Deane P. Wiley

Funeral for Deane P. Wiley, 82, will be 6 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Dave Sweley officiating. Burial will take place later in St. Joseph.

Mr. Wiley died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born July 24, 1919, at Arkansas City, the son of William T. and Della M. (Page) Wiley. He graduated from high school in St. Joseph, attended community college there and later attended the University of Oklahoma from where he entered military service during World War II, earning the rank of Field Artillery Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

In 1954, he moved to Garden City and was the city manager for 33 years before retiring in 1987. He received a Distinguished Service Award in 1989 from both the International City Managers Association and the City of Garden City. In 1992, he was named as one of the state's five outstanding city managers. He held various executive positions in both the state and international city manager associations.

Mr. Wiley was a member, an elder and a trustee with the Presbyterian Church in Garden City. He belonged to BPOE Elks Lodge No. 1404 and the Finney County Senior Citizens Association, both at Garden City, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite, both at St. Joseph.

On Jan. 14, 1943, he married Melva Ruth Cotton at Oklahoma City. She survives. He is also survived by a son, William Dale Wiley, Warrensburg, Mo.; a brother, Kenneth Wiley, Pasadena, Calif.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, John Pope Wiley and Hugh Dean Wiley; two brothers; and one sister.

Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Deane P. Wiley Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Shirley Jean McClaflin

SUBLETTE - Shirley Jean McClaflin, 62, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at her home in Sublette.

She was born Aug. 10, 1939, at Alva, Okla., the daughter of George and Marguerite (Sternberger) Yochum.

Mrs. McClaflin was a member of Sublette Southern Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, and also enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, crafts (dolls and quilts), doing genealogy and going places with her friends.

On June 19, 1959, she married Mac McClaflin at Wellington. He died Jan. 15, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her father.

Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Lozar, Satanta; two grandchildren; her mother, Kiowa; a stepbrother, Richard Yochum, San Antonio; and two sisters, Kathleen McCarty, Great Bend, and Linda Dyck, Tampa.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Southern Baptist Church, Sublette, with the Revs. Dan Pearce and Jerry Smith officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to FACES, in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Anna L. Hammer

SCOTT CITY - Anna L. Hammer, 82, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born March 10, 1919, at Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Harrison Russell and Mabel Florence (Bertch) Bomhoff.

On Sept. 3, 1939, she married Garold C. "Jerry" Hammer at Wichita. They owned and operated several businesses in Denison, Texas and in Wichita, including Chicken Acres in Wichita; Artistic Marble in Wichita and in Denison; and were landlords in Denison. Her husband died Jan. 30, 1996, at Wichita. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and twin brothers, Clyde and Claud Bomhoff.

Mrs. Hammer moved from Wichita to Scott City in 1996. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, O&E Sunday School Class, Sue Circle and El Quartelejo Study Club and was past president of the Scott City Hospital Auxiliary, all at Scott City, and was past president of the Denison Hospital Auxiliary, which she belonged to for 25 years.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Hammer, Perth, Australia, and Bob Hammer, Berea, Ohio; two daughters, Kay Schmitt, Scott City, and Peggy Crutcher, Prairie Village; two brothers, H. Russell Bomhoff, Wichita, and J.C. Bomhoff, Pensacola, Fla.; five sisters, Marie McLaughlin, Lincoln, Neb., Edwina Trichler, Yates Center, Ruth Elliott, Blackwell, Okla., Esther Bocock, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Winifred Cloud, Wichita; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

William J. 'Bill' Kowalski

Vigil service for William J. "Bill" Kowalski, 64, a former Garden City resident, will be 7 tonight at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Wichita. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Resthaven Gardens of Memory, Wichita.

Mr. Kowalski, of Goddard, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002.

Born Dec. 24, 1937, at Dodge City, he was a farmer and also worked as a route salesman.

On Nov. 27, 1971, he married Deanna L. Boyce at Salina. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Zachary, Wichita, and Jesse, Pittsburgh, Pa.; a daughter, Rebecca Bailey, Goddard; his mother, Marie Kowalski, Goddard; four brothers, Leonard, Westford, Mass., Mark, Green Valley, Ariz., Tim, Foss, Okla., and Tom, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, John Kowalski; a son, Devon; two brothers, Lawrence and George; and a sister, Carol Salem.

Memorials are suggested to Kansas Wildlife and Parks or the Anthony Family Shelter, both in care of Resthaven Mortuary and Cemetery, 11800 W. Highway 54, Wichita, KS 67209.

Delfina (Lopez) Montez

Evening Spanish service for Delfina (Lopez) Montez, 46, will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Word of Life Church, Garden City. The Revs. Doug Brady and Stil Guerrero will officiate. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Montez died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at her home in Garden City.

She was born Sept. 24, 1955, at Rio Hondo, Texas, the daughter of Manuel and Rebecca Lopez. She attended high school in Brush, Colo., and later moved to Fort Morgan, Colo.

On Jan. 7, 1970, she married Frank Montez at Fort Morgan. The family moved to Garden City in 1985. Mrs. Montez was a supervisor for Western Uniform for five years and was a member of Word of Life Church. Her special interests included collecting stuffed bears and spending time with her granddaughters.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Danielle Caraveo and Nicole Montez, both of Garden City; a son, Roger Montez, of the home; her mother, Rebecca Rodriguez, Fresno, Calif.; three brothers; four sisters; and two granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her father.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Delfina Montez Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Briana Jae Wilken

SCOTT CITY - Memorial service for Briana Jae Wilken, 19, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. A memorial celebration of her life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating.

Briana died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Ness City Hospital.

She was born Dec. 10, 1982, at Scott County Hospital, the daughter of Carey J. and Debra J. (Reeves) Wilken. She lived in rural Wichita County until moving to Scott City. She attended schools in Scott City through her freshman year and had attended Bazine High School for the past 1 1/2 years.

Being confined to a wheelchair due to severe cerebral palsy did not keep her from enjoying life as she found pleasure in being with her friends and family and spending time with people.

Survivors include her father, Carey Wilken, and his wife, Lynette, Scott City; her mother, Debra Wilken, Bazine; two sisters, Amber Phillips, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Christina Buckner, Oyster Bay, N.Y.; two brothers, Ty and Andrew Buckner, both of Scott City; and her grandparents, Alda Wilken, Arlyn Kershner, Fyrma Underhill, Jerry and Irene Snow, Margaret Snow, and James and Rosalee Reeves. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Fred Wilken.

Memorials to the Briana Wilken Memorial Scholarship Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.

Ena M. DeWeese

SCOTT CITY - Ena M. DeWeese, 90, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.

She was born April 5, 1911, in Scott County, the daughter of Chase Ervin and Emma Luvina (Norman) Turpin.

A lifetime resident of Scott City, she owned and operated Hess Ready-To-Wear from 1953 until 1964. She was a member of World Wide Church Of God.

On Oct. 10, 1931, she married Alfred L. Hess at Scott City. He died Nov. 29, 1957, at Scott City. In 1960, she married Asa McBride. He died in the early 1970s. On July 24, 1976, she married William DeWeese at Ely, Nev. He died April 21, 1977, at Ulysses. She also was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, two brothers and a grandson.

Survivors include six sons, Don Hess, Red Springs, N.C., Darol Hess, Greensburg, Jim Hess, Scott City, Jerry Hess, Leawood, Morris Hess, address unavailable, and Myron Hess, Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Norma Dea Unruh, Mount Judea, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Park Lane Nursing Home, in care of the funeral home.

Adelia 'Tillie' Schwartz

DIGHTON - Adelia "Tillie" Schwartz, 94, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.

She was born Sept. 19, 1907, at Nekoma, the daughter of Christian J. and Katie (Yost) Block. She grew up in Nekoma and attended school there.

On Feb. 13, 1927, she married Alexander Schwartz Jr. at Bazine. They moved to Ness County and then to Lane County in 1930 where she and her husband farmed before moving to Dighton in 1954. He died March 11, 1967. She also was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother and a great-grandson.

Mrs. Schwartz was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton. A homemaker, she enjoyed crocheting, quilting, working in her flower garden and being around her family.

She is survived by three sons, Wilbert, Jetmore, Nelson, Dighton, and Eugene, Littleton, Colo.; a daughter, Nadine Goodman, Ness City; a sister, Alice Schwartz, Dighton; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or Lane County Long Term Care Unit, both in care of the funeral home.

Janet Hayzlett

SCOTT CITY - Janet Hayzlett, 59, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002.

A resident of Tucson, Ariz., she was a clerk at the Circle K convenience store.

She is survived by her husband, George; a son, Timothy, Gillette, Wyo.; three daughters, Tammy Lind, Kemberla Royal and Kelli Young, all of Tucson; her mother, Edna Wood, Scott City; three sisters, Shirley Mills, of Gillette, Donna Strickland and Velinda Lees, both of Tucson; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial service is planned for Thursday at Santa Cruz Lutheran Church in Tucson.
