Marvin Ray McKinney

Johnson CITY - Funeral for Marvin Ray McKinney, 70, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Johnson City, with the Revs. Glenn Fogo and Kevin Seuser officiating. Masonic graveside rites and burial will follow in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.

Mr. McKinney died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Stanton County Hospital in Johnson City

He was born Feb. 9, 1931, at Liberal, the son of Marlin and Georgia D. (Stapleton) McKinney. He graduated from Johnson City School and attended Southwestern College at Winfield.

A farmer and rancher, he began farming with his father in 1943. After 1950, he farmed his own ground. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Johnson Masonic Lodge No. 441 and Sons of The American Revolution of New Mexico, was a former Cub Master and Assistant Scout Master, and was a private pilot.

On Aug. 6, 1950, he married Oreta A. Newby at Mount Hope. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Brad McKinney, Manter; a daughter, Tamara Smith, Hasty, Colo..; his mother, Johnson City; two sisters, Wanda Lee Dorsey, Anchorage, Alaska, and Ila June Ellis, Wamautter, Wyo.; three grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; a son, Mark McKinney; and a granddaughter, Asia McKinney.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Boy Scout Troop 145, Stanton County Hospital or the donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.

Frances L. Matteson

Funeral for Frances L. Matteson, 73, of Phillipsburg, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Phillipsburg, with the Rev. Ron Lowry officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Mrs. Matteson died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg.

She was born Dec. 1, 1927, in Phillips County, the daughter of Karl L. and Jane (Gordon) King.

A lifetime resident of Phillips County, she was a homemaker. She belonged to the United Methodist Church, Myers-Hesler VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 1360 and the Domestic Science Club, all in Phillipsburg.

On June 12, 1948, she married Roscoe R. Matteson in rural Kensington. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Ronald Matteson, rural Phillipsburg; two daughters, Jan Krug, Garden City, and Doris Rauhut, Wamego; a brother, Gordon King, Council Grove; two sisters, Janice Williams, Tulsa, Okla., and Loree Province, Salina; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Duane Rauhut.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, and until service time Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or Phillips County Hospital, both in care of the memorial chapel.

Cheri Mychel Rigoulot Kernes

TWIN FALLS, Idaho - Cheri Mychel Rigoulot Kernes, 50, of Twin Falls, died Nov. 11, 2001, at the University of Utah Medical Center of complications following open heart surgery.

She was born Feb. 10, 1951, at Idaho Falls, to John Marcel Rigoulot and Vivian Elaine (Labrum) Rigoulot. She grew up in Idaho Falls and Rigby. She attended Clair E. Gale Junior High, Rigby Junior High and graduated from Rigby High School. She received a Fine Arts degree from Northwest Oklahoma State. ÀShe married Sheldon Lee Kernes Oct. 22, 1968, at Idaho Falls. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on April 13, 1971.

She has been a homemaker, mother, artist and substitute teacher. À

An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in numerous callings over the years, including Young Women's President and in the Primary. She loved camping with the Young Women. She was a professional artist and loved it and her family. She enjoyed genealogy, art, sculpture and animals, especially her dogs. À

Survivors include: her husband, Sheldon Kernes, Twin Falls and formerly of the Garden City, Kan., area; a daughter, Kelly Lynn Woodruff, Idaho Falls; three sons, Joel Lee Kernes, Filer, Terry Dean Kernes and Lee Charles Chuck Kernes, both of Twin Falls; a brother, John Marcel Rigoulot, Jr., Rigby; two sisters, Marcella Hill, Irwin, and Marie Castro, Idaho Falls; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Wood Chapel of the Pines, with Bishop Robert Schroeder of the Twin Falls LDS 4th Ward officiating. Burial will be in Ririe-Shelton Cemetery

The family will visit with friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and for one hour prior to the services on Friday, both at Wood Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Cheri Kernes Memorial Fund, c/o Wood Funeral Home, 273 North Ridge Avenue, Idaho Falls, ID 83402-4092.

DeVirda Houston Burcham Jr.

ULYSSES - DeVirda Houston Burcham Jr., 86, Wichita and former longtime resident of Ulysses, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

Mr. Burcham was born Dec. 12, 1914, at Kansas City, Mo., the son of DeVirda H. Burcham Sr. and Sara Elizabeth (Calhoun) Burcham.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a military officer during World War II. Mr. Burcham was retired from Burroughs Corp., as a banking expert. He was a member of the Missouri Bar Association for more than 50 years. He enjoyed golfing "until the sun drove him off the course," was a grand master bridge player and belonged to several bowling leagues in earlier years.

On Nov. 12, 1937, he married Margaret Gloria Coffey at Kansas City, Mo. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include: two sons, DeVirda H. Burcham III, Lexington, Md., and William R. Burcham, Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Ann Margo Russell, Wichita; a brother, James Burcham, Brownsville, Texas; two sisters, Maxine Van Wynn, Jacksonville, Fla., and Thelma Lickovich, Overland Park; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Edith, Doris, Ruth and Bernice.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold presiding. Inurnment with military graveside rites will follow in the Ulysses Cemetery.

The family requests memorials be given to the donors choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Bobby Dale Broyles

Johnson - Bobby Dale Broyles, 52, Plano, Texas and formerly of Johnson, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at Plano.

Mr. Broyles was born Dec. 2, 1948, at Elkhart, the son of M. Duane and Betty J. (Carrithers) Broyles.

He had worked for Digatal Equipment Corp., doing computer service. He was a member of the HAM Radio Club, Radio Control Model Airplane Club and the First Baptist Church in The Colony, Colony, Texas. He enjoyed purchasing and maintiaining the church computers, and helping with the maintanance on automobiles of single and widowed church members.

On Nov. 5, 1966, he married Margaret Louise Haney at Pueblo, Colo. She survives.

Other survivors include: his parents, Duane and Betty Broyles, Los Lunas, N.M.; two daughters, Rebecka Wilson, Ulysses, and Kay Davis, Plano; two brothers, Gary Broyles, Pueblo, and Denton Broyles, Los Lunas; and five grandhcildren. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson, with Rev. Dave Kaufmann presiding. Burial will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time at Fields Memorial Weslyan Church. Family requests memorials be given to the Bobby Dale Broyles memorial fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Box 715, Johnson, KS 67855.

Paul C. Scheer

Paul C. Scheer, 82, Garden City, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.

Mr. Scheer was born Nov. 17, 1918, in Finney County, the son of Andrew and Anna (Drussel) Scheer.

Born in Finney County, Paul has been a lifetime Finney County and Garden City resident. He attended a one-room school house on Annie Scheer Road. He later attended and graduated from Garden City High School and Garden City Junior College.

He married Daisy L. Dotts on June 20, 1943, at the First Assembly of God Church in Garden City.

A farmer and stockman, Paul also owned and operated Paul Scheer Repair on West Highway 50. He also loved nature.

Mr. Scheer was a member of First Assembly of God Church, where he served as a deacon and soloist; Gideons International; and was presented a lifetime membership to the Garden City P.T.A. He was past president of the Jones School P.T.A. and served as a state judge for F.F.A. events.

Survivors include: His wife, Daisy L. Scheer, of the home; two sons, Rod P. Scheer, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Randy P. Scheer, Springfield, Mo.; three daughters, Judy Scheer Ginther, Bethlehem, Pa., Paula Scheer Baker, Garden City, and Mary Lou White, Marienthal; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Ray Holman officiating. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday. The family will be at Garnand Funeral Home from 6 to 8 tonight to visit with friends.

Memorials may be given to Gideons International in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Eugene Scheer; and three sisters, Lelia Brown, Helen Moody and Katherine Wilson.
