Joy Lindyne Berthelson

Joy Lindyne Berthelson, 85, of Tescott, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Ottawa County Health Center in Minneapolis, Kan.

She was born July 20, 1916, at Amorita, Okla., the daughter of Miles A. and Leola (Howard) Blanchard.

Mrs. Berthelson was the retired owner of children's clothing and jewelry stores at Dodge City and Broomfield, Colo.

On June 24, 1934, she married Dale Berthelson at Cimarron. He survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Mary Jo Berthelson of Tescott.

There will be no service. Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the Tescott Historical Society, in care of Shields Funeral Home, Minneapolis.

Harold W. Phillips

Harold W. Phillips, 65, of Tampa, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Hillsboro Medical Center in Hillsboro.

He was born April 28, 1936, at Ashland, the son of Cleo and Anna Loraine (Dunn) Phillips. He grew up in Dodge City and attended schools there.

Mr. Phillips worked for Hy Plains Dress Beef for 30 years, retiring as a supervisor.

On July 14, 1957, he married Stella Hall at Dodge City. She survives. He is also survived by his father, Montezuma; a daughter, Cindy Adams, Spur, Texas; two sons, Chris Phillips, Topeka, and Norman Phillips, Wichita; four sisters, Juanita Boatright, Pembroke, Ga., Marilyn Phillips and Diana Sidebottom, both of Montezuma, and Carol Thomson, McPherson; four brothers, Don Phillips of Marion, Ed Phillips, Dodge City, Jim Phillips, Garden City, and Rick Phillips, Keota, Okla.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and a grandchild.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with Sterling Shinn officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Candace Ann Kraft

Funeral for Candace Ann Kraft, 18, of Liberty, Mo., was 10 a.m. Jan. 2 at St. James Catholic Church, Liberty. Burial followed in Glenridge Cemetery, Liberty. A prayer service took place Jan. 1 at the church.

Miss Kraft died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Born at Lakin on Sept. 10, 1983, she was the daughter of Wade and Rhonda (Pettz) Kraft.

A senior at Liberty High School, she was a member of the National Honor Society, DECA and St. James Catholic Church, and was a Salvation Army bell ringer. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, loved clothes and shopping, and had a passion for art, especially graphics and design. Her plans for the future were college and a profession in optometry or ophthalmology.

She is survived by her parents, of the home; a sister, Nicole Taylor; her grandparents, Ronald and Peggy Pettz, and Rose and Warren Kraft; her great-grandparents, Faye Kraft and Adrin Small; a niece; a nephew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorials are suggested to the Candace Kraft Memorial Scholarship Fund, 16819 N.E. 84th St., Liberty, MO 64068.

Church-Archer-Pasley Funeral Home, Liberty, was in charge of arrangements.

J.N. Blankenship

J.N. Blankenship, 96, of Lexington, Neb., and formerly of Hays, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Southview Manor Care Center in Cozad, Neb.

He was born Jan. 13, 1905, at Garfield, Ark., the son of Carroll and Cammie (Binkley) Blankenship.

Mr. Blankenship was the manager of J.C. Penney Department Store in Hays from 1955 until his retirement in 1965. After his retirement, he started a construction company, building duplexes and apartments in Hays.

On Jan. 20, 1949, he married Verna Miles at Elwood, Neb. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Marilyn Fairbairn, Garden City; two sons, Bob, Phoenix, and Mark, Reno, Nev.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jack; a grandson; two brothers, Carman and Paul; and two sisters, Mary Brokaw and Vera Motzek.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Seventh-Day Adventist Church, LaCrosse, with the Rev. Pat Scott officiating. Burial will be in LaCrosse City Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Hays Memorial Chapel and from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Reynolds-Love Chapel, Lexington.

Memorials are suggested to Seventh-Day Adventist Church in LaCrosse.

Karl "Colonel" Bayer

Memorial service for Karl "Colonel" Bayer, 49, of Pineville, Mo., will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bella Vista (Ark.) Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Laura Fleetwood officiating.

Mr. Bayer died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale, Ark.

He was born Dec. 12, 1952, at Garden City, the son of Joseph Adam and Margaret Ellen (Gatlin) Bayer.

A resident of the northwest Arkansas area for 22 years, he moved to Pineville four years ago. After going to Auctioneer School in Fort Smith in 1989, he was an auctioneer for more than 10 years. He was on the Highfill Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was active in that community. He enjoyed spending time with his family and raising goats.

He is survived by his wife, Susie Bayer; a stepson, Kevin Owens, Houston; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Baker, Ashdown, Ark., and Kari Owens, Dallas; five brothers, Donald Bayer, Ponca City, Okla., Adam, Lester and Rex Bayer, all of Garden City, and Marty Bayer, Gentry, Ark.; six sisters, Catherine Base, Cherryvale, Patty Quint, Mesa, Ariz., Mary Burrell, Siloam Springs, Ark., Karen Lubbers, Sharon Moran and Toni Martin, all of Garden City; six grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jo Ellen Spears.

Mildred Haverkamp

ELKHART - Funeral for Mildred Haverkamp, 86, was to be 11 this morning at Christ Lutheran Church, Elkhart, with the Rev. James A. Lucas officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Clay Center.

Mrs. Haverkamp died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.

She was born March 13, 1915, at Clay Center, the daughter of Fred and Esther (Forslund) Lathrop. She attended Clay Center schools, graduating from school there. She then attended Fort Hays State University for four years and received her teaching degree.

Mrs. Haverkamp taught school east of Elkhart and at Linn. She enjoyed sewing and traveling.

On Sept. 15, 1946, she married Clarence Haverkamp at Manhattan. He preceded her in death, as did her parents, a brother and a grandchild.

She is survived by three sons, Delton, Pasadena, Calif., Carroll, Shawnee, and Bryce, Garden City; and four grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Harrell Funeral Home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

Mabel Mae Koehn

MONTEZUMA - Funeral for Mabel Mae Koehn, 89, of Montezuma, was to be 10:30 this morning at Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Charles Schmidt and Edwin Classen, ministers, were to officiate. Burial was to be in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.

Mrs. Koehn died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident.

She was born Sept. 10, 1912, at Durham, in Marion County, the daughter of David and Anna (Schmidt) Jantz. When she was young, she moved to the Montezuma area and lived there for most of her life. A homemaker, she was a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite.

On Oct. 28, 1938, she married Jesse Koehn at Sublette. He died Sept. 6, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Vernie Koehn; four brothers, Jacob, Ben, Lee Roy and Jesse Jantz; and a sister, Clara Koehn.

She is survived by a son, Donald Koehn, Wichita; three daughters, Roseann Maxwell, Dodge City, Janice Bratcher, Paris, Texas, and Glenda Toews, Montezuma; two brothers, Ervin Jantz, Montezuma, and Floyd Jantz, Wichita; three sisters, Mildred Beadle, Dodge City, Elda Giesbrecht, Montezuma, and Carolina Koehn, Moundridge; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
