Elsie Fountain

Graveside service for Elsie Fountain, 100, of Garden City and formerly of Clark, Mo., will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Chapel Grove Cemetery near Clark.

Mrs. Fountain died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

She was born Sept. 3, 1900, at Clark, the daughter of Charlie and Sarah (Chism) Lewis. In 1921, she married Otis Fountain. He died in 1971. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Felecia Brownfield; a brother, Mark Lewis; and her parents.

A resident of the Garden City area for five years, Mrs. Fountain had lived at Terrace Garden Care Center for two years. She was a member of Clark Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, having held various offices in that organization. She enjoyed gardening and her flowers.

She is survived by a daughter, Felecia Carey, Garden City; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Price & Sons Funeral Home of Garden City and Cater Funeral Home of Moberly, Mo.

Franklin K. Oldweiler

HOLCOMB - Franklin K. Oldweiler, 85, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Dec. 23, 1915, at Straight Creek, the son of Ralph and Aura (Kent) Oldweiler. The family moved to Finney County in 1917. He graduated from Garden City High School and attended Garden City Community College.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as a tech sergeant during World War II, stationed in England, Africa and Corsica. After his discharge, he returned to Finney County, moving to Holcomb in 1948 where he was a lifelong farmer.

Mr. Oldweiler was a member of Community Congregational Church of Garden City, VFW of Holcomb, and Harry H. Renick American Legion Post No. 9 of Garden City, was honorary deacon and served many times on the church council, and was a life member of the Elks Lodge.

He was past president of the Finney County Wheatgrowers Association, belonged to the Kansas Wheatgrowers Association and the Kansas Hoggrowers Association, and was a former member of Holcomb School Board and Finney County Fair Board. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, writing poetry and editorials, and his family activities.

On Sept. 12, 1944, he married Elaine Edmiston at Garden City. She died in 1947. On June 28, 1948, he married Wreatha Cooper at Wichita. She died March 28, 1997. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Kent Cooper Oldweiler.

Survivors include a daughter, Kristi Lee Shabshab, El Dorado; two granddaughters; and a sister, Norma Dawson, Garden City.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Congregational Church, Garden City, with Dr. R. Michael Lake officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Harvey M. Buller

MONTEZUMA - Harvey M. Buller, 88, died today, March 14, 2001, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where he had been a resident since Jan. 15, 1996.

He was born Feb. 8, 1913, in McPherson County, the son of Enoch and Susie (Ratzlaff) Buller.

On Aug. 16, 1936, he married Julia Koehn at Cimarron. After their marriage, they moved from McPherson County to Montezuma. He was an elevator operator for Montezuma Co-op for 30 years and was a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite at Montezuma.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Vernon L. Buller, Duane Dale Buller and Ronald Ray Buller, all of Montezuma; a daughter, Sharon Kay Unruh, Wichita; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant brothers, Eben Buller and Leslie Buller; and an infant sister, Selma Buller.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Charles Schmidt, Kalvin Salsbury and Edwin Classen, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in North Mennonite Church Cemetery, Montezuma.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Raymond Deines

Raymond Deines, 75, a former Garden City resident, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach, Mo.

He was born Aug. 22, 1925, at Wellington, Colo., the son of John Henry Jr. and Kathrine Elizabeth (Mai) Deines. He grew up in Garden City and WaKeeney.

Mr. Deines worked as a foreman for a block and tile company and as a truck driver before serving his country in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954. After being honorably discharged from the service, he returned to work as a long distance truck driver and then worked as a farmer for several years. He then made his home in California from 1963 until 1970.

On March 25, 1971, he married Patty Calvert at Littleton, Colo., where he worked as a heavy equipment operator for Foothills Metropolitan Recreation and Park District until retiring April 30, 1987. He and his wife then made their home in Nebraska for the next eight years and moved to Camdenton, Mo., in 1995 to be closer to family.

Mr. Deines enjoyed elk hunting, fishing and doing woodworking projects.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Wesan Moran, Tulare, Calif.; two sons, Raymond Deines Jr., San Leandro, Calif., and Steven Von Deines, Mishicot, Wis.; four grandchildren; a brother, Walter Amil Deines, Bogue; four sisters, Ruth Goodson, Elma, Wash., Becky Ross, Lakewood, Colo., Louise Jones, Garden City, and Doris Silvan, Henderson, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Sam Deines; and a sister, Ester Mai.

Funeral was 2 p.m. Friday at Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Camdenton, with the Rev. John Davis officiating.

Alex Lee "Bud" Meier

Funeral for Bud Meier, 65, of Darrouzett, Texas, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Darrouzett, with the Rev. Bill Griffin officiating. Burial will be in Darrouzett Cemetery.

Mr. Meier died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Western Plains Regional Hospital in Dodge City.

Alex Lee "Bud" Meier was born July 6, 1935, at Shattuck, Okla., the son of Alex and Pauline (Schoenhals) Meier. He grew up in Darrouzett, where he graduated from high school in 1953. He then attended West Texas University, later transferring to Texas Tech University.

He served in the U.S. Army before returning to Darrouzett where he was engaged in farming and ranching. After marrying Ruby Janette "Jan" Cowan on May 15, 1960, at Wichita, the couple made their home in Darrouzett. She died in 1984. On June 6, 1987, he married Jewell Dean (Huey) Powell at Las Vegas, and they made their home in Darrouzett. She died in 1997.

Mr. Meier was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Darrouzett, the Texas Cattleman's Association, the Kansas Cattleman's Association and the National Cattleman's Association. He enjoyed rodeos, horse shows, traveling, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

On Jan. 29, 2000, he married Marlene (Mitch) Davis at Las Vegas. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Alan Meier, Canyon, Texas; a daughter, Lise LaFontaine, Aurora, Colo.; two grandchildren; a sister, Helen Ann Bechthold, Darrouzett; three stepdaughters, Carla Cossman, Jetmore, Lana Lindhorst, Wamego, and Darinda Gerber, Garden City; 11 stepgrandchildren; and two nephews.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the Jan Meier Educational Trust, both in care of the Booker Independent School District.

Good Samaritan Funeral Service, Booker, is in charge of arrangements.

Roger L. Scott

Funeral for Roger L. Scott, 81, of Smith Center, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Simmons Mortuary Chapel, Smith Center, with the Revs. Rhett Totten and Jim Coone officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center.

Mr. Scott died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.

He was born Jan. 20, 1920, at Bellaire. A lifetime resident of Smith Center, he taught at a rural school for five years, was a carpenter, and was employed as a tank wagon driver for Standard Oil for 26 years.

Mr. Scott was a member of the American Legion and Odd Fellows, where he received his 50-year pins, and belonged to the VFW and the Presbyterian Church, all at Smith Center. He was a U.S. Navy Seabees veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, Smith Center; a son, Bryce Scott, Smith Center; a stepson, Jerry Burgess, Concordia; two daughters, Saundra Rust, Las Vegas, and Lea Ann Curtis, Garden City; a stepdaughter, Sherry Angeles, Garden City; two sisters, Lanah Haresnape, Smith Center, and Dorothy Blair, Lincoln, Neb.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 15 stepgrandchildren; 19 stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild. His first wife, Kathryn M. Scott, died Nov. 14, 1973.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Smith County Memorial Hospital or Smith County Municipal Golf Course, both in care of the mortuary.

Rose Boxler

Vigil service for Rose Boxler, 93, of Pagosa Springs, Colo., will be 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by Daughters of Isabella rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Boxler died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Pine Ridge Extended Care Center in Pagosa Springs.

She was born Nov. 21, 1907, at Victoria, the daughter of Peter and Anna (Kapp) Wasinger. The family moved to Sitka where she grew up and attended schools.

On Sept. 27, 1932, she married Adolph Killian Boxler at Garden City. They lived on a farm north of Garden City until moving to Denver in 1972. He died Oct. 5, 1975. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jerry Boxler; four brothers, Raymond Wasinger, Edgar Wasinger, Frank Wasinger and Michael Wasinger; and four sisters, Helen Wasinger, Anna Maria "Emma" Brungardt, Emerentia Wasinger and Amelia Wasinger.

A Pagosa Springs resident since 1978, Mrs. Boxler was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, quilting and cooking. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church at Pagosa Springs, belonged to St. Mary Catholic Church while living in Garden City, and was a charter member of Daughters of Isabella, Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

She is survived by two sons, Gene Boxler, Littleton, Colo., and Wayne Boxler, Olathe; a daughter, Firma Lucas, Pagosa Springs; a sister, Anna Dinkel, Topeka; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Daughters of Isabella, in care of the funeral home.
