Nettie C. Stewart

Nettie C. Stewart, 87, Garden City, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.

Mrs. Stewart was born April 13, 1914, at Bayonne, N.J., the daughter of William Thomas and Nelli Mary Jeannette (Doylend) Coffey. Born in Bayonne, Nettie moved around the country with her family. She started school in Chicago. Shortly after moving to Chicago, they moved to Oklahoma where they lived in various places before moving to Cushing, Okla. Nettie graduated from high school in Cushing.

She married Henry Charles Oursler in the mid 1930s in Oklahoma. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Coffeyville. He died in 1944. Later in the 1940s, Nettie Married M.A. Stewart in Salt Lake City, Utah.

She worked as a nurse for Dr. J.M. Dickinson and later for Dr. Bob Dickinson in Coffeyville for almost 40 years. She also worked at the Coffeyville Memorial Hospital. Nettie moved to Garden City in the mid 1980s and has lived in Garden City since. While living here, she has been working for Ketch. She also worked as a receptionist at Garnand Funeral Home.

Nettie enjoyed reading and her work. She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, and Holy Name Catholic Church, Coffeyville.

Survivors include a son, Edward D. Oursler, Garden City; two daughters, Suzanne Tongier, Ft. Smith, Ark., and Catherine Stewart, Garden City; and eight grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Charles Oursler; two brothers, Edward and Robert Coffey; a sister, Kate Pearl Hill; two granddaughters, Amelia Oursler and Shannon Hougland; and a grandson, Daniel Ryan Stewart.

A vigil and rosary will be at 7:30 tonight at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Restlawn Memorial Park, Coffeyville.

Memorials my be given to the Nettie C. Stewart Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Opal Ann Harlamert

DIGHTON - Opal Ann Harlamert, 92, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, at her home in American Canyon, Calif.

Mrs. Harlamert was born April 3, 1909, at Pendennis, the daughter of Clarence Milliron and Leda N. (Neeley) Smith.

On March 17, 1933, she married Leo "Bud" H. Harlamert at Yuma, Ariz. He died Sept. 3, 1985.

Opal was a longtime resident of American Canyon. She also maintained a home in Dighton. She owned and operated a beauty salon from 1958 until retiring in 1967, and worked as a beautician for 33 years.

She enjoyed traveling, her family activities and her church work. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene of Vallejo, Calif.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Burgess, Vallejo; a sister, Frances Marvel, Santa Fe, N.M.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Digton Memorial Cemetery with the Revs. Mike Grogan and Kerry Grogan officiating.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Dighton in care of Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton.

Robert "Bob" E. Townsend

Robert "Bob" E. Townsend, 77, Garden City, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Townsend was born Nov. 3, 1924, at Wilson, N.C., the son of Robert E. and Matilda (Tilman) Townsend II. He grew up and attended schools in Wilson.

Robert served in the Army Air Force during World War II from 1942 to 1946 and was stationed in Gulfport, Miss., Eau Claire, Wis., Santa Anna, Calif., Denver, Fort Myers, Fla., and Harlingen, Texas.

He married Rita Hineman on Feb. 2, 1945, at Denver. After his military service, Bob and Rita moved to North Carolina where he worked in his family's insurance business for a year. He then attended the school of modern photography in New York City and in 1948 he opened a photography studio in Garden City.

Bob and Rita have lived in Finney County and Garden City for 53 years. He also owned and operated the Culligan Softwater from 1961 to 1976. In 1976, Bob retired to spend more time doing commercial and aerial photography and flying. His passion for flying and his keen mechanical aptitude were evident as he built and restored several cub airplanes. He became a national and international advisor on cubs and he won first place for restoration of his first cub plane at a "fly-in" in Osh Kosh, Wis. He also enjoyed hot air ballooning and was a co-pilot on the Brookover plane for 27 years.

A member of the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, Bob also taught a fifth-grade Sunday school class. He was captain of a volunteer team during the flood of 1965, was a deputy sheriff, served on the Jeanne B. Corley Hospice Board and was a member of the Keystone and Builders Sunday school classes at the church for more than 50 years.

Bob also served as treasurer of the local Experimental Aircraft Association and volunteered at the Emmaus House until the fall of this year. Bob enjoyed traveling. He and Rita traveled to Finland, Israel, Great Britain and Hong Kong. He also enjoyed spending time with family and his morning coffee with buddies at McDonalds.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Matilda Ruffin.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Townsend; three sons, Robert Townsend IV, Redlands, Calif., Steve Townsend, Evanston, Ill., and Mark Townsend, Muncie, Ind.; a daughter, Nancy Bell, Leadville, Colo.; a brother, Jack Townsend, Wilson; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins presiding. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Friends may call from noon to 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Memorials may be made to the Robert E. Townsend Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.

Margaret R. Kerkhoff

DIGHTON - Margaret R. Kerkhoff, 86, Dighton, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Good Samaritan Center in Hutchinson.

Mrs. Kerkhoff was born Aug. 10, 1915, in Ness County, the daughter of John and Mary (Wendler) Maguire. She grew up south of Ness City and attended Ness City schools. She worked in a restaurant before her marriage.

She married Clarence J. Kerkhoff on Feb. 20, 1941, at Healy. After she and Clarence were married they moved to Dighton and ran an appliance store for a short time. They moved to Healy where they were farmers and they also operated an implement dealership in Dighton. He died Dec. 24, 1982.

Mrs. Kerkhoff moved back to Dighton in 1983. She enjoyed her bridge clubs, bowling leagues, her flower garden and ceramics and embroidering.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and one sister.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Hemel, Digton, and Mary Oden, Hutchinson; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church with the Revs. David H. Kraus, J.C.L., and Mike Helms as celebrants. Burial will be in the Healy Cemetery.

Visitation will be until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton.

Memorials may be made to the church in care on the funeral home.

Louis "Lou" J. Eddy

COOLIDGE - Louis "Lou" J. Eddy, 74, Coolidge, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Prowers Medical Center in Lamar, Colo., following a lengthy illness.

He was born May 7, 1297, in rural Hamilton County, the son of Charles Lester Eddy and Leta G. Turill-Eddy.

Survivors include three sons, Jaxon Brown, Crofton, Md., Ken Brown, Coolidge, and Charles Eddy, Holly, Colo.; two daughters, Aleta Kay Eddy, Austin, Texas, and Stacia Woods, Blanco, Texas; a brother, Charles Van Eddy, Syracuse; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 44 years, Helen Eddy; two brothers, Richard "Dick" Eddy and Andrew Eddy; and two sisters, Margaret Laubach and Alma Schmidt; and two half-sisters, Berniece Grissom and Mayme Gould.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Coolidge High School gymnasium with the Rev. Joe Gould officiating. Burial will be at the Coolidge Cemetery with full military honors.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, Holly, Colo.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Holly Volunteer Ambulance, either directly or through Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, Holly.
