Marvin L. Dirks
SCOTT CITY - Marvin L. Dirks, 72, Scott City, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born May 9, 1928, at Durham, the son of Albert and Marie (Unruh) Dirks.
He was a lifetime resident of Scott City, having moved from Halstead in the early 1940's. He was a salesman and a member of the Scott Mennonite Church, Pence.
On March 20, 1948, he married Lucille Unruh at the Scott Mennonite Church. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Vicki Dirks, Scott City; four sisters, Norma Unruh, Galva, Elizabeth Koehn, McPherson, and Lillian Schroeder and Willetta Payne, both of Scott City; four brothers, Floyd, Albert, Howard and Maurice Dirks, all of Scott City; and a grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant sons, Terry and Tommy, two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Scott Mennonite Church, Pence, with the Rev. Richard Koehn presiding. Burial will be at Scott Mennonite Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.
Memorials may be made to Scott County EMS or Park Lane Nursing Home in care of the funeral home.
Evelyn K. Morrell
Evelyn K. Morrell, 90, Garden City, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.
She was born on Jan. 28, 1911, at Beardsley, the daughter of Aloys and Susan (Sobba) Zrubek.
She graduated from the Venus Academy of Beauty Culture, Wichita, in 1931. For the next 35 years she lived in Wichita and Willow Springs, Mo., moving to Garden City in 1966. In 1976, she moved to Syracuse and then moved back to Garden City in 1988. She owned and operated beauty salons in Missouri and Kansas, the latest being Evelyn's Style-A-Rama, Garden City. After her retirement she worked for Terrace Garden Care Center as a part-time beautician. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening and traveling.
She was a member of the Baptist Church, Garden City, the National Cosmetology Association and the Finney County Senior Center.
On May 1, 1937, she married William Sharp Jr. at Wichita. He died July 9, 1966, at Garden City. On Aug. 3, 1976, she married Frank Morrell in Oklahoma. He died March 3, 1987, in Lakin.
Survivors include two nieces, Betty Greer and Marilyn Morgan, both of Deerfield, and several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Monty Sharp, and eight brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell presiding. Burial will be at the Deerfield Cemetery.
Friends may call until 5 tonight and from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

Maxine L. Guerrero
HUGOTON - Maxine L. Guerrero, 71, Hugoton, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Stevens County Hospital, Hugoton.
The daughter of Frederick L. and Florence M. (Mangus) Kinter, she was born June 20, 1929, at Speed, Kan. She moved to Hugoton in 1958.
She married Joe B. Guerrero on Sept. 12, 1959, in Clayton, N.M. She was a homemaker and a secretary for Joe B. Guerrero Oil Company, Hugoton.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, St. Helen Catholic Church and V.F.W. Auxiliary and a past den mother for Cub Scouts, all of Hugoton.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Gerald D. and Catherine Guerrero, Chesapeake, Va., and Bradford L. and Michaela Ramsey, Hot Springs, S.D.; one sister and her husband, Dorothy Hagman, Hugoton; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Rebecca; an infant son and a sister, Florence Mae White.
Rosary will be 7:30 tonight at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hugoton Cemetery
with the Rev. Francis Khoi Nguyen and Rev. Nel Homes presiding.
Friends may call until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Paul's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Leonard A. Steffens
SCOTT CITY - Leonard A. Steffens, 94, Scott City, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Park Lane Nursing Home, Scott City.
He was born Dec. 26, 1906, in Colwich, the son of Bernard and Anna (Strunk) Steffens. He was a lifetime resident of Healy, having moved from Colwich in February of 1923.
He was a farmer and a stockman. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Farm Bureau, all of Scott City, and the Kansas Wheat Growers Association.
On Oct. 6, 1930, he married Katherine Opal Wendler in Ness City. She died Sept. 22, 1980, in Garden City.
Survivors include five sons, Pete and Richard Steffens, both of Scott City, Tom Steffens, Beloit, and Larry and Lou Steffens, both of Imperial Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Sherill Barnett, Healy; 24 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sons and two grandchildren.
A vigil prayer service will be at 7 tonight at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City. Funeral mass will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. David Kraus officiating. Burial will be at Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation will be until 7 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home.
Memorials may be given to Scott County Hospital or the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home.
Robert A. Turley
SCOTT CITY - Robert A. Turley, 90, Scott City, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Scott County Hospital, Scott City.
He was born Dec. 22, 1910, in Gove County, the son of Robert A. and Mary (Borst) Turley. He was a resident of Scott County since 1928, having moved from Gove County. He was a farmer and a member of First Baptist Church, Scott City.
He married Erma Katherine Cranmer on June 1, 1938, in Scott County. She died Sept. 28, 1999, in Scott City.
Survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Tina Turley, Modoc; three brothers, Willie Turley, WaKeeney, Clarence Turley, Scott City, and Ralph Turley, Ava, Mo.; three sisters, Dorothy Blume and Vanna Hatler, both of Scott City, and Elsie Wren, Marietta, Calif.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a brother and a sister.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Burial will be at Scott County Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.
