Joseph J. Plett

Joseph J. Plett, 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at Rosemont Assisted Living Center in Houston.

He was born Nov. 9, 1919, at Lehigh, the son of the Rev. Jacob E. and Mary (Heinrichs) Plett.

Before moving to Houston in June, he had lived in Garden City since 1948, moving from Marion.

A farmer, he served on the boards of directors of many groups including the FHA, the Golden Plains Credit Union and Credit Committee, the Federal Land Bank Board for 17 years, and the Jennie Barker School Board.

Mr. Plett was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Garden City.

He taught Sunday School and served as a deacon for 30 years with First Baptist Church of Garden City.

On Sept. 6, 1945, he married Anna Loepp at Inman.

She survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Marilyn Jean Plett, Houston, and Janeth Dow, Prescott, Ariz.; and three grandsons.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Tom Rishel officiating.

Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or St. Catherine Hospice, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Lois J. Jenkins

Funeral for Lois J. Jenkins, 81, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Presbyterian Church, Carroll, Neb., with the Rev. Gail Axen officiating.

Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery.

Miss Jenkins died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

Born July 7, 1920, at Carroll, she was the daughter of Lawrence E. and Fern D. (Davis) Jenkins.

She grew up in Carroll and attended schools there, graduating from Carroll High School.

She moved to Norfolk, Neb., in 1962 and to Garden City in 1986.

She worked for the Nebraska Department of Rehabilitation for 19 years.

Miss Jenkins was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Garden City and belonged to Bethany Presbyterian Church while living in Carroll.

She enjoyed fancy work.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Adah Jenkins, Garden City; three nephews, David Jenkins, Clarmont, Fla., John Jenkins, Shawnee, and Larry Jenkins, Garden City; and a great-nephew, Ryan Jenkins, Shawnee.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Edward Jenkins.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials are suggested to the Presbyterian Church in Garden City or Bethany Presbyterian Church in Carroll, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

John D. Carl Sr.

John D. Carl Sr., 74, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Hillcrest Specialty Hospital in Tulsa, Okla.

He was born May 15, 1927, in Lane County, the son of Plumb D. and Lena Pearl (Miller) Carl.

He attended Westlake Grade School in Lane County, Dighton High School and Salt City College in Hutchinson.

Mr. Carl served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

After the service, he returned to the farm in Lane County where he worked as a farmer and stockman.

A longtime resident of Lane County, he had recently moved to Johnson City.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and VFW, both at Garden City.

On Dec. 27, 1971, he married Udine Browning at Garden City. She died June 4, 1995.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and a son, Timothy Carl.

On Dec. 14, 1999, he married Thelma Barry at Garden City. She survives.

He is also survived by a son, John David Carl Jr., Great Bend; three daughters, Vivian Pearl Lane, Paris, Ark., Kathi Louise Majernik, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Marjorie Jo Dodd, Oakley; two stepsons, Virgil Browning, Jay, Okla., and Roy Lee Browning, Garden City; two sisters, Martha Ann Countryman, Lincoln, Neb., and Mary Susan Blume, Satanta; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. John Zoschke officiating.

Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Peggy Donita Thompson

She was born Feb. 23, 1954, at Burlington, Colo., the daughter of Francis Duane and Orma Darlene (Turner) Warren.

After graduating from Burlington High School in 1972, she lived in Limon, Colorado Springs, Loveland and Wiley, Colo.

She moved to Syracuse in 1988 and then lived in Felt, Okla., for a short time before returning to Syracuse.

Mrs. Thompson had worked at Valley State Bank in Syracuse and served as the Hamilton County Deputy Clerk from 1989 to 1999.

She also had worked at Felt Feedlot in Oklahoma and for KLMR radio station in Lamar, Colo.

She enjoyed attending her children's activities and being a schoolroom mother.

Her hobbies included crocheting, making quilts, collecting chicken memorabilia and reading.

On Sept. 18, 1987, she married Alton "Mort" Thompson at Lamar.

He survives.

She is also survived by a daughter, Kelsey Rae Thompson, and two stepsons, Nicholas Ryan Thompson and Andrew Jackson Thompson, all of Syracuse; her father and mother, both of Burlington; a sister, Marquema Jolene "Kim" Warren, Stratton, Colo.; a brother, Michael Duane Warren, Burlington; several nieces and nephews; and two great-nieces.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Bill Fitzgerrel officiating.

Graveside committal service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.

Visitation hours are until 8 MDT tonight and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. MDT Friday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse.

Memorials are suggested to the Kelsey Rae Thompson Educational Fund or the Syracuse Christmas Candy Fund, both in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.

Joyce N. Butler

FRIEND - Funeral Mass for Joyce N. Butler, 43, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.

Mrs. Butler died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at her home in Friend.

She was born April 22, 1958, at Garden City, the daughter of Laurence and Margaret (Roepka) Hahn.

A homemaker, she had been a lifetime Finney County resident.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City.

On Dec. 27, 1996, she married Brett Butler at Friend.

He survives.

She is also survived by four sons, Adam DaSilva, Salina, Chris Butler, T.A. Butler and Garrison Cobb, all of the home; three daughters, Kristin DaSilva, Holcomb, Amber Butler, of the home, and Angie Nelson, Garden City; her mother, Garden City; a brother, Leonard Hahn, Friend; five sisters, Mary Predmore, Sun Valley, Nev., Elaine Gross, Salina, Anita Coates, Garden City, Rose Dixon and Louise Turner, both of Friend; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and three brothers, Steve, Marion and Norbert Hahn.

Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City.

Memorials to the Joyce N. Butler Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Lorene F. DeCoudres

Lorene F. DeCoudres, 75, of Larned, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus, Larned.

She was born Sept. 30, 1926, at Milford, Mo., the daughter of Donald Madison and Carrie Edna (Doyl) Thompson.

A Larned resident since 1951, she was a homemaker and belonged to Church of the Nazarene.

On Feb. 14, 1946, she married Carl P. DeCoudres at Fort Scott.

He survives.

She is also survived by two sons, Charles Wayne, Kansas City, Mo., and Rickie Eugene, Larned; four daughters, Carol F. Hall, Ellsworth, Dian Bartlett, Louisville, Ill., Terrie Smith, Larned, and Mary Jane Bridges, Garden City; a brother, Frank Thompson; two sisters, Ruby DeCoudres, Fort Scott, and Bernice Thompson, Hot Springs, Ark.; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Carl and Leroy; a daughter, Edna Marie; three brothers; one sister; and one grandson.

Funeral will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Morell Funeral Home, Larned, with the Rev. Rick Clark officiating.

Burial will be in Larned Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home, Box 124, Larned, KS 67550.
