Earlene Vera "Babe" Black

SATANTA - Earlene Vera "Babe" Black, 83, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at the Satanta Long Term Care Unit, where she had been a resident.

She was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Stevens County, the daughter of Earl D. and Celestia M. (Brown) Davis.

A homemaker, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Santee Club, both at Satanta.

On March 7, 1936, she married Luciene C. Black at Beaver, Okla. He died Jan. 24, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Dixie Schonlaw; three brothers, Arthur, James and Raymond Davis; two sisters, Peggy McDonald and Ann Cobb; and an infant sister, Faye Ethel Davis.

Survivors include a son, Dennis L. Black, Satanta; a daughter, Jorja Poppe, Junction City; two brothers, Ben Davis and John Davis, both of Sublette; four sisters, Marie Anton, Satanta, Ruth Prutch and Lucille Ornelas, both of Pueblo, Colo., and Louise Itschner, Kerrville, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Jeff Miller officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Satanta Long Term Care Unit and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Pauline M. Heyman

ULYSSES - Pauline M. Heyman, 86, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

She was born Oct. 2, 1914, in Stafford County, the daughter of Albert and Bessie (Thomason) Dougan. She graduated from Grant County Rural High School in 1933.

A resident of Grant County since 1918, her first job was at Gray and Rosel. She was licensed to sell real estate and helped operate the Paul Heyman Agency.

Mrs. Heyman was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member and past worthy matron of Ulysses Eastern Star No. 471, past Rainbow Girl Mother Advisor, and belonged to the Chat & Stitch Club, Christian Women's Club and the Southwest Kansas Art Association, all at Ulysses. She was a past president of the Social Order of the Beauceant in Garden City, and was an accomplished artist and gardener.

On Aug. 12, 1934, she married Paul B. Heyman at the Dougan home in Grant County. He survives. She is also survived by two daughters, Josandra "Jo" Barnes, Lawrence, and Pam Loucks, Palo Alto, Calif.; a sister-in-law; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Orville Dougan.

Funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses.

Ethel Staats

Scott City - Funeral service for Ethel Staats will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Scott City. The Rev. Mike McGuire will officiate. Burial will be at Scott County Cemetery.

Memorial will be at United Methodist Church and Price & Sons Funeral Home. Visitation will be until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.

Ethel J. Staats, 85, Scott City, died at Scott County Hospital in Scott City on Friday, Aug. 24, 2001.

She was born on Dec. 24, 1915, in Oakley, the daughter of John Charles and Patience Hamilton Murphy. Upon graduation from Oakley High School in 1933, she had earned a second-grade county teacher's certificate. She later received a first-grade county teacher's certificate.

She taught in one-room schools for four years. Mrs. Staats also taught seven years in elementary schools in Monument and Brewster. She attended Fort Hays State College, and was granted a life certificate on May 25, 1944. In 1944, she was appointed by Logan County Commissioners to fill a vacancy as County Superintendent, and was later elected to the office in 1946.

Mrs. Staats was a member of the United Methodist Church and UMW in Scott City and Order of Eastern Star in Garden City.

On Jan. 19, 1948, she married Dean L. Staats in Colby. He died Aug. 18, 1994 in Scott City. She also is preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include a sister, Velma Scheopner of Goodland; and several nieces and nephews.

Sebastian Vela Pena

ULYSSES - An evening service for Sebastian Vela Pena, 76, will be 7 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Primera Asamblea De Dios, Ulysses, with the Rev. Manuel Perez officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Mr. Pena died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Jan. 20, 1925, at Crystal City, Texas, the son of Natividad DelRio and Elvira Ruiz (Vela) Pena.

A Ulysses resident since 1956, he had worked as a farmer, a school janitor, a mechanic for John Deere, as a construction worker and at Tuttle Feedlot. He enjoyed music, playing the guitar and harmonica, and playing dominoes at the Grant County Senior Center.

He married Sophia Ornelas. She died Jan. 1, 1976. He then married Alicia Avila. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Maria L. Perez; five brothers, Juan, Jesus, Pedro, Eulalio and Marcos; and a sister, Maria Pena.

Survivors include four sons, John Sebastian Pena, Beaver, Okla., Fernando Pena and Oscar Joe Pena, both of Caldwell, Idaho, and Hugo Pena, Pampa, Texas; two daughters, Maria Clea, Guerrero, Mexico, and Priscella Correa, Holcomb; a brother, Rodolfo Pena, Dallas; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials to the Sebastian Vela Pena Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Ross C. Teeter

Ross C. Teeter, 80, of Moscow, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born July 6, 1921, in rural Grant County, the son of John W. and Mary (Fields) Teeter. He graduated from Moscow High School in 1940.

On Dec. 14, 1941, he married Beryl Jones at Hugoton. They moved from rural Grant County to Moscow in 1945.

Mr. Teeter was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and served on many boards and committees at the church. He also belonged to Masonic Lodge No. 406 at Hugoton, Midian Shrine at Wichita and the Wichita Consistory, and was a 32nd degree Mason.

He served on the school board of USD 209 for several years in Moscow, served as a board member of the Stevens County Hospital and Pioneer Manor at Hugoton, was a board member for 12 years for the Soil Conservation at Hugoton, and was a deputy for the Stevens County Sheriff Department for several years. He enjoyed supporting the community and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jim Teeter, Canon City, Colo.; two daughters, Shirley Mothes, Moscow, and Sheri Scarafiotti, Scottsdale, Ariz.; a brother, Melvin Teeter, Ulysses; three sisters, Dorothy Nichols, Flagler, Colo., Doris Dye, Rolla, and Margaret Parks, Eureka; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Henry and Harry Teeter; and a twin brother, Ralph Teeter.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Moscow, with the Rev. Bill Ripley officiating. Burial will be in Moscow Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the church, the Boy Scouts-Santa Fe Trail Council or the American Cancer Fund, all in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

DeDe DeWitt

HUGOTON - Funeral for DeDe DeWitt, 59, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Mrs. DeWitt died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

She was born May 18, 1942, at Commerce, Okla., the daughter of Homer and Heneretta (Rakes) Eidson.

A Hugoton resident since 1960, moving from Wyandotte, Okla., she was a manager for Dart-In from 1978 to 1999 and was a secretary for the Stevens County Sheriff Office. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Hugoton. She enjoyed making crafts and giving them to her family and friends.

On Dec. 15, 1976, she married Russ E. DeWitt at Hugoton. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Craig Mantzke, Hugoton, and Jim DeWitt, Colorado; a daughter, Keeley DeWitt, Hugoton; a brother, John Eidson, Oklahoma City; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.
