Jo Ellen "Jode" Spears

Memorial service for Jo Ellen "Jode" Spears, 44, was 10 a.m. Monday at Amory Funeral Home Chapel, Grafton, Va. A memorial graveside service is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. James Baker officiating.

Mrs. Spears died Saturday, May 12, 2001.

She was born Sept. 1, 1956, at Garden City, the daughter of Joseph A. and Margaret E. (Gatlin) Bayer.

A native of Garden City, she had been a resident of Penisula, Va., since 1995. She was formerly employed as a cashier for the Crown Gas Station in Grafton and most recently worked at the Lakeside Texaco Station.

She is survived by two sons, Eldon Bayer, Pierceville, and Brian Spears, York County, Va.; a daughter, Chrystal Spears, Newport News, Va.; six brothers, Donald Bayer, Ponca City, Okla., Martin Bayer, Gentry, Ark., Karl Bayer, Pineville, Mo., Adam Bayer, Lester Bayer and Rex Bayer, all of Garden City; six sisters, Catherine Base, Independence, Patricia Quint, Mesa, Ariz., Mary Burrell, Siloam Springs, Ark., Karen Lubbers and Toni Martin, both of Garden City, and Sharon Moran, Yorktown; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Jo Ellen Spears Memorial Fund, in care of Eldon Bayer, 404 S. Spruce, Pierceville, KS 67868.

Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, is in charge of local arrangements.

Richard Lee Jantzen

ULYSSES - Richard Lee Jantzen, 53, of rural Ulysses, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, in an elevator accident at Hickok.

He was born Dec. 4, 1947, at Atwater, Calif., the son of Samuel Ray and Julia Mae (Koehn) Jantzen.

On Aug. 3, 1969, he married Linda Lou Seiler at Carson City, Mich. They moved from Alabama to the Ulysses area in 1985. Mr. Jantzen was the manager of the Hickok Co-op Elevator and a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Ulysses.

He is survived by his wife; four sons, Kurt, Ulysses, Kale, Bridgewater, Maine, Kent and Kevin, both of the home; a daughter, Kristi Nightingale, Satanta; four brothers, David, Gruver, Texas, Stuart, Ulysses, John, Texarkana, Texas, and James, Newbern, Ala.; a sister, LuEtta Ensz, Newbern; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Steven.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grant Mennonite Church, Ulysses. Denton Koehn, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Grant Mennonite Cemetery, Ulysses.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested for the family, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Delfina Orozco Guerrero

Vigil service for Delfina Orozco Guerrero, 78, will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Guerrero died Monday, May 14, 2001, at her home in Garden City.

She was born Oct. 25, 1922, at Lyons, the son of Augustine P. and Jessie (Marquez) Orozco. In 1930, the family moved to Garden City where she attended school.

A homemaker, Mrs. Guerrero's hobbies were cooking, canning, gardening, and spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

On May 31, 1938, she married Jose T. "Joe" Guerrero at Garden City. He died March 29, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Bobby Guerrero; five brothers; two sisters; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Survivors include seven sons, Ben, Lawrence, Nick, John, Henry "Hank," Rick and Eddie, all of Garden City; a daughter, Elvira Guerrero Jalomo, Fort Worth, Texas; 33 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, the Cancer Society or the donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Christopher Paul Wasinger

Visitation for Christopher Paul Wasinger, 31, of Grand Junction, Colo., is planned from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Grand Junction, with Mass to begin at 6 p.m.

Cremation is planned. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Scott City. Burial of the cremains will follow.

Mr. Wasinger died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Family Health West in Fruita, Colo.

Born in Garden City on Aug. 1, 1969, he was the son of Leonard A. and Joan M. (Fief) Wasinger. He grew up in Kansas, moving to Colorado in 2000. His interests included music, water activities, and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his mother, Grand Junction; two brothers, Kurt Wasinger of Colorado and the Rev. Shane Wasinger, Minneapolis; two sisters, Kyra Fief, Garden City, and Lori Betz, Montrose, Colo.; his grandmother, Irene Gunkel, Garden City; and six nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, Grand Junction, is in charge of arrangements.

Jack Dwayne Paris

SUBLETTE - Jack Dwayne Paris, 28, of Sublette, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Oklahoma City, from injuries suffered in an accident near Beaver, Okla.

He was born June 24, 1972, at Roswell, N.M., the son of George Paris and Jan Marie Roberts. He was a graduate of Sublette High School.

Mr. Paris had worked as a cowboy for feedyards in the area. He played basketball, lived and loved team roping, and enjoyed meeting people and spending time with his friends. He was a member of the International Feedlot Cowboys Association and the U.S. Team Roping Association.

Survivors include his wife, Charleen L., whom he married Nov. 12, 1999, at Sublette; a daughter, Samantha Marie Paris, of the home; his parents, George and Elaine Paris, Sublette, and Doug and Jan Liby, Roswell; two sisters, Desi Paris, Sublette, and Tonya Paris, Garden City; a brother, Cody Liby, Wichita; and his grandparents, Lester and Wanda Paris, Los Lunas, N.M., Dorothy Roberts, Roswell, and Jessie and Edward Novack, Offerle. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jack Roberts.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Christian Church, Sublette, with the Rev. David Erwin officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials for the family may be sent in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Larry Houk

Larry Houk, 58, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Dec. 4, 1942, at Lawrence, the son of Frank W. and Edith M. (Buchheim) Houk.

A longtime resident of Liberal and Garden City, he enjoyed country music and cowboys. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City and the R.E.A.C.H. program.

There are no survivors.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Cruz Nieto Urias

ULYSSES - Cruz Nieto Urias, 74, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at her home in Ulysses.

She was born May 3, 1927, at Meoqui, Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Nieves and Guadalupe (Larrea) Nieto.

She is survived by four sons, Rejino Urias, Odessa, Texas, Jesus Urias, Andres Urias and Jose J. Urias, all of Ulysses; three daughters, Margarita Lopez, Guadalupe Hernandez and Santos Nieto, and three brothers, Juan Nieto, Francisco Nieto and Bruno Nieto, all of Mexico; and several grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesus V. Urias, on June 15, 1987; her parents; and two brothers.

Funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday in Loreto, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses.
