Hilda R. Penka

Larned - Hilda R. Penka, 89, of Larned died Aug. 31 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus, Great Bend.

She was born Dec.12, 1911 in Barton County, the daughter of John and Louisa (Beran) Boor. A lifetime resident of Pawnee County, she was a homemaker.

On Oct. 25, 1933, she married Peter (Pete) Frank Penka. He died Jan. 3, 1981. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, honorary member of the Sacred Heart Altar Society, Zook EHU and was a grandma volunteer to the first grade class at Sacred Heart School.

Survivors include five sons, Vernon, Kansas City; Larry, Ingalls; Roy, Belpre; Allen, Dodge City; Gerald, Norwood, Mass.; six daughters, Kathy Bowman, Mary Ann Tammen, both of Larned; Betty White, Excelsior Spring, Mo.; Patricia Klamm, Kansas City; Joyce Sims, Colorado Springs, Colo. and Connie Mauney, Pawnee Rock.

She is also survived by a brother John Boor, five sisters, Alice Schneweis, Loretta Weiser, Teresa Weiser, Cecilia Gerstenkorn, Eleanor Klug; 32 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a granndchild, Gary Lee, four brothers and six sisters.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with The Rev. Dennis Reed presiding. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned. Burial will be in the Belpre Cemetary, Belpre, Kan.

Memorials may be sent to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the Pawnee County 4-H Foundation, both in care of Beckwith Mortuary Inc., P.O. Box 477, Larned, Kan. 67550.

Jerry J. Spradling

LEOTI - Jerry J. Spradling, 59, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Wichita County Long Term Care Unit in Leoti.

He was born Nov. 10, 1941, at South Haven, the son of Orville B. and Bertha M. (Charter) Spradling.

A farmer and stockman, Mr. Spradling was a lifetime resident of Wichita County. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Leoti, Anthem Masonic Lodge No. 284 at Scott City, a charter member of Leoti Country Club and a former city councilman.

On Nov. 11, 1961, he married Beverly Tucker at Plainville. He married Jeanne Speer on Jan. 8, 1984, at Leoti. She survives. Other survivors are three sons, Vince Spradling, South Bend, Ind., Scott Spradling, Leoti, and Jeremy Rodrock, Baldwin City; two daughters, Traci Tankersley and Cheri Ochsner, both of Leoti; his mother, Leoti; a brother, David Spradling, Bentonville, Ark.; three grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Spradling.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Rick Just officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti, and until service time Friday. Memorials are suggested to the Wichita County Long Term Care Unit or the United Methodist Church, both in care of the funeral home.

Molly M. Fullerton

LEOTI - Molly M. Fullerton, 92, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Wichita County Long Term Care Unit in Leoti.

She was born Nov. 16, 1908, at Fort Worth, Texas, the daughter of Joe M. and Tennessee O. (Harden) McKelvy.

A Leoti resident since 1960, she was Leoti city clerk from 1967 until retiring in 1985. She was a member of Church of Christ at Elkhart and Order of Eastern Star No. 323 at Leoti.

On July 4, 1936, she married Troy Fullerton at Chickasha, Okla. He died Oct. 20, 1957, at Lamar, Colo.

Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti, with the Rev. Rick Just officiating. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday in Elkhart Cemetery, with the Rev. Shane Hanes officiating.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and until service time Monday. Memorials are suggested to the Wichita County Long Term Care Unit, in care of the funeral home.

Brandon Lee Shaw

SUBLETTE - Brandon Lee Shaw, 21, of Sublette, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, en route to Wichita.

The son of Darrel W. and Catherine Lee (Curry) Shaw, he was born Oct. 25, 1980, at Beaumont, Texas, where he lived for 10 years. The family moved from Artesia, N.M., to Sublette in 1998.

A 2000 graduate of Sublette High School, he enjoyed football, basketball, baseball, watching movies on television and fishing.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Nicholle Raeanne Palomares (Shaw), Satanta; a brother, Jared Wayne Shaw, Sublette; his grandparents, Robert and Betty Curry, Beaumont, and Leon and Helen Shaw, Winnie, Texas; and a nephew.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Christian Church, Sublette, with the Rev. David Erwin officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette.

Jim B. Bryant

ENSIGN - Funeral for Jim B. Bryant, 65, of Ensign, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Church of Christ, Dodge City, with Garrell Kidd officiating. Burial will be in Ensign Cemetery.

Mr. Bryant died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

He was born Sept. 11, 1936, at Pocahontas, Ark., the son of Verlon O. and Ova M. (Newberry) Bryant. He graduated from Ensign High School.

Mr. Bryant had worked at Gray County Feed Yard for 25 years as a yard foreman. A farmer and rancher, he enjoyed working with horses and cattle, liked fishing and hunting, loved calf roping and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a former member of the Ensign Board of Education and a former city councilman at Ensign.

On Nov. 29, 1958, he married Kae Reinert at Dodge City. She survives. He is also survived by his mother, Dodge City; two sons, Gary and Rodney Bryant, both of Ensign; a brother, Duane Bryant, Eureka; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Bryant; and his father.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.

Frank H. Bongartz

Frank H. Bongartz, 91, of Ellis, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at the Ellis Good Samaritan Center.

He was born Nov. 21, 1909, in Trego County, the son of Frank Sr. and Christina (Lutz) Bongartz.

A longtime farmer and stockman in Trego County, he moved to Sublette in 1974 and worked at the high school before returning to Ellis in 1997.

Mr. Bongartz was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's Catholic Church, both at Ellis.

On Aug. 11, 1936, he married Cecelia Jacobs at Ellis. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Raymond Bongartz, Ogallah, and David Bongartz, Bay City, Texas; six daughters, Janette Shantz, Wichita, Joanne Mays and Kandice Michel, both of Garden City, Norma Offutt and Lynda Wallace, both of Houston, and Susan Ketchum, McCamey, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, James F. and Gary A. Bongartz; two brothers, William and Joe Bongartz; and four sisters, Christina Crawford, Anna Kuppetz, Helen Massier and Mary Riedel.

A prayer service is planned for 7 p.m. Thursday at Wasinger Funeral Chapel, Ellis. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Ellis, with the Rev. Kevin Weber officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Church Cemetery, Ellis.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.

Virgil Meyer

Vigil service for Virgil Meyer, 89, will be 8 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. James Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Mr. Meyer died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

He was born May 15, 1912, in Finney County, the son of Fred W. and Amelia (Hassebrock) Meyer. A lifetime resident of Finney County and Garden City, he attended country schools in Finney County.

After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945, he returned to Garden City. He was self-employed for many years before working at Lightner Welding Supply for 15 years, retiring in 1980.

Mr. Meyer was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a third degree member of Knights of Columbus and a lifetime member of the VFW. He enjoyed yard work and gardening.

On Dec. 31, 1946, he married Beulah E. Gerber at Garden City. She died March 26, 1999. He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Arthur, Walter and Harold Meyer; and two sisters, Margaret Meyer and Mary Meyer.

He is survived by two sons, Robert Meyer, Garden City, and Ronald Meyer, Houston; two daughters, Mary Ann Johnson, Garden City, and Debra Blade, St. John, Mich.; a sister, Mabel Bauer, Ottawa; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation hours are until 6:30 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Garden Valley Retirement Village or St. Mary School Endowment Fund, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
