Virginia P. Minor

LEOTI - Funeral for Virginia P. Minor, 76, was 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Rick Just officiating.

Mrs. Minor died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 at Wichita County Hospital in Leoti.

She was born Nov. 20, 1925, at Marienthal, the daughter of Arthur Alfred and Eldora Jane (Miller) Shumard.

A homemaker, she was a lifetime resident of Wichita County. She belonged to the United Methodist Church and the VFW Auxiliary, both at Leoti.

On Oct. 19, 1947, she married Duane Minor at Arriba, Colo. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Steven Minor, McAllen, Texas; three daughters, Janis Kreutzer, Leoti, Maryse Minor, Nashville, Tenn., and Brenda Bothe, Garden City; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna J. Minor; and three sisters, Zella Mae Shumard, Evelyn Wiles and Irene Sowers.

Memorials are suggested to Wichita County Long Term Care at Leoti, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti.

LaVern "Corky" Robertson

MONTEZUMA - Graveside service for LaVern "Corky" Robertson, 69, of Montezuma, will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma, with the Rev. Gene Eshleman officiating.

Mr. Robertson died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Meade District Hospital, Meade.

He was born May 2, 1932, at Montezuma, the son of David Vernon and Mabel Mae (Ullom) Robertson. He graduated from Montezuma High School in 1950, from Dodge City Community College in 1952 and from Fort Hays State University in 1954.

A farmer, he was a lifetime resident of Montezuma and Gray County. He belonged to Ensign Masonic Lodge No. 413 and was an avid deer hunter.

On Feb. 6, 1961, he married Patsy Ann Alpers at Hays. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Ross Robertson, Garden City, and Ryan Robertson, Rockwall, Texas; a sister, Eva Lee Lundy, Scottsdale, Ariz.; a brother, David V. Robertson, Montezuma; and four grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the KSU Center for Basic Cancer Research or Hospice of the Prairie at Dodge City, both in care of Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.

Rev. Roger W. Thomas

Funeral for the Rev. Roger W. Thomas, 77, of Hutchinson, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson. A second service is planned for 2 p.m. Monday at Thornburg Church, Thornburg. The Revs. Alan Stambaugh, Jean Devine and Arden Roush will officiate. Burial will be in Thornburg Cemetery.

Mr. Thomas died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Hospice Residential Care Center in Hutchinson.

He was born Feb. 29, 1924, at Union City, Pa., the son of Will and Laura Iva (Brooks) Thomas.

Mr. Thomas had been a resident of Kansas since 1964, having previously resided in Oregon and California. He had lived in Hutchinson since 1992, moving from Lebanon.

A retired minister, he had served eight charges which included 15 churches throughout Kansas since 1964, including Copeland, Minneola and Moscow. He graduated from Western Evangelical Seminary of Portland, Ore., and from the former St. Mary's of the Plains of Dodge City and completed his master's degree with Kansas State University.

He was also a substitute teacher in the Hutchinson, Buhler and Nickerson school districts, was a member of the Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church at Hutchinson, and was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

On June 24, 1944, he married Mary Duran at Long Beach, Calif. She died March 14, 1968. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Rose Amiee Thomas.

On Aug. 5, 1974, he married Mary Elizabeth Routledge Dimitt at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, David Thomas, Wichita, and Ron Thomas, Tulsa, Okla.; three stepsons, David E. Dimitt, Garden City, Roger Dimitt and Chris D. Dimitt, both of Hutchinson; a daughter, Norma Overmiller, Smith Center; four stepdaughters, Lee Ann Shook, Ulysses, Terra Sue Hibbert, Hoisington, Sherry Odendahl, Wichita, and Mary Lane Keeling, LaVeta, Colo.; a brother, LaRue Thomas, Sebring, Fla.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

Friends may sign the register book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the mortuary, with visitation prior to the service on Friday. Memorials are suggested to the Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church or Hospice of Reno County, both in care of the mortuary, 1219 N. Main St., Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Cecelia M. Bongartz

Cecelia M. Bongartz, 90, of Ellis, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at the Ellis Good Samaritan Center.

She was born April 22, 1911, at Dana, Ill., the daughter of William and Ethzelda (Ranson) Jacobs.

On Aug. 11, 1936, she married Frank Henery Bongartz at Ellis. They farmed in Trego County. In 1974, they moved to Sublette where she worked in the Sublette school system. They returned to Ellis in 1997.

Mrs. Bongartz was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella, both at Ellis.

Her husband died Oct. 29, 2001. She was also preceded in death by two sons, James F. and Gary A. Bongartz; two brothers; and four sisters.

She is survived by two sons, Raymond Bongartz, Ogallah, and David Bongartz, Bay City, Texas; six daughters, Janette Shantz, Wichita, Joanne Mays and Kandice Michel, both of Garden City, Norma Offutt and Lynda Wallace, both of Houston, and Susan Ketchum, McCamey, Texas; two sisters, Florence Dyer, South Dakota, and Margaret Turner, St. Paul, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Ellis, with the Rev. Kevin Weber officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Church Cemetery, Ellis.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wasinger Funeral Chapel, Ellis, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Ellis Good Samaritan Center, in care of the funeral chapel.

Fannie "Rose" Warner

Former Dodge City resident Fannie "Rose" Warner, 99, of Ocklawaha, Fla., died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at Monrue Regional Medical Center.

She was born at Leeton, Mo., and had lived in Florida for many years. She resided in Dodge City for a time before returning to Florida two months ago.

Mrs. Warner was a member of First Christian Church of Dodge City. Known throughout southwest Kansas as a seamstress and quilter, she had completed 40 quilts and was a published quilter in "Traditional Quilt Worker" magazine.

Survivors include two sons, Maurice Warner, Ocklawaha, and Eugene Warner, Georgetown, Ky.; a daughter, Rosella Flowers, Dodge City; a sister, Lois Watson, Bay City, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Leo I. Warner; and a son, Dale Warner.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Ocala Women's Pregnancy Center, in care of Roberts Jennings-Archway Chapel, 206 S.W. 10th St., Ocala, FL 34474.

Barbara Louise "Bobbie" Knox

HUGOTON - Barbara Louise "Bobbie" Knox, 61, of Hugoton, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born Dec. 4, 1940, at Greeley, Colo., the daughter of Manuel and Louise (Garcia) Vasquez.

A Hugoton resident for many years, she was a homemaker and worked in home health care for several years. She enjoyed being with her family.

On Aug. 13, 1961, she married Delbert L. Knox Sr. at Clayton, N.M. He died Jan. 13, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her father; a son, Delbert L. Knox Jr., on July 3, 1991; a brother, Chris Whetstone; and a sister, Teresa Alonzo.

She is survived by three sons, Vincent E. Knox, Christopher G. Knox and Mike Knox, and two daughters, Tara J. Knox and Debi Miller, all of Hugoton; her mother, Louise Whetstone, Denver; three brothers, Joe Vasquez, Sam Vasquez and Scott Whetstone, all of Denver; six sisters, Lee Rodriquez, Rose Dahle, Kathy Christopher, Victoria Vasquez, DeDe Niblett and Lorraine Martinez, all of Denver; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Jeff Aenk officiating. Inurnment will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Friends may sign the register book from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the Diabetes Association, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

E. Pauline Lewis

E. Pauline Lewis, 86, of Lamar, Colo., died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Sandhaven Nursing Home in Lamar, following a recent illness.

She was born July 7, 1915, at Saginaw, Mo., the daughter of Robert E. and Audra E. Cochran.

She is survived by a daughter, Janis H. Lamle, Garden City; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Idella Noel, Greeley, Colo.; a son-in-law; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her husband of 38 years, Ray J. Lewis, died Jan. 7, 1973. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Lou Ann Propes; a son-in-law; a sister, Freida Manjeot; and three brothers, Leroy, Marion Elda and Hallie Cochran.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, Lamar, with the Revs. Chuck Cooper and Gary Don Newman officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Lamar.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and 8 to 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Lamar United Methodist Church, either directly or in care of the funeral chapel, 206 S. Fifth St., Lamar, CO 81052.
