Nola V. Meek Prose

DIGHTON - Nola V. Meek Prose, 90, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.

She was born Dec. 4, 1911, at Olwein, Iowa, the daughter of William and Ava Moore Meek.

A homemaker, Mrs. Prose had been a resident of Lane County since 1950. She was a member of First Christian Church and FCE, both at Dighton, the Stitch & Chatter Club of Buda, and Kalvesta Quilters.

On Sept. 12, 1934, she married Frank C. Prose at WaKeeney. He died Dec. 24, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Paul Meek; and a sister, Fern Poer.

She is survived by two daughters, Helen Hanks, Dighton, and Adele Hack, Springfield, Ore.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Revs. Mike and Kerry Grogan officiating. Burial will be in Buda Cemetery, south of Beeler.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, and prior to the service Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church.

Larry Vernon Richardson

Larry Vernon Richardson, 61, the grandson of the founder of Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002.

A Wichita resident, he was born Oct. 10, 1941, at Garden City. He graduated from East High School and Wichita State University. During his college years, he was employed at Wesley Hospital in the laboratory. Following graduation, he was employed with IBM in Wichita and Kansas City for 16 years. He spent two years in Saudi Arabia with ARAMCO Oil Co., and his recent years were with SCA in Dallas.

Mr. Richardson was a life master bridge player and was active in the Bridge Association in Wichita, Kansas City and Dallas. He was also active in sports, golfing, swimming and running.

He is survived by his parents, Vernon and Ada Ruth Olomon Richardson of Wichita. He was preceded in death by a sister, Cheryl Ilene Richardson.

Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel, Wichita. Visitation with the family is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Friends of the Lee Richardson Zoo for the Kansas Waters Display, P.O. Box 1638, Garden City, KS 67846 or the WSU Foundation, Science Department, 1845 Fairmount, Wichita, KS 67260-0002.

Clarence L. Reimer

LEOTI - Graveside service for Clarence L. Reimer, 93, will be 12:30 p.m. Friday in West Bethany Free Methodist Church Cemetery, in rural Wichita County, with the Rev. Hendrick Smidderks officiating.

Mr. Reimer died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Wichita County Long Term Care Unit in Leoti.

He was born May 11, 1908, at Alden, the son of Jacob A. and Martiebell Vincent Reimer.

A farmer, he was a lifetime resident of western Kansas. He belonged to West Bethany Free Methodist Church.

On Dec. 24, 1939, he married Ethel Sides in Greeley County. She died Oct. 21, 1986, in Wallace County.

He is survived by a son, Wesley Reimer, Wallace County; three daughters, Connie Anderson, Lindsburg, Shirley Beals, Topeka, and Cindy Rybaki, Bloomington, Neb.; two brothers, Wayne Reimer, Topeka, and Cecil Reimer, Guadalajara, Mexico; two sisters, Gertrude Mallory, Topeka, and Juanita Brown, Leoti; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, Fourth and J streets, Leoti, KS 67861.

Marie Julia Grimsley

SATANTA - Marie Julia Grimsley, 85, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit.

She was born Dec. 12, 1916, in Seward County, the daughter of Oscar and Lola Bernice Seward Brooks.

On March 17, 1936, she married James Francis Grimsley at Beaver, Okla. He died March 1, 1964. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Stanley Sherrill Grimsley; and a grandson.

A Garden City resident for about 20 years, Mrs. Grimsley moved to Satanta in 1982. She worked for 20 years as a nurse's aide at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City and also enjoyed working with the Satanta Hospital Auxiliary.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Satanta Hospital Auxiliary and Happy Agers, all at Satanta. She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, and also enjoyed her many church activities. Her hobbies included ceramics, sewing, crossword puzzles, gardening and yard work.

Survivors include two sons, Larry James Grimsley, Hays, and Michael Jay Grimsley, Garden City; five daughters, Nancy Colleen Kiehl, Shelton, Wash., Mary Ann Oliver, Satanta, Karen Jane Moore, Bonny Lake, Wash., Janice Marie Turrentine, Deerfield, and Sherri Bernice Fortin, Lakin; a daughter-in-law; three brothers, Gene Brooks, Eufala, Okla., Jim Brooks, Hill City, and Ernie Brooks, Kingman, Ariz.; a sister, Susie Richardson, Liberal; 20 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Jeff Miller officiating. Private burial took place earlier in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today through Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to Satanta Long Term Care Unit or the United Methodist Church of Satanta and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value at Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Mae Myrtle Cadenhead

ULYSSES - Mae Myrtle Cadenhead, 93, of Lenoir, N.C., and formerly of Ulysses, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at her daughter's home in Lenoir.

She was born Nov. 25, 1908, at Ulysses, the daughter of John Ernest and Ella Lucreitan Kendall Fogleman.

On Sept. 1, 1924, she married Jimmie Newton Cadenhead at Santa Fe, N.M. He died June 20, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Jimmie Newton Cadenhead Jr. and John William Cadenhead; and a daughter, JoAnna Crowell.

A homemaker, Mrs. Cadenhead was a member of Grace Baptist Church of Ulysses and Calvary Baptist Church of Simpsonville, S.C.

She is survived by a son, Robert R. Cadenhead, Simpsonville; a daughter, Carol Burns, Lenoir; a brother, Ray Fogleman, Ulysses; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Robert R. Cadenhead officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested for Grace Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Susie B. Barker

Susie B. Barker, 92, of Madison, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.

She was born April 14, 1909, at Buhler, the daughter of Wilhelm and Margaret Martens Schroeder.

A homemaker, she had been a Madison resident since Feb. 14, 1937, moving from Russell.

On Feb. 11, 1925, she married Frank C. Barker at El Dorado. He died Feb. 10, 1973. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Edna Barker; two brothers; and a grandson.

Survivors include a son, Frank Barker, Garden City; three grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilson Funeral Home, Madison, with the Rev. Bob Robison officiating. Burial will follow in Blakely Cemetery, northwest of Madison.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to First Christian Church of Madison, in care of the funeral home, Box 488, Madison, KS 66860.

Delwin Lee Stapleton

Delwin Lee Stapleton, 61, of Noble, Okla., died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Norman, Okla.

He was born March 10, 1941, at Sublette, the son of John D. and Mildred Birney Stapleton. He graduated from high school in Sublette, and attended Garden City Junior College and Friends University in Wichita.

On Nov. 6, 1958, he married Connie Lou Knoettgen at Sublette. They moved to Norman in 1970. Mr. Stapleton was an insurance broker and belonged to McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife; his mother, Mildred Loucks, and her husband, Dave, of Copeland; two sons, Kemp Stapleton, Tuttle, Okla., and Ricky Stapleton, Norman; two daughters, Sonya Sugg, Noble, and Sharon Puckett, Lawton, Okla.; two sisters, Linda Watson, Cimarron, and Loretta Holland, Sublette; three brothers, Dorsey Stapleton, Sublette, David Stapleton, Meade, and Danny Stapleton, Liberal; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Noble, with the Rev. Phil Fenn officiating. Burial will follow in Noble I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Havenbrook Funeral Home, Norman, is in charge of arrangements.

William Patrick 'Pat' Halloran

Vigil service for William Patrick "Pat" Halloran, 86, of Wichita, will be 7 tonight at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel, Wichita. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Cathedral, Wichita.

Mr. Halloran, a former resident of Lakin and Garden City, died Saturday, March 23, 2002.

He was born Sept. 11, 1915, at Pretty Prairie, the son of Thomas Michael and Mabel Davis Halloran.

Mr. Halloran was retired after serving as the advertising manager for the Wellington Daily News. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving as a captain in the Armored Division.

He is survived by a stepson, John E. White, Plano, Texas; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials are suggested to the Center of Hope, 400 N. Emporia, Wichita, KS 67202.

Juan 'John' Ruiz

Juan "John" Ruiz, 69, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

Born July 11, 1932, at Stamford, Texas, he was the son of Juan and Feliciana Mendez Ruiz Rico. He attended schools in Texas. After moving from Texas to Garden City in 1964, he attended Garden City Community College and Liberal Vo-Tech.

Mr. Ruiz worked as a carpet layer for Southwest Carpet & Tile and for Ysidro Villarreal Carpet before becoming a self-employed carpet layer. He and his companion, Susie Ortega, also owned and operated Los Pobres Record Shop.

He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Stamford. He enjoyed playing golf and bingo, fishing, hunting, treasure hunting and collecting cars.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Susie Ortega, of the home; two sons, Jerry and Ralph Ortega, both of Garden City; a daughter, Marie Ortega Ortiz, Topeka; two brothers, John Gonzales, Garden City, and Jesse Mendez, Stamford; four sisters, Lupe R. Martinez, Garden City, Emma Lopez LeBlanc, Houston, Maria de los Angels Ruiz, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and Maria Teresa Mendez, Stamford; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Ruiz Jr.; a brother, Pete Ruiz; and a sister, Maria Trinidad.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Garden Valley Retirement Village. Chaplain Richmond Graham will officiate.

There will be no visitation. Memorials to the John Ruiz Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
