oklahoma City, Michael Perry, Branson, Mo., Kenneth Briscoe and Larry Briscoe, both of Garden City, Billie Budd, Dighton, and Kerry Budd, Wichita; five daughters, Debbie Budd Cooper, Zinnia Carr and Linda Williams, all of Garden City, Brenda Briscoe Knights, Springfield, Mo., and Lora Budd, Amarillo, Texas; two brothers, Curtis Perry and Robert Perry, both of Wichita; three sisters, Louella Smith and Lula McCray, both of Wichita, and Della Jackson, Chicago; 36 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wiley Roland and Charlie Perry; and a son, James Edward Perry.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Revs. Paul Bradshaw and Roger Bradshaw officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials to the James Gilbert Perry Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Albertine Carolyn Williams

Graveside service for Albertine Carolyn Williams, 84, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating.

Mrs. Williams died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

She was born July 14, 1916, in Garden City, the daughter of Norbert J. and Emma Jane (Dufrin) Becquet. In Garden City, she attended Lincoln School, Andrew Sabine Junior High School, graduated from Garden City High School in 1934 and attended Garden City Junior College.

In 1939 she supervised the National Youth Administration Writers in Garden City, working with young people who had an interest in writing about area history.

She lived in Wichita for a number of years before returning to Garden City. In the hair-styling business for 46 years, she owned and operated the Plaza Beauty Shop in Garden City from 1968 to 1970. In 1975, she opened Albertine's Beauty Nook in her home.

Mrs. Williams was a member of First Christian Church of Garden City, a life member of Order of Eastern Star No. 359, belonged to VFW Auxiliary, and was a 50-year member of Royal Neighbors.

On May 8, 1937, she married William Daniel Snyder. They divorced in 1957. She married Fred Willard on Dec. 10, 1966. He died in 1975. In 1983, she married Robert Williams. He survives.

She is also survived by a daughter, Kathye Knight, Carthage, Mo.; a son, Ronald K. Snyder, Frederick, Md.; two grandsons; a brother, Dr. N.J. Becquet, Little Rock, Ark.; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Finney County Historical Society, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.
