James Thomas McNeal
LAKIN - Graveside service for James Thomas McNeal, 73, of Perryville, Ark., and formerly of Lakin, will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Nimrod (Ark.) Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Hairston officiating.
Mr. McNeal died Friday, Aug. 16, 2001, at Chambers Memorial Hospital in Danville, Ark.
He was born Dec. 24, 1927, at Nimrod, the son of Roy and Joyce (Cowger) McNeal.
Mr. McNeal was a retired truck driver and farmer. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Lee McNeal; two sons, David Roy McNeal, Nimrod, and James Albert McNeal, Conway, Ark.; a daughter, Paula Jean Barnes, North Little Rock, Ark.; four brothers, Bill, Little Rock, Ark., Don and Robert, both of Nimrod, and George McNeal, Cherry Hill, Ark.; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline Moritz McNeal.
Cornwell Funeral Home, Danville, is in charge of arrangements.
Merle Orin Bird
Merle Orin Bird, 87, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Dec. 19, 1913, at Meade, the son of Elwood D. and Edna (Smiley) Bird.
A Garden City resident since 1975, moving from Colorado Springs, Colo., he was a retired farmer, insurance salesman and general contractor.
Mr. Bird had served as a county commissioner of Crowley, Colo., was a lifetime member of B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge, and belonged to the First United Methodist Church Membership Care Committee.
On July 31, 1976, he married Helen Dreith at Colorado Springs. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Leonard Lee Bird, Federal Way, Wash., and William "Bill" Bird, Lakin; a daughter, Jackie M. Jenkins, Renton, Wash.; a stepson, John Kahler, Colorado Springs; a stepdaughter, Janet McLarty, Double Oak, Texas; a sister, Hazel Pearson, Rolla, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Norman Lewis Bird; three brothers, Elwood, Harold and Norman "Bill"; and three sisters, Marguerite Selders, Helen Strever and Pauline Bird.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Sharon Clare
HOLCOMB - Sharon Clare, 53, of Holcomb, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born Oct. 11, 1947, at Garden City, the daughter of Thomas T. and Shireen "Sherry" (Beal) Clare.
A lifetime resident of Holcomb, she attended Holcomb schools, graduated from Holcomb High School in 1966 and attended Garden City Community College.
Miss Clare had worked as a clerk for Oswalt Manufacturing, Sears, Dillons and USD No. 457. She enjoyed crafts, cooking and making candy.
Survivors include her mother, Holcomb; two brothers, Thomas David Clare and Gregory Allen Clare, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. David Sweley officiating.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Marlene Calhoun
ULYSSES - Marlene Calhoun, 52, of Ulysses, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Dec. 21, 1948, at Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Owen C. and Alene (Gregory) Steen.
A lifetime resident of Ulysses, she was a homemaker, and had worked as a waitress and manager of several supper clubs. She was a board member of the Grant County Historical Society for more than 20 years, was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses, and enjoyed quilting, antiques and her cats.
On Oct. 26, 1974, she married Don Calhoun at Coal Creek Canyon, Colo. He survives. She is also survived by a son, William Earl Calhoun, Bozeman, Mont.; and a daughter, Ramona.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton and the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to Grant County Museum, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.
Doris Marie Gray
Doris Marie Gray, 79, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born June 26, 1922, in the Plymell community in Finney County, the daughter of Elmer A. and Hattie (Thomas) Stone. She attended English Hill and Quivera grade schools, and graduated from Garden City High School and Garden City Community College.
On Oct. 10, 1948, she married Robert F. Gray at Garden City. He died March 12, 1974. She was also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, F. Arthur Stone, Cleo L. Stone and W. Faye Stone.
Mrs. Gray was employed as a bookkeeper and stenographer at Fidelity State Bank for 35 years. After her retirement she was active in volunteer programs. She was an honorary member of the board of directors of Jeanne B. Corley Hospice, a receptionist at St. Catherine Hospital and delivered Meals on Wheels.
She was a member of First Christian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Finney County Historical Society and the Senior Center of Finney County and a former member of the Garden City Business and Professional Women.
Survivors include four nephews, four nieces and numerous other relatives.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Finney County Historical Society or First Christian Church, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Dorothy Ann "Pat" Alexander
Dorothy Ann "Pat" Alexander, 75, of Harvard, Neb., died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Colorado Springs, Colo.
She was born Aug. 2, 1926, at Spalding, Neb., the daughter of James and Albertina (Wlaschin) Patterson, the youngest of nine children.
Mrs. Alexander was a homemaker and a seamstress.
On July 24, 1964, she married Robert "Bob" Alexander. He died June 10, 2001. She was also preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Norvell and Dory Richardson, both of Colorado Springs, and Ronda Jaeger, Oak, Neb.; two sons, Timothy J. Alexander, Garden City, and Robert Alexander, Hastings, Neb.; two sisters, Marg Brady and Virginia Wood; a brother, Jimmy Patterson; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Harvard, with the Rev. Bernard Lorenz officiating. Burial will be in Harvard Cemetery.

Edith Ellen Kingsford Ray
Funeral for Edith Ellen Kingsford Ray, 86, was 10 a.m. Saturday at Martin Funeral Home Chapel, Elk City, Okla., with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating. Burial followed in Fairlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Ray died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at the United Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton, Okla., where she had been a resident for three years.
She was born Dec. 22, 1914, at Carter, Okla., the daughter of Markley Wesley and Katheryn Lucinda (Breeze) Ford.
On Nov. 18, 1933, she married Leon Kingsford at Carter. He died Jan. 8, 1990. On May 8, 1992, she married Dee Ray. He died Aug. 15, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and five sisters.
A homemaker, she also worked at Seay's Drug Store for many years. Her greatest joy in later years was her volunteer work at the Thrift Store in Elk City. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Elk City.
She is survived by her children, Hobba Masoner, Garden City, and Kermit Kingsford, Elk City; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
