Glenn Willard Lake

TRIBUNE - Funeral for Glenn Willard Lake, 84, of Buffalo, Okla., was to be 2 p.m. today at First Christian Church, Buffalo, with the Rev. Rod Reiger officiating. Burial was to be in Highpoint Cemetery, Buffalo.

Mr. Lake died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Harper County Community Hospital in Buffalo.

He was born Nov. 13, 1916, north of the Selman community in Harper County, the son of Willard Wesley and Virginia Mae (Young) Lake. He attended New Hope Country School in the Selman area.

A farmer/rancher, he had been employed by the Oklahoma State Department of Transportation Division 6, retiring May 31, 1986. He was a member of First Christian Church where he was baptized in 1935, belonged to the Odd Fellow Lodge of Buffalo, and served on the Selman School Board.

On Aug. 10, 1940, he married Delilah Jane Miller at Alva, Okla. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Ronald Lee Lake and Glenn Dean Lake, both of Buffalo; two daughters, Glenda Jane Mattheyer, Buffalo, and Carol Ann Woolfolk, Tribune; a brother, Everett Lake, Ardmore, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George Lake; and five sisters, Alta Booth, Myrtle Bell, Nora Huenergardt, Hazel Smith and Florence Williams.

Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, in care of Myatt Funeral Home, Box 749, Buffalo, OK 73834.

Wilbur O. "Pete" McCartney

Funeral for Wilbur O. "Pete" McCartney, 79, of Wellington, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, Wellington, with the Rev. Quentin Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Wellington.

Mr. McCartney died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at Riverside Hospital in Wichita.

He was born March 13, 1922, at South Haven, the son of Chester and May (Laird) McCartney.

A Wellington resident for most of his life, he was retired after working as an insurance agent for the Prudential company. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the American Legion, belonged to Masonic Lodge No. 150 for 55 years, was a charter member of the Optimist Club, and was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II.

On Jan. 17, 1943, he married Collette Gasper at Wellington. She died in 1994. He was also preceded in death by his father; and his stepfather, Jess Harrison.

He married Darlene Robinson Rusk on Feb. 18, 1995. She survives. He is also survived by four sons, Mark, Martin and Mickey Rusk, all of Wellington, and Mitchell Rusk, Muskogee, Okla.; a daughter, Melinda Tencleve, Mayfield; his mother, May Harrison, Wellington; two brothers, Thomas L. McCartney, Plano, Texas, and Jerry L. McCartney, Garden City; a sister, Betty Jean Hayes, Orlando, Fla.; and 22 grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Frank Funeral Home, Wellington, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the Optimist Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Burgess Lavere Marshall

SYRACUSE - Burgess Lavere Marshall, 82, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Hamilton County Extended Care Facility, Syracuse, where he had been a resident since May 1, 1997.

He was born April 16, 1919, at Rankin, Ill., the son of Robert G. and Irma (Norris) Marshall. They moved to Syracuse when he was 1 and he attended school there, graduating in 1938.

For most of his adult life, Mr. Marshall worked in Syracuse as the produce manager for Herndon's IGA Grocery Store. Later he served USD 494 as the grade school custodian for 21 years, retiring from that position in 1981. He also had been the part-time custodian for the First Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Marshall was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, joining in 1938. He spent many years serving on various volunteer committees, was chairman of the church deacons for a period of time, was active in the Mariners Club and sang in the church choir. He was an avid KU sports fan and a great supporter of the Syracuse Bulldogs. He was a former member of the Lions Club and enjoyed collecting figurines of eagles.

On Nov. 23, 1945, he married Minnie Lou Beem at Syracuse. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Dennis Marshall, Henderson, Nev., and Brett Marshall, Dexter, Mich.; a brother, Kenneth Marshall, Syracuse; two sisters, Lucy Kitch, Craig, Colo., and Lavora Allen, Belleville; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father in 1959; his mother in 1964; a brother, Robert Marshall; an infant sister; and two grandsons.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. MST Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, Syracuse, with the Revs. Joe Gould and Bob Goebel officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery, followed by a family dinner at the church.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. MST Wednesday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the Hamilton County Long Term Care Unit's "Courtyard Project" or the American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.

Vesta C. Thigpen

DIGHTON - Funeral for Vesta C. Thigpen, 92, was to be 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Jay Stapleton officiating. Burial was to be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Thigpen died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.

She was born Sept. 27, 1908, at Rector, Ark., the daughter of Simeon Walter and Fannie (Henderson) Smith. She grew up in Arkansas.

For most of her adult life she lived in Flint, Mich., working as a beautician. In May 1979, she moved to Dighton. She served as a caretaker for several people and enjoyed playing cards. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Dighton.

In January 1953, she married DeLacy B. Thigpen at Flint. He died Dec. 31, 1968. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Martha Newsom; two sisters; a brother; and a stepson.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Louise Parks, Williston, Fla., and Juanita Mason, Fresno, Calif.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, in care of Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton.

Gerald Keith Toews

CIMARRON - Gerald Keith Toews, 51, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at his home in rural Cimarron.

He was born May 21, 1950, at Montezuma, the son of David W. and Delilah (Dirks) Toews.

A lifetime resident of the area, he was a farmer. He belonged to Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Cimarron.

On July 26, 1970, he married Diane Isaac at Montezuma. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Kyle Ray Toews, Cimarron; three daughters, Charlynn Ensz, Montezuma, Louann Redger and Nellie Toews, both of Cimarron; his parents, Montezuma; three brothers, Rodney, James and Lyndon Toews, all of Montezuma; a sister, Sheryl Schmidt, Montezuma; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Tony Ensz.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Cimarron. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Montezuma Funeral Home, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Robert Miran "Bob" Carter

ULYSSES - Funeral for Robert Miran "Bob" Carter, 76, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Patterson Avenue Church of God, Ulysses, with the Revs. Timothy Warren and Richard Ogle officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Charles B. Hart Post No. 79.

Mr. Carter died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 23, 1925, on the Carter homestead in Clark County, the son of Robert S. and Valta (Klotz) Carter.

Mr. Carter was a heavy equipment operator on mainline pipeline construction projects throughout the United States. He served with the U.S. Army as a PFC in World War II.

On May 23, 1947, he married Billie Marguritte Elliott at Ulysses. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Robert Bruce Carter, Ulysses, and Lonnie Carter, Great Bend; three daughters, Gayla June Mills, Moriarty, N.M., Francis Ann Smith, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Stacy Lynn Taylor, Eldorado Springs, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, John Carter, Kendall; and three sisters, Nancy Boyd, Genoa, Colo., Wanda Ruth (Tibe) Dahlquist, Bartlesville, Okla., and Ruby Campbell, Manter. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Vernon Dale Carter, Francis L. "Pete" Carter and Franklin D. Carter; a sister, Alta Yvonne Carter; and a grandson, Robert P. "Robbie" Carter.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Ricky Gale Thompson

SCOTT CITY - Memorial service for Ricky Gale Thompson, 38, of Hoisington, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Scott City. Cremation has taken place.

Mr. Thompson died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, in Hoisington.

He was born Dec. 8, 1962, at Lamar, Colo., the son of Delmar G. and Theda (Turley) Thompson. He grew up in Scott City.

A Hoisington resident for three years, moving from Scott City, he was a feedyard employee and belonged to Southern Baptist Church, Scott City.

On April 7, 2001, he married Therese Stejskal at Great Bend.

In addition to his wife of Great Bend, he is survived by his mother, Mountain Park, Okla.; two daughters, Tisha and Tasha Thompson, both of Scott City; a stepdaughter, Lyndsay Grubb, Ellinwood; two stepsons, Damian Palmberg, Lindsborg, and Jonas Grubb, Great Bend; two brothers, Gary Thompson, Fort Collins, Colo., and Kenneth Thompson, Grand Junction, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Delmar G. Thompson; and his grandparents.
