Norma Jean Shaul

Norma Jean Shaul, 73, of Garden City, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born July 27, 1917, at Garden City, the daughter of Charles "Doc" and Blanche (Nester) Humphrey. She attended schools in Deerfield.

A longtime bookkeeper for Zale's Jewelry in Fort Worth, Texas, she returned to Garden City in 1975, moved to Ainsworth, Neb., and then moved back to Garden City in 1982. She enjoyed quilting and playing bingo.

She married Dale Collins, who died in 1975. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ronnie Collins; and two brothers, Arnold Humphrey and Mace Humphrey.

On July 21, 1977, she married Floyd Shaul at Pittsburg. He survives. She is also survived by three sons, Jimmy Collins, Garden City, Donnie Collins, Fort Worth, and Marland Collins, Pennsylvania; three daughters, Jeanne McClendon, Fort Worth, Marilyn Jeffries and Nonie Hamm, both of Palo Pinto, Texas; her mother, Garden City; two sisters, Vivian Coerber, Deerfield, and Leila Hagler, Bella Vista, Ark.; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Harry Walz officiating.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Chastin Dee Peterson

HUGOTON - Chastin Dee Peterson, 19, of Hugoton, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton. He had been injured in a four-wheeler accident.

He was born July 8, 1981, at Hugoton, the son of Steven and Tammie (Crane) Peterson.

A lifetime resident of Hugoton, he was employed by the Paramount trucking service. He was a member of First Christian Church of Hugoton, and enjoyed four-wheeling, working on four-wheelers and trucks, camping, jet skiing and fishing.

He is survived by his parents, Hugoton; his girlfriend, Amanda Lay, and a son, Wyatt Lane, of Stinnett, Texas; two brothers, Bryce Peterson, Garden City, and Ty Peterson, Hugoton; a sister, Tanae Cox, Hugoton; his grandparents, Mary Lou Peterson, Karolyn Crane, and Don and Beverly Crane, all of Hugoton; his great-grandparents, Paul and Mary Slocum, and Gracie Crane, all of Hugoton; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Bill Peterson and Walter Crane; his great-grandparents, Kester and Ruth Gentzler; and an aunt.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Gary Stafford officiating. Burial will follow in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today through Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Hugoton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to a scholarship fund for his son, in care of the funeral home, 423 S. Main St., Hugoton, KS 67951.

Harold Vernon Baker

Harold Vernon Baker, 88, of Garden City, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born here Aug. 19, 1912, the son of Oliver Otto and Alice (Pearce) Baker, and had lived in Garden City for most of his life.

He graduated from Garden City High School in 1930, received his bachelor's degrees in piano and music education from Bethany College in Lindsborg, and earned his master's degree in music education from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Mr. Baker taught vocal music for six years in Kansas and Indiana before being employed for 18 years at Fidelity State Bank in Garden City. He worked in the accounting department at Oswalt Industries for five years, retiring in 1972.

A lifetime member of First Christian Church in Garden City, joining in 1921, he had served as a deacon and an elder. In 1997 the church honored him with 68 years of service in the music department where he played the piano and organ and directed the choir during that time.

He was one of the founders and a charter member of the Southwest Kansas Community Concert Association, serving on the board of directors for many years. During that time, he had served in the capacity of secretary, treasurer and president.

Mr. Baker was also a member of Christian Men's Fellowship, Loyal Leaders Sunday School class, American Association of Retired Persons and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. He gave piano, organ and voice lessons for many years, and his hobbies included his music, photography and traveling.

He is survived by his cousins, Vesta Fulgham and Murral Baker, both of Colorado, Lila Haag, California, and Beth Hollaway, Satanta. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Thelma F. Baker.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from noon to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Garden Valley Retirement Village, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Nicholas "Nick" Rome

Vigil service and rosary for Nicholas "Nick" Rome, 49, of Garden City, will be 7 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 9 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Carlos Garcia-Pena officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.

Mr. Rome died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born Nov. 18, 1951, at Garden City, the son of Peter and Patricia (Gardner) Rome. He grew up in Garden City, attended St. Mary Catholic Grade School here, graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays in 1970 and then attended Garden City Community College.

Mr. Rome moved to California where he lived for about 12 years before returning to Kansas in the early 1980s. A farmer, he enjoyed the outdoors, camping and spending time in the mountains.

On Feb. 2, 1974, he married Sue Ann Pedigo at Garden City.

Survivors include a son, Shane Rome, Lawrence; two daughters, Charity Showalter and Kimberly Brown, both of Garden City; his mother, Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven brothers, Joe, Holcomb, Ron, Hays, Mark, Arizona, Patrick, El Paso, Texas, Tim, Garden City, Gary, Spring, Texas, and Paul, California; four sisters, Ann Jones, Bakersfield, Calif., Marilyn Vest, Muskogee, Okla., Teresa Rome, Colorado Springs, and Arlene Fontenot, Lakin; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary School, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Virginia Marie Flummerfelt

ULYSSES - Funeral for Virginia Marie Flummerfelt, 74, of Ulysses, will be 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Mrs. Flummerfelt died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

She was born Oct. 18, 1926, at Liberal, the daughter of Joseph Robert and Mabel E. (Wallstrom) Lyle. She graduated from Grant County Rural High School.

A lifetime resident of Ulysses, she worked as a receptionist for the Ulysses Medical Center for 28 years. She was a member of the PTA, Grant County Scholarship Board, Junior Civic and American Legion Auxiliary and was fund-raising chairman for the American Heart Association.

On Feb. 16, 1947, she married Albert Andrew "Buck" Flummerfelt at Ulysses. He died Sept. 10, 1984. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Roberta Lynn Flummerfelt, in 1969; and a brother, Harry William "Bill" Lyle.

She is survived by three sons, Andy, Hutchinson, Roger and Tommy, both of Ulysses; a daughter, Mary Jo Zerr, Ulysses; a brother, Charles Robert "Bob" Lyle, Sacramento, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the Grant County Museum, American Heart Association, American Lung Association or the donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Grady Grissom

SYRACUSE - Memorial service for Grady Grissom, 74, of Syracuse, will be 10 a.m. MDT Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Bob Goebel officiating. Preceding the service will be a flower card reading at 9:15 a.m. MDT at the church. The service will be followed by a graveside committal service in Syracuse Cemetery.

Mr. Grissom died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, from injuries suffered in an accident at Tamarisk Golf Course in Syracuse.

He was born Nov. 18, 1926, at Syracuse, the son of Clyde and Bernice (Eddy) Grissom. He graduated from Syracuse High School and attended Kansas State University.

A lifetime resident of Syracuse, he was a wheat farmer, raised cattle and did crop dusting before retiring in 1996. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, studying the Old West, playing cards, model airplanes, and collecting coins, guns and stamps and had many other interests.

He was on the board of Valley State Bank, was an elder of First Presbyterian Church of Syracuse and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a past Master for the Masonic Lodge, a former member of the Syracuse City Council and Hamilton County Commission, and had served in the U.S. Air Force.

He had previously been married for 32 years to Naomi (Miller) Grissom of Syracuse.

He is survived by a son, Mark Grissom, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Charlotte Grissom, Denver; two brothers, Patterson Grissom, Los Angeles, and Garth Grissom, Denver; a granddaughter; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Masonic Lodge or Tamarisk Golf Course, both in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home & Monuments, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.
