John Mark Harden

Vigil service for John Mark Harden, 17, of Lexington, was from 6:30 to 8:30 Tuesday at the Methodist Church, Ashland. Funeral was to be 2 p.m. today at Ashland High School, with the Revs. Brad Foster, David Blanchard and Shirley Wiley officiating. Burial was to follow in Lexington Cemetery, in the Lexington community northeast of Ashland.

He died Saturday, March 31, 2001, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Ashland.

Born July 31, 1983, at Coldwater, he was the son of Jim and Mary (George) Harden.

A junior at Ashland High School, he participated in football, basketball, track, Quiz Bowl, Stuco, A-Club, FCA Forensics, Academic Olympics and band, was on the honor roll, and was a member of the National Honor Society and Peer Helper. He was a member of Assembly of God Church of Ashland, United Methodist Youth Fellowship and Awesome Christian.

He is survived by his parents, of the home; his grandparents, Willis and Velmarie Harden, Ashland, and DelLoyd and Marian George, Garden City; a sister, Joanna Joy Harden, of the home; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Memorials are suggested to Victorious Christian Harvesters Bible School, in care of Myatt Funeral Home, P.O. Box 578, Ashland, KS 67831.

Albert Herrera

Vigil service for Albert Herrera, 79, of Dodge City, will be 7:30 tonight at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Ted Skalsky officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City, with military rites conducted by Howard Gotschall Post No. 1714 VFW.

Mr. Herrera died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born April 6, 1921, at Dodge City, the son of Lucas and Paula (Amaro) Herrera. He graduated from Dodge City High School.

A lifetime resident of Dodge City, he worked as a repairman for the Santa Fe Railroad and also worked construction in Dodge City. After his retirement, he served as a driver for Green Thumb. Since 1996 he had been a resident of the Kansas Soldiers' Home at Fort Dodge.

Mr. Herrera was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, a lifetime member of Howard Gotschall Post No. 1714 VFW, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

On Dec. 26, 1946, he married Theresa Ascencio at Dodge City. She survives. He is also survived by six sons, David Herrera and Tim Herrera, both of Dodge City, Eric Herrera, Wichita, Loran Herrera, Manhattan, Patrick Herrera, Garden City, and Rene Herrera, Hutchinson; three daughters, Veronica Herrera, Montezuma, Carol Holmes, Fayetteville, N.C., and Janine Russell, Dodge City; three sisters, Amparo Herrera, Nellie Herrera and Juanita Perales, all of Dodge City; a brother, George Herrera, Chihuahua, Mexico; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Albert Herrera Memorial Fund, in care of Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.

Margaret L. Duncan

CIMARRON - Vigil service for Margaret L. Duncan, 74, will be 7 tonight at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Ingalls. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph E. Bahr officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.

Mrs. Duncan died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Western Plains Regional Hospital in Dodge City.

She was born Dec. 27, 1926, at Chase, the daughter of Tom and Grace (Stumps) Robinson.

A Cimarron resident since 1969, moving from Great Bend, she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and Altar Society, both at Ingalls.

On Dec. 17, 1946, she married Stanley E. Duncan at Chase. He survives. She is also survived by five sons, Jim, Jerry, Joey, Mark and David, all of Cimarron; two daughters, Rita Smith and Gail Young, both of Cimarron; a brother, Russell Robinson, Hutchinson; four sisters, Betty Komarek, Cimarron, Katherine Yowell, California, Louise Johnson, Houston, and Sister Margaret Simmott, Wichita; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Simmott and Leo Robinson.

Visitation hours are until 5 tonight at Burkhart's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, in care of the funeral chapel, P.O. Box 786, Cimarron, KS 67835.

Norma Jane Heston

HUGOTON - Norma Jane Heston, 66, of Hugoton, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born Aug. 28, 1934, at Liberal, the daughter of Otho Everett and Hulda Jane (Michael) Rasler.

A homemaker, she had been a resident of the Hugoton community most of her life. She attended First Church Of God and enjoyed spending time with her family.

On March 29, 1953, she married William Junior Heston at Hugoton. He died Dec. 5, 1999.

She is survived by three daughters, Connie Murphy and Loretta Woodworth, both of Hugoton, and Alpha Heston, Salina; a brother, Clarence Rasler, Kelso, Wash.; three sisters, Goldie Kerns, Hooker, Okla., Donna Sutton and Dorothy Staples, both of Hugoton; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 tonight, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Norma Jane Heston Memorial Fund may be mailed to the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Robert Wilson "Bob" Clark

MARIENTHAL - Robert Wilson "Bob" Clark, 77, of Santa Fe, Texas, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in Texas City, Texas.

Born at Marienthal on May 7, 1924, he was the son of Robert and Adlee (Wilson) Clark.

A Santa Fe resident for 32 years, previously of Galveston, Texas, he had worked as a truck and automobile mechanic for many years before opening and operating his saw sharpening business of more than 20 years, Complete Sharpening Service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Doralee "Sue" Clark; his daughters, Rebecca Sue Smith, Waco, Texas, Linda Lee Noto, Santa Fe, Ruth Ellen Yost, Leoti, Kathleen Anne Skibbe, Lenexa, and Janelle Diane Sword, Phoenix; his sons, Robert James Clark, Dayton, Texas, Tommy John Currier, Santa Fe, Carl James Currier Jr., Houston, Russell Gordon Currier, Baton Rouge, La., Timothy Lee Clark, Haverhill, Mass., and Mark Wayne Clark, Lincoln, Neb.; his sisters, Evelyn Clark, Elko, Nev., Margaret Koestel, Grand Junction, Colo., and Barbara Clark, Liberal; 22 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Richard A. "Dick" Clark.

Mr. Clark was to be cremated. A private family gathering is planned.

Memorials are suggested to The Hospice Care Team, 1708 Amburn, Suite C, Texas City, Texas 77591-2436.

Hayes Funeral Home, Santa Fe, was in charge of arrangements.

Madison Marie Vardeman

ULYSSES - Graveside service for Madison Marie Vardeman, the daughter of Justin and Shiella Marie (Wise) Vardeman of Ulysses, will be 3 p.m. Friday in Ulysses Cemetery, with the Rev. Warren Baldwin officiating.

Madison was stillborn Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Bud and Samma Wise, and Joe Bill and Terri Vardeman, all of Ulysses; her great-grandparents, Otehka Wise, and Robert and Eunice Comer, all of Ulysses, Jo Vardeman of Dallas, and Larry and Evelyn Barnard, Levelland, Texas; and two aunts. She was preceded in death by her great-grandfathers, James Windol Wise and Bill Vardeman; two uncles; and her great-grandmother, Eileen Comer.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested for the family, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Leon S. Pena

ULYSSES - Rosary service for Leon S. Pena, 78, will be 7 p.m. Friday at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses, with funeral Mass planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. The Rev. Louis Trung Dinh Hoang will officiate. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Mr. Pena died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at his home in Ulysses.

He was born April 17, 1923, at Denison, Texas, the son of Fermin and Esther (Silva) Pena.

A Ulysses resident since 1960, formerly of Johnson City, he was a farmer and enjoyed caring for his family. For the last 11 years, he had worked for Marvin's Farm Equipment Repair.

Mr. Pena was a member of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

On Jan. 16, 1954, he married Mary Mendoza at Childress, Texas. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Henry Pena, Liberal, and Leon Pena Jr., Ulysses; a daughter, Patricia Kinsinger, Ulysses; a brother, Frank Pena, Dallas; two sisters, Eva Anderson, Denison, and Christina Diehl, Fort Worth, Texas; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Francin and Esther Pena.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.
