Loyal G. 'Lou' Armstrong

SYRACUSE - Loyal G. "Lou" Armstrong, 84, of McPherson, died Thursday, Feb. 7 , 2002, at Memorial Hospital in McPherson.

He was born April 10, 1917, in Jasper County, Ark., the son of John and Florence (Spears) Armstrong.

A McPherson resident since 1973, he was a farmer, truck driver and landlord. He was a member of Grace Bible Church of McPherson, Syracuse Masonic Lodge and ISIS Shrine at Salina, and was a U.S. Army veteran.

On Feb. 25, 1941, he married Helen Mitchell at Neosho, Mo. He married Lucille Hamilton White on July 7, 1973, at Cantor. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, David, Mojave, Calif., John, Syracuse, and Mike, Shamrock, Texas; two daughters, Jo Ellen Rudd, Drasco, Ark., and Donna Sue Rohrer, Fairfield Bay, Ark.; two stepsons, Robert White, St. Maries, Idaho, and Rodney White, Brawley, Calif.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Louis Edward Armstrong.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Grace Bible Church, McPherson, with the Rev. Rich Duerksen officiating. Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Park Cemetery in rural McPherson.

Visitation hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with the family receiving friends from 3 to 5 p.m. at Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home, McPherson. Memorials are suggested to Grace Bible Church at McPherson, in care of the funeral home, 222 W. Euclid St., McPherson, KS 67460.

Anna Mae George

Funeral for Anna Mae George, 64, of Albert, was 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church, Albert, with the Rev. Charles Ledin officiating. Burial was in Peace Lutheran Church Cemetery, Albert.

Mrs. George died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus, Larned.

Born at Cimarron on May 3, 1937, she was the daughter of Charles Franklin and Emily (McNeil) Wheeler.

A lifetime resident of the Albert area, moving from Kalvesta, she was a homemaker and registered nurse. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, belonged to the choir and was past organist for the church, and also belonged to Evangelical Lutheran Women, all at Albert.

On Aug. 21, 1959, she married LoRay Darrell George at Albert. He survives. She is also survived by a son, LoRay W. George, Albert; four daughters, Jill C. LeManske, Overland Park, Tacy A. Keener and Kara L. Renz, both of Rush Center, and Gail L. Sanders, La Crosse; three brothers, Roy Wheeler, Manhattan, Loren Wheeler, Arvada, Colo., and Wayne Wheeler, Holcomb; two sisters, Frances Embree, Garden City, and Betty Sinclair, Littleton, Colo.; and 11 grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the Otis Emergency Medical Service, both in care of Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned.

Mabel E. Campbell

SCOTT CITY - Mabel E. Campbell, 91, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born Nov. 10, 1910, in Scott City. She is the daughter of Clyde and Hattie E. Beal Rictor. She was the owner and operator of Campbell Cleaners in Scott City. She was a lifetime resident of Scott City.

On Sept. 10, 1930, she married Clarence E. Campbell, in Scott City. He passed away on Nov. 24, 1955 in Scott City.

Survivors include two daughters, Ella Mae Eisenhour and Nancy Zipperer, both of Scott City; two step-daughters, Kathryn Durrant, Brandon, Fla., and Lois Briener, Tigard, Oreg.; one sister, Emily Coryell, Flagler, Colo.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Jack, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Christ in Scott City. The minister is Clyde Schinnerer. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. Intermet is at Scott County Cemetery, Scott City. Memorials can be sent to the Church of Christ, VIP Center, care of Price & Sons Funeral Home.

Chess Cain

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for former Scott City resident Chess Cain, 73, of Carthage, Texas, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Jimerson Funeral Home, Carthage, with Jacky Smart officiating. Burial will follow in Oddfellow Cemetery.

Mrs. Cain died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at a care facility in Shreveport, Texas.

She was born June 12, 1928, at DeQueen, Ark., the daughter of Herman Leton and Margaret Loca (Waller) Oglesby, the seventh of their nine children.

Mrs. Cain lived in Scott City for 13 years, retiring to Gary, Texas in 1990 and to Carthage in 1995.

She is survived by a daughter, Connie Danielson, Carthage; two sons, Ronnie Martin, Big Lake, Texas, and Brent Cain, Aurora, Texas; three brothers, Thomas Oglesby and Edgar Oglesby, both of Redding, Calif., and Bryant Oglesby, Carthage; a sister, Juanita Soape, Carthage; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Cain; her parents; three brothers; and one sister.

Mary E. Baffa

Funeral for Mary E. Baffa, 88, a former resident of Justice, Ill., is scheduled for Saturday at St. Fabian Church, followed by burial in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum in Justice.

Mrs. Baffa died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Manor Care Nursing Center in Palos Heights, Ill.

She was a member of the Slovak Catholic Sokol, Assembly 11.

Survivors include five sons, Daniel Baffa of Garden City, Dennis, David, James and Jerry Baffa; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ted Macejak; and a sister, Josephine Krajicek.

Kubina-Tybor Funeral Directors, Chicago, is in charge of arrangements.

Merle Andrews

Funeral for Merle Andrews, 95, of Wichita, was to be 2 p.m. today at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, Wichita.

A homemaker, she died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002.

She is survived by a nephew, Tom LeFort, San Diego; and two great-nieces, Linda Starr, Garden City, and Marla Austin, Liberal. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Wilma Collins, Sylvia LeFort and Opal Lundgren.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the mortuary.

John Raymond Tope

SYRACUSE - John Raymond Tope, 54, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.

He was born July 20, 1947, at Syracuse, the son of George H. and Ethel V. (Roberts) Tope. He grew up at Kendall, where he helped farm from 1947 until 1981. He graduated from Kendall High School in 1965 and then served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army. In 1981, he moved to Syracuse.

On Sept. 18, 1995, he married Judy Ann Krause at Westcliff, Colo. They owned and operated Topes Auto Glass in Syracuse and he also worked as a warehouse supervisor at Wheatland Electric from 1975 until his death.

Mr. Tope was a member of the Syracuse Bowling Association, Jayhawk Scratch Bowling League and the American Bowling Congress. He was a former member of the Kendall Methodist Church and Hamilton County Fair Board.

Besides being an avid bowler, he enjoyed riding snowmobiles and four wheelers, doing woodworking projects especially on their cabin in Westcliff, collecting caps, guns and woodworking tools, motorcycling, traveling, anything to do with wheels and motors, and his two Pomeranian dogs, Ozzie and Jasper.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Syracuse; a son, John Raymond Tope Jr., Phoenix; two daughters, Heather Mae Baker, Chase, and April L. Dixon, Salina; a stepson, Kim L. Ashmore, Hernando, Miss.; a stepdaughter, Tawnya Ashmore, Belgrade, Mont.; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; a sister, Janet M. Loeppke, Lakin; a sister-in-law; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, in 1988; a brother, Daniel "Boone" Tope, in 1994; and two grandsons.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. MST Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Bill Fitzgerrel officiating. Graveside committal service will follow in Kendall Cemetery.

Visitation hours are until 8 MST tonight and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. MST Friday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the Westcliff Emergency Medical Technicians, in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.

Charliz Christine Warren

Graveside service for Charliz Christine Warren, the daughter of Stacy Warren of Garden City, will be 2 p.m. Friday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Doug Brady officiating.

Charliz was stillborn Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her grandparents, Tim Warren, Garden City, and Christina Warren, Larned; and her great-grandmother, Carolyn T. Warren, Garden City.

There will be no visitation. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Genevieve A. Whiteman

TRIBUNE - Memorial service for Genevieve A. Whiteman, 86, of Albuquerque, N.M., will be 11 a.m. MT Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune, with the Rev. Robert Nuckolls officiating. Inurnment will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Mrs. Whiteman died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Manor Care Sandia Nursing Home in Albuquerque.

She was born April 17, 1915, at Salina, the daughter of M.J. and Sadie Lytle.

A resident of Albuquerque since 1996, moving from Paonia, Colo., she was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Tribune.

On July 3, 1965, she married Roy F. Whiteman at Raton, N.M. He died Aug. 13, 1996, at Garden City.

She is survived by a son, Richard Taylor, Ottawa, Canada; a daughter, Carolyn Romero, Albuquerque; and three grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Edgar H. 'Bus' Gerecke

Graveside service for Edgar H. "Bus" Gerecke, 93, of Lawrence, will be 1 p.m. Friday in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence.

Mr. Gerecke died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Center in Lawrence.

He was born July 15, 1908, at Rocky Ford, Colo., the son of Edgar H. and Ada (Ellingwood) Gerecke. He grew up in Rocky Ford and Lamar, Colo., graduated from Lamar High School in 1925 and attended Kansas State University for two years.

Mr. Gerecke was the manager of the alfalfa mill in Kornman, Colo., and then in Garden City. From 1962 to 1989, he was a night clerk at Wheat Lands Motel in Garden City, retiring in 1989.

He was a member of Phi Delta Theta, and a former member of the Rotary Club and the Presbyterian Church, both in Garden City. He was an avid fan of football, basketball and baseball.

In August 1935, he married Claudine Maize Smith. She died in February 1986.

He is survived by a son, Kirk Gerecke of Lawrence.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence. Online condolences may be sent to www.rumsey-yost.com.
