Rosella (McKillip) Wicke

ATWOOD - Rosella (McKillip) Wicke, the sixth of seven children of Arch and Mamie (Marquissie) McKillip, was born Nov. 8, 1917, at the family farm home in Hayes County, Neb. She died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at the Rawlins County Health Center in Atwood, at the age of 84.

She was baptized as an infant at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in rural Hayes County. She was a graduate of Hayes County High School in 1934, with a normal training certificate.

On Dec. 28, 1938, Rosella was united in marriage to Eric H. Wicke at Indianola, Neb. They made their home on Eric's birthplace, where they lived and farmed until 1953 when they moved to Atwood.

The joys of her life included her faith, family and attending to the needs of others. She loved to cook, garden and care for her home. She enjoyed going to the Obert Center, where she enjoyed the many great friendships she encountered. Her renew group of friends were a great importance and inspiration to her.

Rosella was a former member of the St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church in Herndon, a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Christina Mothers Altar Society in Atwood. She was a charter member of the Fun and Facts Extension Unit, Zeta Chi and was an active leader in Girl Scouts.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Eric in 1999; a son, Philip, in 1952; three brothers, Fay, James and Arden; and a sister, Virginia Felker.

Those left to cherish her memory are a son, Archie of Goodland; three daughters, Rita Koehn, Seattle, Linda Elder, LaCygne, and Debra Johnson, Garden City; two sisters, Jane Pearson, Stratton, Neb., and Lucille Fugate, Seattle; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A parish vigil and Christian Mothers rosary was to be Sunday at Williams Funeral Home of Atwood. Mass of Christian burial was to be Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood with the Rev. Damian Richards as celebrant. Interment was in the St. Mary's Cemetery at Herndon.

Memorials have been established in her name to the Obert Senior Center or to the Atwood Good Samaritan Center.

Williams Funeral Home of Atwood was in charge of arrangements.

James L. Stephens

GRINNELL - James L. Stephens, 54, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at his home in Grinnell.

Mr. Stephens was born Feb. 26, 1947, at McCook, Neb. He was a lifelong resident of Grinnell and worked as a farmer.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Stephens; and an infant daughter, Katherine Stephens.

Survivors include his wife Alberta "Albie" Stephens of Grinnell, and formerly of the Garden City area; two sons, Anthony Stephens, Columbus, Ohio, and Dominic Stephens, Goodwill, Okla.; five daughters, Leah Stephens, Front Royal, Va., and Elizabeth, Mary, Bridget and Monica Stephens, all of Grinnell; his mother, Alfreda Stephens, Grinnell; two brothers, Michael Stephens, Oakley, and Loren Stephens, Grinnell; and two sisters, Linda Grote, Liberal, and Denice Morris, El Dorado.

A vigil and rosary was to be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Angelus. Funeral service was to be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Roger Meitl officiating. Burial was to be at St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery at Angleus.

Memorial contributions may be made to an education fund for their children and may be left at any Colby bank or Harrison Chapel in Colby.

June M. Jury

ULYSSES - June M. Jury, 86, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.

Mrs. Jury was born on Jun 29, 1915, at Kansas City, Mo. She had been a resident of Port Isabel, Texas, for the last 22 years, moving from Ulysses.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Port Isabel, and a former member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Ulysses. She played the piano for both churches and also entertained for the nursing home residents in the Harlingen and Brownsville, Texas, area for many years. She loved sharing her musical and artistic talents.

She is survived by her husband, C.L. Jury of Port Isabel; a son, Dan Jury, Ulysses; a daughter, Jeannette Jury, Dallas; a brother, Fred Heathman, Ottawa; a sister, Helen Patton, Howard, Colo.; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses, with the Rev. Kevin Ross presiding. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses.

Frank B. Deatrich

QUINTER - Frank B. Deatrich, 87, Quinter, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at his home in Garden City.

Mr. Deatrich was born May 13, 1914, in Trego County, the son of Jacob S. and Jennie Leach Deatrich.

As a young lad he enjoyed playing baseball and riding his Indian Motorcycle. As a young man he tried out for the Cincinnati Reds Professional Baseball team. Although he was not drafted, his love of the game continued right up to and including cherring he Arizona Diamondbacks to their 2001 World Series victory over the New York team.

During the 1930s, Frank and his brother Joe rode the rails west and spent a year picking fruit.

He eloped with Mamie Rose Bloom on Aug. 20, 1938, at Colby. They moved to Wyoming in 1939 where he worked in the coal mines. Frank and Mamie returned to Kansas in the early 1940s and he worked a short time for Union Pacific Signal Corps. In 1944 he went to work for the Central Kansas Power Company, retiring after 34 1/2 years of service.

In addition to baseball, he enjoyed plaiying golf, hunting and fishing all over the world and parts of Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Mamie (Bloom) Deatrich of Quinter, the love of his life; a son, Frank S. Deatrich, Garden City; a daughter, Pat Jamison, Fairport; a sister, Billye Schoenberger, Atwood; 24 grandchildren; and 51 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was to be at 10 a.m. Monday at Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter with Jamie Bloom officiating. Burial was to be at Collyer Cemetery, Collyer.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Virginia June Wagner

SOUTH FORK, Colo. - Virginia June Wagner, 84, formerly of Garden City, Kan., died Nov. 30, 2001, at South Fork.

Mrs. Wagner was born June 10, 1917, at Smith Center, Kan. She was a longtime resident of South Fork and had lived in Garden City, Kan. She had received two years of college education.

Survivors include her husband, Walter W. Wagner, South Fork; a son, Robert Wagner, Golden; three daughters, Patricia Stillmock, Evergreen, Ruth Guy, Lewellen, Neb., and Mary Weiss, Centennial; a brother, Robert Cleaver, Amarillo, Texas; a sister, Ruth Hicks, Granbury, Texas; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 15, at Emmanuel Chapel in South Fork.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in the name of Virginia Wagner to Emmanuel Christian Academy, P.O. Box 301, South Fork, CO 81154.

Abram W. Penner

GREENSBURG - Abram W. Penner, 67, Greensburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Via Christi RMC, St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Mr. Penner was born June 20, 1934, at Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Abram and Katharina (Wall) Penner Sr. He married Nancy Neufeld June 13, 1953, at Mexico.

The couple moved from Coldwater to Greensburg in 1994. He was a mechanic and farmed. He was a member of the Reinlaender Mennonite Church in Sublette.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Penner of Greensburg; three sons, Abe N. Penner, Justina, Mexico, and Jake N. and Herman N. Penner, both of Garden City; three daughters, Helena Harms, Garden City, Maria Giesbrecht, Manitoba, Canada, and Annie Peters, Henry, Mexico; a brother, Pete Penner, Mexico; two sisters, Tina Dyck, Canada, and Aganetta Neufeld, Canada; 22 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Pete N. and Johnny N. Penner; two daughters, Nancy N. Penner and Tina N. Penner; a sister, Susan Enns; and two grandchildren, Nancy D. and Helena D. Penner.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Reinlaender Mennonite Church, Sublette, with the Rev. Henry Reimer presiding. Burial will be at Haskell County Cemetery in Sublette.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Haskell County Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established for the family. They may be mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
