Norman Lewis Green

Graveside service for Norman Lewis Green, 67, of Ellis, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in Brownell Cemetery, 1 1/2 miles west and 1 mile south of Brownell, with the Rev. Lyle M. Knuth officiating. A luncheon is to follow at the American Legion in Brownell.

Mr. Green died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at his home in Ellis.

He was born Oct. 24, 1934, in Ness County, the son of Lewis and Mildred (Sunley) Green.

A resident of Ellis for 1 1/2 years, moving from Brownell, he had been manager of Brownell Grain Co. for 18 years. After retiring he owned and operated the Dis-n-Dat Shop in Brownell until moving to Ellis in June 2000.

Mr. Green was a member and former commander of American Legion Post No. 382 of Brownell, with 46 years of membership. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

On Aug. 2, 1965, he married Phyllis Stegman at LaCrosse. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Norman Green Jr., Bradshaw, Neb.; three stepsons, Richard Davis, Brownell, Leslie Davis, Scott City, and Leonard "Sam" Davis, Clearwater; two grandsons; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; his parents, Healy; three sisters, Barbara Davis, Healy, Marge Horlick, Overland Park, and Louella Gray, Jonesboro, Ark.; and a brother, Bill Green, Garden City. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Randy Davis.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or American Lung Association, both in care of Wasinger Funeral Chapel, Ellis.

Virginia Ann Tracy

SYRACUSE - Rosary and vigil service for Virginia Ann Tracy, 84, will be 7 p.m. MST Friday at St. Raphael Catholic Church, Syracuse. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. MST Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms as celebrant. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery, followed by a dinner for the family at the church.

Mrs. Tracy died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at her home near Syracuse.

She was born April 27, 1917, five miles north of Bellfont in Hodgeman County, the daughter of William Henry and Clara Mary (Benish) Tenbrink. In 1926, the family moved to Ford County, 2 1/2 miles north of Howell. She attended Howell Grade School.

After graduating from high school in 1935 at St. Mary of the Plains Girls Academy in Dodge City, she attended Schwartz Beauty School in Dodge City. She first worked in the beauty industry in Meade and then in Garden City.

In 1940 she moved to Anthony, where she met John Tracy who was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941. He graduated from officers training school in 1943. They were married Jan. 14, 1943, at Anthony. He served 2 1/2 years overseas in the Army before returning from the war in December 1945.

They moved to Syracuse in 1946 and then to a farm 4 1/2 miles west of Syracuse in 1952, where they farmed, ranched and raised registered quarter horses. Mrs. Tracy also worked at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse as a nurse's aide.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church, Altar Society and Syracuse Garden Club, and had been a 4-H leader. She enjoyed playing bridge, oil painting, ceramics, gardening, flowers, cooking bread and pies, and making homemade butter and ice cream.

Her husband died Sept. 25, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Everett William Tenbrink.

Survivors include five sons, John E. Tracy Jr., Hooker, Okla., Dr. Michael Tracy, Upland, Calif., Timothy Tracy and Patrick Tracy, both of Syracuse, and William Tracy, Nuevo, Calif.; two sisters, Wilma Agnes Hessman and Esther Mary Bogner, both of Dodge City; a sister-in-law, Betty Tenbrink, Stillwater, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours are until 8 MST tonight and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST Friday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to St. Raphael Catholic Church's New Parish Hall, in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.

Patricia Lynne John

Patricia Lynne John, 53, of Garden City, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

She was born Nov. 28, 1947, at Garden City, the daughter of Kenneth and Betty (Conaway) Collins.

A lifetime Garden City resident, she was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist faith.

On Aug. 18, 1966, she married Jerry John at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by two daughters, Kimberly Nading and Kristi John, both of Garden City; her mother, Garden City; two sisters, Kennette Guerrero and Jennifer Gribble, both of Garden City; a brother, Wayne Collins, Gorham; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for a later date. Inurnment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Garden City Special Olympics Organization, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

James Calvin "Jim" Maxey

SYRACUSE - James Calvin "Jim" Maxey, 77, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in Syracuse.

He was born Feb. 7, 1924, at Gayville, S.D., the son of James Calvin Sr. and Betty (McGuire) Maxey. The family moved to Syracuse in 1929.

Mr. Maxey joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1941 to 1947 in the South Pacific from the Aleutian Islands to Australia. He received his high school diploma in 2000 from USD No. 494 in Syracuse as a part of an honors program the United States bestows on those individuals who chose to serve their country during time of war rather than finishing school.

He had worked as an over-the-road trucker for himself and others, including Wright Motor Lines, Bray Lines out of Cushing, Okla., Hill and Hill, Belger, Graves and Maxey Motor Lines. For the last 15 years he hauled and set tanks for Palmer Manufacturing of Garden City before retiring in 1994. He enjoyed collecting ink pens, hats and caps, fishing and attending auctions, and was an avid reader and a history buff.

On Jan. 19, 1952, he married Elsie Emily Hoyt at Syracuse. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Caprice Ann Thompson, Lawrence, and Christa Leigh McKinney, Garden City; a son, James Kyle Maxey, LaQuinta, Calif.; two brothers, Wayne Maxey, Phoenix, and Bill Maxey, Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Betty Jane Schonlaw, Golden, Colo., and Joan Cumbie, Pueblo, Colo.; a brother-in-law, Dale Hoyt, Syracuse; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two granddaughters, Asia and Stephanie McKinney; a sister, Mavis Hoyt; and two brothers, Donald and John Maxey.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. MST Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, Syracuse, with the Revs. David Sweley and Bob Goebel officiating. Graveside committal service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.

Visitation hours are until 8 MST tonight and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. MST Thursday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. The family will meet privately at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday for a flower card reading. Memorials are suggested to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.

Kenneth Paul White

SYRACUSE - Graveside service for Kenneth Paul White, 91, of Kingsdown, will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Bucklin Cemetery, Bucklin. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Kingsdown Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Orlando Jantz will officiate.

Mr. White died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Minneola Nursing Home.

He was born May 4, 1910, at Kingsdown, the son of David and Sadie B. (Doles) White. In 1927, he was a member of the third graduating class of Kingsdown High School. He later graduated from Kansas State University.

A lifetime resident of Kingsdown, he was a farmer. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Kingsdown and had served as an elder for many years. He was also a commissioner of the Presbyterian General Assembly in 1975 which was in San Diego.

Mr. White had served on the Bloom-Kingsdown Co-op Board and as a trustee of the Bucklin Hospital District, was a founding member of Bloom Credit Union, was involved in Scouting where he taught the "God and Country Award," and was a member of the Flying Farmers of Kansas and the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association.

On May 4, 1935, he married Avis Marie Ward at Manhattan. She died Oct. 8, 1997. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Floyd, Carl and Hugh; and two sisters, Edith Metzler and Irene Cohrs.

Survivors include five sons, Paul Ward, Syracuse, Lee B., Poway, Calif., Roy D., Red Oak, Texas, Hal N., Kingsdown, and John M., Kearns, Utah; a sister, Clara Rotz, Seattle; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 7 tonight at Minnis Mortuary, Bucklin. Memorials are suggested to Kingsdown Presbyterian Church or Minneola Nursing Home's Van Fund, both in care of the mortuary, Box 516, Bucklin, KS 67834.

Maria A. Navarrette

ULYSSES - Maria A. Navarrette, 68, Garden City and formerly of Ulysses, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.

Mrs. Navarrette was born Sept. 23, 1933, at San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Felix and Ricarda (Rodriguez) Acuna.

She married Jimmie Navarrette were married Jan. 15, 1950, at San Antonio. They moved to Ulysses in 1973. They celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in January.

Mrs. Navarrette was a homemaker. She loved her husband, children and grandchildren and enjoyed being with them.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmie Navarrette, Garden City; six sons, Jimmie Navarrette, Indianapolis, Ind., Gilbert Navarrette, San Antonio, Bobby Ray Navarrette, Pratt, Richard C. Navarrette, Michael A. Navarrette, and Jamie Gutierrez, all of Ulysses; one daughter, Margaret Ann Barbarbosa, San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Robert Acuna, Kansas City, Mo., Ramiro Acuna, Houston, Texas; two sisters, Frances Aleman, San Antonio, and Margie Vidaurri, Garden City; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceeded in death by her parents; a daughter, Mary Navarrette; a sister, Carmen Guerrero.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Assembly of God Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Mike Holman presiding. Burial will be at the Ulysses Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established for either the Dialysis Foundation or the Diabetes Association. Memorials may be mailed to Grant County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses, is in charge of arrangements.
