Esther Cornelison

HEALY - Funeral for Esther Cornelison, 85, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Healy, with the Rev. Randy Jellison-Knock officiating. Burial will be in Shields Cemetery.

Mrs. Cornelison died Friday, April 27, 2001, at Grisell Memorial Hospital in Ransom.

She was born Feb. 27, 1916, in Ness County, the daughter of Esco and Bedia (Russell) McBee. She attended a country school in Ness County and graduated from Utica High School in 1935. She then taught school for one year.

On Aug. 29, 1939, she married Truman C. Cornelison at Ness City. They lived in California for two years before returning to Lane County where they began farming on their own in 1946. They moved into Healy in 1967. Her husband died March 31, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and six sisters.

Mrs. Cornelison's special interest was cooking, especially making candy, and she had cooked for the Healy schools for four years. She was a member of Healy Bible Study Group and enjoyed crocheting, quilting, collecting dishes and bells, and visiting by telephone with her relatives.

She is survived by a son, Ken Cornelison, Costa Mesa, Calif.; a daughter, Trula Davis, Shields; three grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the Healy High School Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Miguel Cortez

ULYSSES - Funeral for Miguel Cortez, 74, of Ulysses, was to be 2 p.m. today at Mission Bautista, Ulysses, with the Rev. Manuel Perez officiating. Burial was to follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Mr. Cortez died Friday, April 27, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 8, 1926, at Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Zeveriano and Narsiza (Lujan) Cortez.

A Ulysses resident since 1979, he worked at Western Prairie Care Home and Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital as a janitor. He was a member of Mission Bautista.

On March 18, 1946, he married Eloisa Leyva-Hernandez in Mexico. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Mike Cortez, and five daughters, Angelica Ochoa, Olga Delao, Toribia Galindo, Anabelia Galindo and Eloina Castilleja, all of Ulysses; three brothers, Juan Cortez, Great Bend, Pascual Cortez and Natividad Cortez, and two sisters, Josefa Hernandez and Maxima Cortez, all of Mexico; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Reyes Leyva.

Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses, was in charge of arrangements.

Bernice A. McMahan

SYRACUSE - Bernice A. McMahan, 89, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in Syracuse.

She was born Oct. 18, 1911, at Coolidge, the daughter of Charles and Lela (Lineberry) Ritchie. She graduated from high school in Holly, Colo., and later attended business school in Chillicothe, Mo.

On April 20, 1932, she married Dan McMahan at Tribune. He died Sept. 3, 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a son, Larry McMahan.

A lifelong resident of Hamilton County, she was a member of Syracuse Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Eastern Star. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting and other crafts.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane Kinzie, Branson, Mo.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday in Coolidge Cemetery, with the Rev. Bob Goebel officiating.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MDT Tuesday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Home Care Services, in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.

Lela G. Padgett

Lela G. Padgett, 79, of Curtis, Neb., died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at North Platte, Neb.

She was born July 16, 1921, at Peyton, Colo., the daughter of Daniel J. and Alpha May (Brose) Lamb. She grew up in Colorado, graduating from Ellicot (Colo.) High School in 1939.

On July 9, 1940, she married James "Jack" Padgett at Raton, N.M. They moved to North Platte in 1984. He died Feb. 2, 1985. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jacqueline; a son, James; her parents; four sisters; and six brothers.

Mrs. Padgett moved to Garden City in 1986 and lived here until moving to Curtis in 1990. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and St. John's Lutheran Church in Curtis, and a former member of the Wranglerets Horse Drill Team. She enjoyed various outdoor activities including horseback riding, fishing and hunting, and enjoyed her dog, "Cuddles."

She is survived by two daughters, Janet Vass, Cozad, Neb., and Cindy Nelson, Curtis; two sons, Ron, Lexington, Neb., and Gary, Maywood, Neb.; a brother, Woodrow Lamb, National City, Calif.; 24 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and several good friends residing at Frontier Village.

Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Curtis, with the Rev. Paul Warneke officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, Neb.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Tuesday at Blase-Wetzel Funeral Home, Curtis. Memorials are suggested to the Shriners, Great Plains Hospice of North Platte or the Cancer Society, all in care of the funeral home.

Ethel Eva Hawkins

HUGOTON - Funeral for Ethel Eva Hawkins, 81, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Assembly Of God Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Mrs. Hawkins died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton, where she had resided for several years.

She was born June 3, 1919, in Carroll County, Ark., the daughter of John David and Margaret Rebecca (Allen) McCollough.

On Nov. 19, 1937, she married Ray Orval Hawkins at Kansas City, Mo. They moved from Siloam Springs, Ark., to Hugoton in 1949. He died May 8, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Homer, David, Cecil and Robert McCollough; and two sisters, Martha Rose and Winnie Hawkins.

Mrs. Hawkins was a homemaker and had cooked at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton for more than 20 years. She was a member of Assembly Of God Church.

Survivors include a son, David Ray Hawkins, Liberal; two daughters, Margaret May Duncan, Lakin, and Beulah Faye Buhrmann, Hugoton; two brothers, Cleo McCollough, Siloam Springs, and Carthel McCollough, Dodge City; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, and from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or Pioneer Manor, both in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Estelene Smith

DIGHTON - Funeral for Estelene Smith, 85, was to be 2 p.m. today at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Revs. Mike Grogan and Kerry Grogan officiating. Burial was to be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith died Friday, April 27, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Jan. 2, 1916, at Dighton, the daughter of Ernest Richard and Eva Clare (Owen) Bush. She attended Walnut Valley School in Lane County and graduated from Dighton High School.

She taught school for several years and then became a clerk at the Dighton Post Office and was later promoted to Postmistress of the Kalvesta Post Office.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Amy Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary of Dighton. Her special interests were raising flowers and vegetables and delivering them to various people around town. She also enjoyed cooking.

On Aug. 29, 1936, she married Vinton R. Smith at Dodge City. He died Jan. 31, 1965. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Evelyn Clark; two brothers, Lee Bush and Robert Bush; and an infant brother.

Survivors include a son, Lynn Smith, Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Bert Bush, Laramie, Wyo.; and two sisters, Esther Church, Dighton, and Ethel Dodge, Waverly, Neb.

Memorials are suggested to Lane County Hospital, in care of Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton.

Charlotte A. Tasker

SCOTT CITY - Charlotte A. Tasker, 88, died Friday, April 27, 2001, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

She was born Aug. 25, 1912, at Americus, the daughter of Jesse and Carrie Effie Mae (Fry) Emmel.

A resident of Scott City since 1966, moving from Garden City, she was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Garden City.

On March 17, 1934, she married William A. Tasker at Herington. He died Sept. 15, 1964, at Garden City. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Snyder, in 1980.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Parnell, Tecumseh, and Joan Shirley, Scott City; a brother, Richard Emmel, Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Lenora Gist, Golden, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. John Waring officiating. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Monday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Scott County Hospital or Scott County Emergency Medical Services, both in care of the funeral home, 401 Washington St., Scott City, KS 67871.
