Roberto Sosa

HUGOTON - Rosary for Roberto Sosa, 71, of Hugoton, will be 7 tonight at St. Helen Catholic Church, Hugoton. Liturgy of the Word service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Fred Gatschet officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Mr. Sosa died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Jan. 4, 1930, at Wright, the son of Salvador and Juana (de Santigo) Sosa. He graduated from Garden City Community College and Wichita State University.

A Hugoton resident since 1958, he was a speech therapist for the Hugoton School District. He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church, Kansas Knights of Columbus third and fourth degree, Lions Club, Recreation Commission, Ministerial Alliance and the St. Catherine Hospital Hospice Board. He taught golf and archery in the summer to youth in Hugoton, and was a hunter education instructor.

Mr. Sosa served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, held the rank of corporal, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award, Purple Heart and the Korean Distinguished Service Medal.

In 1960, he married Glyndene Ray Zaloudek. She died in 1975. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Margaret Limon and Elvera Sosa.

On June 23, 1979, he married Annette Meier at Hugoton. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Roberto Sosa II, Hugoton; two daughters, Allison Sosa and Elizabeth Sosa, both of the home; two brothers, John Sosa, Johnson, and Salvador Sosa, Liberal; two half brothers, John Sosa and Mark Sosa, both of Ulysses; two sisters, Josephine Taul, Ulysses, and Molly Herrin, Valley Station, Ky.; three half sisters, Stella Ibarra, Gloria Hernandez and Mita Franco, all of Ulysses; and two grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 5 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials to the Bob Sosa Memorial Scholarship Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 423 S. Main St., Hugoton, KS 67951.

Loretta D. McCrea

Funeral for Loretta D. McCrea, 60, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Blue Lake (Calif.) Cemetery.

Mrs. McCrea died Monday, April 9, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born May 22, 1940, at Fortuna, Calif., the daughter of Ruel and Elizabeth (Miller) Reckord.

A Garden City resident since 1993, moving from Blue Lake, she was a homemaker. She had served as secretary of the Humbolt County Women's Bowling Association of Eureka, Calif.

On Feb. 7, 1959, she married Robert E. McCrea at Hoopa, Calif. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Sam McCrea, Durango, Colo., and Robert McCrea, Weed, Calif.; two daughters, Mary Underwood, Garden City, and Tammi Avenson, Ketchikan, Alaska; a brother, Frank Reckord, Greensboro, N.C.; and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Crider.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home in Garden City, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Paul's Funeral Home in Arcata, Calif., with the family receiving friends that evening.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

Cheryl Kaye Martin

HUGOTON - Vigil service for Cheryl Kaye Martin, 32, of Hugoton, will be 7:30 tonight at St. Helen Catholic Church, Hugoton. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Revs. Francis Khoi Nguyen and James Baker officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Mrs. Martin died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

She was born Aug. 25, 1968, at Hugoton, the daughter of Galen K. and Carolyn Kaye (Phillips) Keith. She graduated from Hugoton High School in 1986 and attended West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas. She had ran cross country for four years and belonged to 4-H.

A lifetime resident of Hugoton, she was a homemaker and worked as a secretary for Martin Trucking at Hugoton. She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church. Her hobbies were cross stitching, gardening and yard work, and she enjoyed caring for her family.

On May 20, 1989, she married William B. Martin at Hugoton. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Tucker William Martin and Cole Micheal Martin, both of the home; her parents, Hugoton; a sister, Ashley Gail Dawdy, Aubrey, Texas; and her grandparents, Kenneth and Lora Keith, Hugoton, and Maxine Phillips, also of Hugoton. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Ebert R. Phillips.

Memorials are suggested to the Educational Fund for Cheryl Martin's two sons, or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, both in care of Paul's Funeral Home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Ted J. Valdez Sr.

ULYSSES - Ted J. Valdez Sr., 49, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born July 29, 1951, at Raton, N.M., the son of Jose Aucencio and Marie E. (Esqivel) Valdez. He graduated from Otero Community College in La Junta, Colo.

A Ulysses resident since 1977, he had worked at the Grant County Court House and Gibsons and was a custodian at Ulysses High School for the past four years. He was a member of Family Worship Center International Church of Ulysses.

On April 20, 1968, he married Alice Guzman at Holly, Colo. She survives. He is also survived by his mother, Las Vegas, N.M.; two sons, Theodore J. Valdez Jr. and Jeremy Carlos Rodriquez, both of Ulysses; a daughter, Doris Ann Rodriquez, Ulysses; three brothers, Alex Ruben Valdez Sr., Jose LeRoy Valdez and Alex Ruben Valdez Jr., all of Las Vegas, N.M.; four grandchildren; and four nephews that he raised, Robert Lee Valdez, Jonathan Adam Valdez, Michael Valdez and Jared Valdez. He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Benito Domigo Valdez; and a grandson.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Family Worship Center International Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Charlie Rogers officiating. An evening service will begin at 7 Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours will be from 5 p.m. today at the church until service time Friday. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Josephine Basgall

SCOTT CITY - Vigil prayer service for Josephine Basgall, 91, will be 7 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City, with the Rev. David Kraus officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mrs. Basgall died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

She was born April 17, 1909, at Hays, the daughter of Michael and Aplonia (Dome) Pfeifer.

A Scott City resident since 1951, moving from Ashland, she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella.

On May 28, 1929, she married Adolph Basgall at Ness City. He died April 1, 1986, at Scott City. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers and one grandchild.

She is survived by four daughters, Joyce Schaffer, Brawley, Calif., Delores Gentry, Bossier, La., Norma Steffens, Imperial Valley, Calif., and Donna Wright, Scott City; a son, Dennis Basgall, Henderson, Nev.; a brother, John Pfeifer, Cheyenne Wells, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 7 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are to Masses, in care of the funeral home.

Pearl M. Dowse

COPELAND - Graveside service for Pearl M. Dowse, 95, of Dodge City and formerly of Copeland, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Copeland Cemetery, with the Rev. Larry Donelson officiating.

Mrs. Dowse died Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Home in Dodge City.

She was born Nov. 23, 1905, at Great Bend, the daughter of William and Nellie (Tucker) Kimler.

On Oct. 29, 1927, she married Harold L. Dowse at St. John. He died Aug. 14, 1947. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Donald Lee Kimler and Charles A. Kimler; and a grandson.

Mrs. Dowse moved from Copeland to Dodge City in 1970 and had lived at the Dodge City High Rise for 23 years before moving into the Good Samaritan Home eight years ago. She was a member of Copeland Christian Church. A homemaker, she enjoyed her family.

She is survived by two sons, Basil G. Dowse, Dodge City, and Malen E. Dowse, Topeka; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8, at Burkhart Funeral Home, Dodge City, and from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Home or Dodge City Public Library, both in care of Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Keith E. Sexson

Funeral for Keith E. Sexson, 84, of Hays, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays. Officiants will be the Revs. Don Zimmerman, David Metz, August Moeder and Carl Kramer, and Monsignor Clem Kruse. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, with military honors conducted by the VFW and American Legion.

A Perpetual Adorers rosary was to be at 3 p.m. today. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:30 tonight, followed by a parish vigil service at 7 and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Mr. Sexson died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at his home in Hays.

He was born Nov. 9, 1916, at Weskan, the son of John E. and Ellen (Swanson) Sexson.

A farmer and rural mail carrier for 42 years in the Weskan area, he was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus Council No. 6984, Rural Mail Carriers Association and the Perpetual Adorers. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

On June 7, 1943, he married Eleanor Younger at Fort Ord, Calif. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Keith "Skip" Sexson Jr., Pratt, Charles Sexson, Topeka, and Mark Sexson, Garden City; two daughters, Sherrill Ruda, Hays, and Caroleana Greiser-Sexson, Plano, Texas; a sister, Eileen Smith, Weskan; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Nels David Sexson, Bill Sexson, Robert Sexson and Iley Sexson; and two sisters, Augusta Laura Law and Lillian Coss.

Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 tonight and 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Holy Family Elementary School, 1800 Milner, Hays, KS 67601.
