Clifford Wayne Lighty

ULYSSES - Clifford Wayne Lighty, 73, of Ulysses, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 9, 1928, in Grant County, the son of Raymond J. and Ida (Dunsworth) Lighty.

A lifetime resident, he was a member of Patterson Avenue Church Of God, Ulysses. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren and watching traffic from his workshop.

On March 1, 1953, he married Helen E. Nelson at Roswell, N.M. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Ray E. Lighty, Fort Collins, Colo., and C.W. "Joe" Lighty, Round Rock, Texas; two daughters, Paulette K. Borthwick, Rye, Colo., and Cheryl L. Dreyer, Bartow, Fla.; a sister, Raylene Wang, Fort Collins; nine grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Gayle Sorensen; and a son, James F. Lighty.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Patterson Avenue Church of God, Ulysses, with the Rev. Tim Warren officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today through Friday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested for Church Missions, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Lionicio Torres

LEOTI - Funeral for Lionicio Torres, 107, will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Covenant Church, Leoti, with the Rev. John Janas officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery.

Mr. Torres died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Wichita County Hospital in Leoti.

He was born July 15, 1894, at Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, the son of Bonificio and Rosa (Cruz) Torres.

A farmer, he had been a Leoti resident since 1961. He belonged to Church of God of the First Born, Newton.

In February 1933, he married Mary Janas at Whorton, Texas. She survives. He is also survived by five sons, Tom and Jerry, both of Dimmit, Texas, Ernest, Louis and Roy, all of Leoti; five daughters, Rosa Llanes, Bloomington, Texas, Lucia Ornales, Austin, Texas, Pauline Rivera, Garden City, Eldia Hernandez and Lupe Rodriquez, both of Leoti; a stepdaughter, Sara Castillo, Snyder, Texas; 112 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five sons, two daughters, three brothers, five sisters, three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials to the Lionicio Torres Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Frances J. Gillam

Funeral for Frances J. Gillam, 94, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Chapel, Garden City, with the Rev. Patrick Nath officiating. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt.

Mrs. Gillam died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Aug. 23, 1907, at Croft, the daughter of Samuel B. and Susie (Corbett) Howell. She graduated from Coats High School in 1925.

On Aug. 16, 1927, she married Stanley Gillam at Pratt. They lived in Pratt before moving to Garden City in 1955. He died July 30, 1975. She also was preceded in death by her parents and 11 brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Gillam had been a resident of Terrace Garden Care Center for six months. Her special interests included gardening, crocheting, textile painting and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two sons, Gaylon Gillam, Garden City, and Dwayne Gillam, Manhattan; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Garden City Community College Nursing Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Wilma U. Fox

Wilma U. Fox, 79, of Valley Center, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Wichita.

Born in Garden City on April 25, 1922, she was the daughter of Fred and Minnie Mae (Gump) Ulrich.

A homemaker, Mrs. Fox had been employed as administration secretary at Larned State Hospital before her retirement.

On Aug. 24, 1941, she married Robert Fox at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by three sons, Bob Fox Jr., Helena, Mont., Mike Fox, Fort Collins, Colo., and Gary Fox, Norwalk, Iowa; two daughters, Judy Mohler, Warrensburg, Mo., and Terri Torres, Buhler; and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Chester and Wilbur Ulrich; and a sister, Anna Bel Shull.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Church of the Brethren, Wichita. Burial will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, seven miles south of Larned, followed by a reception at Grace Lutheran Church in Larned.

Memorials are suggested to First Church of the Brethren at Wichita or SCCS Health & Hospice of Derby, both in care of Baker Funeral Home, Box 242, Valley Center, KS 67147.

Jack W. Creeden

SUBLETTE - Jack W. Creeden, 64, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at his home in Sublette.

He was born March 13, 1937, at Sublette, the son of E.C. and Martha Henrietta (Dye) Creeden.

A lifetime resident of Sublette, he worked for Hinkel Drilling and Supplies from 1965 to 1982 and was a U.S. Army veteran. He enjoyed growing flowers and raising birds, enjoyed drag racing for 25 years, and enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

On Feb. 8, 1960, he married Diane L. Briggs at Lamar, Colo. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Jack A. Creeden, Pensacola, Fla., and Jay D. Creeden, Bailey, Colo.; a daughter, Janet S. Merriweather, Lakewood, Colo.; four brothers, Bob Creeden, Lake Wales, Fla., Bill Creeden, Pensacola, Ben Creeden, Garden City, and Jim Creeden, Sublette; five sisters, Nita Sunderland, Satanta, Joan Moore, Dodge City, Jane Deewall, Coldwater, Mary Allingham, Lakeside, Calif., and Wanda West, Odessa, Texas; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, D.G. Creeden.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Church Of The Nazarene, Sublette, with the Rev. William Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested for the family, in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Sarah Eleanor (Bell) Lile

Funeral for Sarah Eleanor (Bell) Lile, 88, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Lile died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Trinity Manor Nursing Home in Dodge City.

She was born Jan. 31, 1914, at Dodge City, the daughter of Benjamin and Ann Elizabeth (Ward) Bell. Her childhood was spent in western Kansas and in central Florida. Her family then returned to Garden City where she attended high school. After living in Garden City, Dodge City and Syracuse, they returned to Garden City to farm for many years before their retirement.

Mrs. Lile was active as a Girl Scout leader and 4-H leader. She later served as president of the Lincoln Goodwill HDU group and held local and state offices as a lifelong member of Rebekah Lodge.

A highlight of her life was making two trips to Methley Yorkshire, England to meet relatives. She enjoyed cooking, loved flower gardening, was a excellent seamstress and enjoyed caring for her family.

On April 4, 1935, she married Thurman Lile at Lakin. He died Oct. 14, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Donald Lile; and a brother, Tom Bell.

Survivors include three daughters, Helen Wilcox, Mission, Florence Crawford, Wichita, and Margaret Schmidt, Minneapolis; a brother, Paul Bell, Waupaca, Wis.; a sister, Kathleen Dawson, Two Buttes, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Manor Nursing Home, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Carolyn L. Matheson

HOLCOMB - Carolyn L. Matheson, 58, of Holcomb, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born May 18, 1943, at Hutchinson, the daughter of Harold W. and Laurene Ruth (Snowbarger) Thompson. She grew up in Sylvia and later in Burdett. She graduated from Burdett High School, and attended Fort Hays State University and Garden City Community College.

A Holcomb resident since 1961, she previously worked at Burtis Motors and Wheat Lands Restaurant, but had been working for the past 21 years as the City Clerk for the City of Holcomb. She enjoyed her family, watching baseball and cooking.

On July 14, 1963, she married Verneal M. Matheson at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Timothy S. Matheson and Kevin D. Matheson, both of Holcomb; her father, Miami, Okla.; three brothers, Wayne E. Thompson, Garden City, Gary D. Thompson, Topeka, and Robert D. Thompson, Liberal; and one grandson. She was preceded in death by her mother.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Charles West officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Carolyn L. Matheson Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Pearl Marie Regan

Vigil service and rosary for Pearl Marie Regan, 87, will be 8 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Regan died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born April 3, 1914, at Vliets, the daughter of Edwin and Mary (Rosedahl) Storm-Johnson. She grew up on a farm outside of Frankfort and graduated from high school in Frankfort.

Mrs. Regan was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Newman Club, Monday Bible Study, Tuesday Night Prayer Group, Wednesday Morning Prayer Group and was a lifetime member of Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo. A homemaker, she enjoyed traveling, her Bible study and prayer groups and exercising.

On Dec. 28, 1934, she married Aloysius Patrick Regan at Garden City. He died April 23, 1978. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Patrick Regan and Kevin Regan; three brothers; and four sisters.

She is survived by five sons, Tom Regan, Denver, Mike Regan, Holcomb, Tim and Shawn Regan, both of Garden City, and Jim Regan of Lawrence; four daughters, Kathleen Scheuchzer, Mary Regan and Ann Pottorf, all of Garden City, and Colleen Steck, Naperville, Ill.; 31 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 6:30 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary Church or the Finney County Historical Society, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
