Cora H. Byer

CIMARRON - Cora H. Byer, 89, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at The Shepherd's Center in Cimarron.

She was born Sept. 17, 1912, at Haviland, the daughter of William and Martha (Corrigan) Laird. She graduated from Haviland High School.

A longtime resident of Gray County, she was a homemaker and belonged to the United Methodist Church, Cimarron.

On Jan. 1, 1933, she married Jack Byer at Greensburg. He died in 1971. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jim Byer; two sisters; three brothers; and a granddaughter, Jill Byer.

Survivors include two sons, Bill and Jack Byer, both of Cimarron; a sister, Kate Barlett, Timberlake, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Cimarron, with the Rev. Frank DeFisher officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to Gray County Emergency Medical Services, in care of the funeral home.

Doris Jean (Deanie) Hicks

HUGOTON - Funeral for Doris Jean (Deanie) Hicks, 73, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Jeff Aenk officiating. Burial will follow in Hugoton Cemetery.

Mrs. Hicks died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Morton County Care Center, Elkhart, after a seven-month battle with a brain aneurysm.

She was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Vorhees Township in Stevens County, the daughter of William Smith and Ruth L. (Farmer) Peterson. She graduated from Hugoton High School in 1947.

A lifetime resident of Stevens County, she worked as a secretary and receptionist at a doctor's office for a number of years and later as a secretary at Farm Bureau Insurance. She was a member of First Christian Church, and enjoyed being the family historian, putting together many picture albums and articles of family history. She also had a special love for dogs and horses.

On Jan. 11, 1947, she married Louis H. Hicks at Syracuse. He died Oct. 1, 1995. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Willard and Leslie Peterson.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas G. Hicks and Edward D. Hicks, both of Hugoton; a daughter, Wilma Joyce Stahlke, Parker, Colo.; two brothers, Cornelius Peterson and Noel D. Peterson, both of Hugoton; a sister, Joy Williams, Guymon, Okla.; two grandsons; two granddaughters; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the Midtown Ronald McDonald House at Wichita or the Humane Society at Liberal, both in care of the funeral home, 423 S. Main St., Hugoton, KS 67951.

Dr. Robert Dale Boles

CIMARRON - Funeral for Dr. Robert Dale Boles, 79, of Comanche, Okla., was Wednesday at Temple Church of Christ, Temple, Okla., with Weldon Walling and Rick Jerez officiating.

Mr. Boles died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City, after a short illness.

He was born Aug. 27, 1922, in rural Muskogee County, Okla., the son of William and Mary Etta (Roe) Boles. He attended the University of Central Oklahoma and completed his undergraduate education at Oklahoma A&M before going on to medical school at the University of Oklahoma.

A resident of Comanche since 1987 and a former longtime resident of Dodge City, he was a pediatrician and a U.S. Coast Guard veteran. After an internship in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and placement on reserve status, he moved to Kansas and joined Dodge City Medical Center, practicing general medicine and later specializing in pediatrics.

On July 10, 1948, he married Beth Marie Hartwick. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, including Jeffrey Hartwick Boles of Cimarron; two daughters; two sisters; and seven grandchildren.

Dudley Funeral Home, Waurika, Okla., was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret "Ruthe" Duncan

LEOTI - Margaret "Ruthe" Duncan, 81, of Great Bend, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born Aug. 18, 1920, at Liberal, the daughter of William Edward and Mabelle Nora (Cole) Robbins.

A retired school teacher, she had taught in LaCrosse, Garfield, Pratt and at Roosevelt Junior High in Great Bend until retiring in 1982. She had lived in Great Bend since 1968, moving from Pratt.

Mrs. Duncan was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and the Cosmopolitan Study Club, both in Great Bend, Barton County Teachers Association, Barton County Historical Society, Kansas National Education Association, Kansas Retired Teachers Association, and was a member and former treasurer of Garfield American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 300.

On Dec. 27, 1948, she married Vaughn A Duncan at Garfield. He survives. Other survivors include three sons, Von Stewart Duncan of Hudson, Stephen Ray Duncan, Great Bend, and David Brent Duncan, Wichita; three sisters, Helen Winifred Baier of Seward, Alice Lucille "Lucy" Templer, Leoti, and Wilma Lenora "Billie" Beck, Mahomet, Ill.; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Cole Robbins; a sister, Marian Frances Robbins; and a grandson, Brandon Nash Duncan.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Great Bend, with the Rev. Jana Baxter officiating. Burial will be in Larned Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home, Great Bend, and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend, KS 67530.

William "Bill" Brown

DIGHTON - Funeral for William "Bill" Brown, 72, of Beeler, was to be 2 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church, Utica, with the Rev. Bruce Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Cemetery.

Mr. Brown died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus, Hays.

He was born Dec. 11, 1928, at Beeler, the son of George and Carrie (Smith) Brown. A graduate of Dighton High School, he was a farmer and lifetime resident of Lane County.

On July 27, 1952, he married Ruth Elaine Miller.

Survivors include three sons, William "Bill" Brown Jr., Dennis Brown and Terry Brown, all of Noel, Mo.; a brother, James, Beeler; two sisters, Kitty Fisher, Beeler, and Vera Whipple, Dighton; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Velma Stramel.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church of Utica, in care of Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City.

Donald Ivan McVey

Donald Ivan McVey, 74, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Oct. 6, 1927, at Montezuma, the son of Ellsworth Eli and Edith Matilda (Feldman) McVey. He grew up in Pritchett, Colo., graduating from high school there.

A Garden City resident since 1967, he was the owner and operator of McVey Oil Company. After his retirement, he worked on grounds maintenance for USD No. 457 and worked part time at NAPA Auto Parts.

Mr. McVey was a member of the Masonic Temple of Garden City, served as quartermaster of John J. Haskell VFW Post No. 2279 of Garden City, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. His special interests were hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking and going to casinos.

On Sept. 26, 1950, he married Sylvia Marie Garber at Bentonville, Ark. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Michael James McVey and Jerry Don McVey, both of Garden City; a daughter, Marsha Ann Rupp, Garden City; two brothers, Lawrence McVey, Deltona, Fla., and Nyle McVey, Pritchett; a sister, Dorothy Machart, Fort Lupton, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harold and Clyde McVey.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with Dr. R. Michael Lake officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with graveside military rites conducted by the Garden City Police Department Honor Guard.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Hospice, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Robert Topich

LAKIN - Robert Topich, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born Dec. 28, 1920, at Centerville, Ohio, the son of Joe and Molley (Loreb) Topich.

A Lakin resident for 20 years, he worked for several farmers in the Lakin area. His special interests were being a handyman and working on small engines. He also enjoyed reading, fishing and word search puzzles.

Mr. Topich had served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Normandy, northern France and Rhineland.

On Feb. 24, 1982, he married Valinda Estep at Dodge City. She preceded him in death as did his parents.

He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Patsy Brimm of Garden City.

Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at High Plains Retirement Village, Lakin, with the Rev. Roger Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Memorials to the Robert Topich Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St., Garden City.
