Andrew O'Donovan

Andrew O'Donovan, 59, a former Garden City resident, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at a hospital in the Topeka area.

He was born March 5, 1943, at Cork, Ireland, the son of Daniel and Ita (Dougherty) O'Donovan.

Mr. O'Donovan was the director for the Office of Prevention Connect Kansas. He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

On March 2, 1979, he married Kathryn Pickett in Cincinnati. She survives. He is also survived by his mother, Cork; two sons, Fergal and Rory O'Donovan, both of Topeka; a daughter, Maeve O'Donovan, Topeka; and five sisters, Carmel O'Donovan, Monestraven, Ireland, Marian Feeley, Youghal, Ireland, Denise Sidebottom, Scholes, England, Ita Casey, Dublin, Ireland, and Claire Cottrell, Cork.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Topeka, followed by burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation hours are after 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, Topeka, where a parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Andrew O'Donovan Children's Education Fund, in care of the funeral home, 800 SW Sixth St., Topeka, KS 66603-3183.

E.L. 'Gus' Gestenslager

E.L. "Gus" Gestenslager, 73, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Oct. 30, 1928, at Mullinville, the son of Frederick and Lillian (Roy) Gestenslager. The family moved to Garden City in 1942.

Mr. Gestenslager worked for Henkle Drilling Co. before starting his own business, Gestenslager Drilling, which he owned and operated for almost 40 years. He then worked at Minter-Wilson Drilling Co., and also owned Centric Water Well Services. He retired in 1999.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Garden City and served on the church board. He also belonged to the Eagles Lodge and the Kansas Water Well Association. He enjoyed fishing, motorcycles, race cars, snowmobiles and flying airplanes.

On Sept. 28, 1948, he married Irene Nusser at Rocky Ford, Colo. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Stephen L. Gestenslager, Lakin; four daughters, Sharron Hutchison, Grand Island, Neb., Shanon L. Gigot, Garden City, Susan A. VanDiest, Telluride, Colo., and Sally D. Hessman, Antlers, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth Gestenslager; and a half sister, Frieda Zimmerman.

Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Carl Edward Herren

SYRACUSE - Carl Edward Herren, 82, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in Syracuse.

He was born March 5, 1920, at Coolidge, the son of George Washington and Edith Ellen (Webster-McClarey) Herren, one of 12 children. He attended District 3 Country School north of Coolidge and went to high school at Coolidge.

A lifelong resident of Hamilton County, with the exception of 14 years in Horseshoe Bend, Ark., he owned and operated the Big A Auto Parts Store in Syracuse and Scott City before retiring in 1974. He had also been a mechanic for International Harvester and was a farmer.

Mr. Herren was a member of Syracuse Southern Baptist Church and a former member of the Odd Fellows and the Chamber of Commerce. His hobbies included quilt making (by machine) and woodworking. He also enjoyed cats and his family activities.

On May 26, 1940, he married Vivian Mae Winchester. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Rochelle Brown, Grand Bay, Ala., and Glenna Nelson, Woodhull, Ill.; four sisters, Thelma Stimatze and Venus "Mary" Gropp, both of Syracuse, Minnie Kinslow, Garden City, and Dolly Beaman, Lakewood, Colo.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Noah and Elza Herren; and five sisters, Velma Viola Herren, Laura Beryl Herren, Florence Berndt, Mellissa Fay and Gladys Gardner.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. MST Monday at the Wesleyan Church in Syracuse, with the Rev. Rod Collins officiating. Graveside committal service will follow in Coolidge Cemetery. The family will then gather for lunch at the Hamilton County Fair Building in Syracuse.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST today and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. MST Sunday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. The family will meet privately at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday for a flower card reading.

Memorials to the Carl Herren Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Ralph Orville Cutter

HUGOTON - Ralph Orville Cutter, 89, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Pioneer Manor in Hugoton.

Born Aug. 18, 1912, at Hoyt, to William I. and Irene (Morrison) Cutter, he had been a Hugoton resident since 1913.

He graduated from Panhandle State University with a bachelor's degree in education in 1931. A farmer, he had taught at country schools in Stevens County and also taught for several years at Liberal.

Mr. Cutter was a member of First Christian Church of Hugoton.

On March 16, 1940, he married Elizabeth Brady at Liberty, Mo. She died Dec. 31, 1973. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Daisy Cutter and Faith Stone.

On Jan. 5, 1975, he married Maurine Fields Cox at Hugoton. She survives. He is also survived by a son, David Cutter, Hugoton; two stepsons, Otis Cox, Austin, Texas, and Neal Cox, Reed Springs, Mo.; a daughter, Florence Metcalf, Hugoton; a stepdaughter, Myra Hostetter, Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Paul Cutter, Boise City, Okla.; a sister, Ruth I. Smith, Hugoton; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Jeff Aenk officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Hugoton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Ozark Christian College at Joplin, Mo., or to the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home, 423 S. Main St., Hugoton, KS 67951.

Kevin James Neufeld

Kevin James Neufeld, 36, of Lee's Summit, Mo., died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, from injuries suffered in an industrial accident.

He was born Dec. 5, 1965, at Dodge City. He attended Mid-America Nazarene University and received a master's degree from Kansas State University.

Mr. Neufeld had lived in the Kansas City area for the past 10 years. He and his wife, Dana, were owners of the Doores-Neufeld Company in Blue Springs, Mo.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kayla and Kenzie Neufeld, both of the home; his parents, Melvin and Maxine Neufeld, Ingalls; a sister, Sharla Smith, Ingalls; his grandparents, Otis and Gladys Bond, Garden City; his parents-in-law; three nieces; and two nephews.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene in Lee's Summit, followed by burial in Floral Hills East Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the scholarship fund for his children, in care of First Community Bank, 301 S.E. Main St., Lee's Summit, or to the church memorial fund.

Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.

Marla Janyne Birney

Marla Janyne Birney, 47, a registered nurse who had resided in Wichita, died Sunday, March 17, 2002.

She is survived by her parents, Robert and Marcille Birney, Liberal; three brothers, Milan Birney, Satanta, Marc and Max Birney, both of Sublette; and a sister, Marita Hampton, Clarksville, Ark.

Private services have been conducted.

DeVorss Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary, Wichita, was in charge of arrangements.

Judy Bradstreet

Judy Bradstreet, 61, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Jan. 25, 1941, at Ness City, the daughter of Elton and Kay (Wierman) McLeish. She grew up in Dighton and attended schools there.

On July 10, 1960, she married Max Bradstreet at Dighton.

Mrs. Bradstreet lived in Dighton until moving to Garden City in 1979. She worked as a CMA nurse at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Bradstreet of Ellis and Jack Bradstreet of Germany; two daughters, Cindy Venable, Amarillo, Texas, and Laura Wiechman, Scott City; a brother, John McLeish, Cushing, Okla.; a sister, Janice Smith, Garden City; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Mark Ingmire officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Anna Barbara Smith

SYRACUSE - Graveside service for Anna Barbara Smith, 80, of Syracuse, will be 2 p.m. MST Friday in Sunset Memorial Cemetery near Sterling, Colo.

Mrs. Smith, a homemaker, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in Syracuse.

She was born Dec. 6, 1921, at Julesburg, Colo., the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Mossmann) Schiefelbein, one of 17 children. She attended school in Sterling, Colo., where she lived for most of her life before moving to Syracuse in January 2001 to be closer to family.

Mrs. Smith served in the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell, Ky. She was a former member of the VFW, and enjoyed gardening, canning and collecting various items.

In 1955, she married Howard Smith at Keota, Colo. He died in 1976. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and 14 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a son, William McKinney, Syracuse; a daughter, Regina McInerney of Nevada; two sisters, Katherin Bosio, Soledad, Calif., and Regina Schiefelbein of Arizona; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Hamilton County Extended Care Facility, in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.
