Sam I. Unruh

COPELAND - Sam I. Unruh, 101, of Montezuma and formerly of Copeland, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where he had been a resident.

He was born June 13, 1900, in Marion County, the son of Isaac P. and Lena (Jantz) Unruh.

A retired farmer, he was a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Copeland.

On March 18, 1923, he married Agnes Smith at Montezuma. She died Feb. 8, 2002. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lois Unruh; four brothers, Lincoln, Clyde, Ezra and Harvey Unruh; two sisters, Minnie Unruh and Alda Dirks; a son-in-law; two daughters-in-law; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.

He is survived by four sons, Cecil, Louis, Eugene and Sam D. Unruh Jr., all of Copeland; seven daughters, Luella Koehn, Vada Unruh, Shirley Unruh, Maxine Schmidt and Jeanette Nightengale, all of Copeland, Juanita Nightengale, Scott City, and Sylvia Wedel, Paris, Texas; a brother, Dewey Unruh, Versailles, Mo.; two sisters, Susanna Koehn, Montezuma, and Myrtle Koehn, Livingston, Calif.; 35 grandchildren; 105 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Salem Mennonite Church, Copeland, with burial in Salem Mennonite Cemetery, Copeland.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Jim Erskin

Funeral for Jim Erskin, 66, of Springdale, Ark., was 10 a.m. Monday at Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home, Springdale, with the Rev. Scott Friend officiating. Burial was in National Cemetery at Fayetteville, Ark.

Mr. Erskin died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Fayetteville.

He was born Dec. 11, 1935, at Dighton, the son of Joseph Henry and Mattie Lee (Roberts) Erskin.

Mr. Erskin was a member of the VFW in Springdale, the Moose Lodge, American Welding Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Disabled American Veterans, National Boiler Inspection Board and St. Raphael's Catholic Church of Springdale, and was a second nuclear welder in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, whom he married on Sept. 20, 1957; a son, James Michael Erskin, Springdale; two daughters, Judith Michele Lathen, Meade, and Janet Lynn Mitchell, Springdale; his mother, Scott City; five brothers, Joe, Dick and Jerry Erskin, all of Garden City, Don Erskin, Great Bend, and Jeff Erskin, Cherryville; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dale Erskin.

Memorials are suggested to the Cardiac Care Unit at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Julia C. Hackerott Colby

Funeral for Julia C. Hackerott Colby, 90, of South Hutchinson, was to be 11 this morning at Mennonite Friendship Manor Chapel in South Hutchinson. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Osborne Kansas Cemetery. Dr. Charles J. McCallum will officiate.

Mrs. Colby died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Hutchinson Hospital.

She was born Aug. 27, 1911, at Waldo, the daughter of Gilbert and Grace Estella (Winder) Elliott. She graduated from Covert High School in 1930.

A Hutchinson resident since 1999, formerly living in Lawrence, Garden City and Placerville, Calif., she was a retired employee of Elliott Printing Co. and a nutritionist for Briar Hill Nursing Home, both in Garden City. She was a member of the Nazarene Church.

On June 18, 1933, she married Henry B. Hackerott. He died April 18, 1950. On May 9, 1971, she married Walter F. Colby at Garden City. He died in September 1986. She was also preceded in death by a son, Norman Estes Hackerott; and three brothers, Russell Van Buren Elliott, Arvis Nathan Elliott and Ray Gilbert Elliott.

Survivors include two sons, Marion Hackerott, San Angelo, Texas, and Neil Hackerott, Gardner; two brothers, Clair Austin Elliott, Oklahoma City, and William "Keith" Elliott, Natoma; a sister, Mabel Blossom Hutchcraft, Derby; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Mennonite Friendship Manor or Gideons International, both in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main St., Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Floyd 'Jack' Ludowese

SCOTT CITY - Vigil prayer service for Floyd "Jack" Ludowese, 77, will be 7 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City, with the Rev. David Kraus officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mr. Ludowese died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born June 14, 1924, at Graceville, Minn., the son of Joe and Elizabeth (Doll) Ludowese.

A Scott City resident since 1961, moving from Graceville, he was a retired farmer and elevator operator at Shallow Water Grain.

Mr. Ludowese was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lions Club and VFW Post No. 7773, all at Scott City, and the Kansas Grain and Feed Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

On Oct. 11, 1949, he married Vivian Kipp at Graceville. She survives. He is also survived by five sons, Gary, Thomas and Glen, all of Scott City, Peter, Kearney, Neb., and Richard, Sedgwick; four daughters, Kathy Huston, Douglas, Wyo., Jeanne Howard and Wanda Johnson, both of Scott City, and Peggy Harms, Deerfield; a brother, Joseph Ludowese, and a sister, Genevieve Billiet, both of Madison, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael Ludowese.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Scott County Emergency Medical Technicians, in care of the funeral home.

Gretchen Arnholz Florence

Gretchen Arnholz Florence, 58, of McPherson, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Hutchinson Hospital, Hutchinson.

She was born Nov. 29, 1943, at Wichita, the daughter of Samuel Robert and Helen Maxine (Harris) Arnholz.

Mrs. Florence worked as a secretary/administrative assistant at several companies, most recently working for the Lindsborg Chamber of Commerce.

A McPherson resident since 1998, she lived in Garden City from 1994 to 1998, at Emporia from 1990 to 1994 and in Wichita prior to 1990. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Friendship Club, both at McPherson, and Preceptor Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi at Wichita.

On Jan. 7, 1961, she married Jim Florence at Eldorado. He survives. She is also survived by her mother, of the home; a son, Christopher Florence, Wichita; a daughter, Michelle Florence, of the home; a brother, Robert Arnholz, Dallas; a sister, Margot Ernie, Wichita; and a grandson. She was preceded in death by a son, James R. Florence II.

A celebration of life service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, McPherson, with the Rev. J. David Worthen officiating. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday in McPherson Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Stockham Family Funeral Home, McPherson, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Reno County, both in care of the funeral home, 205 N. Chestnut St., McPherson, KS 67460.

Tracy Matthews

SATANTA - Tracy Matthews, 35, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Satanta District Hospital.

He was born Aug. 13, 1966, at New Orleans, the son of Roosevelt Alvin Bickham Jr. and Mable Lee Matthews.

A Satanta resident since 1998, moving from Garden City, he worked for the Cimarron Valley Railroad at Satanta. He enjoyed working and spending time with his brother on the job. He also enjoyed his family activities, video games, music, lifting weights, and playing horseshoes and basketball.

On Oct. 19, 2000, he married Mandy Koelzer at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Gregory Matthews, New Orleans; two stepsons, Jonathan and Jordan Penner, both of Satanta; his mother, New Orleans; two brothers, Cleveland Matthews, New Orleans, and Derrick Matthews, Satanta; his grandmother, Louise Banks, New Orleans; several nephews and nieces; and a special aunt, Barbara Matthews. He was preceded in death by his father; his grandmother, Bertha Matthews; and his grandfather, Harold Banks.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Ray Tweed officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested for the family and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Gordon Edward Penny

Funeral for Gordon Edward Penny, 83, of Phoenix, will be 5 p.m. Wednesday at Hansen Mortuary, Scottsdale, Ariz.

Mr. Penny, a former Garden City resident, died Friday, March 15, 2002.

The eldest of three brothers, he was born May 8, 1918, at Kingman. While attending high school in Liberal, he met Louise McClelland Wilson. They eloped shortly after graduation, July 5, 1936, nine days before her 18th birthday.

The couple moved to Garden City, where they ran Penny Cleaners for 34 years. In 1970, they sold the cleaners and traveled, spending the cold months in Winter Haven, Fla. During a visit to Yellowstone National Park, they liked it so much they decided to spend the next 10 summers working for the park. Eventually they settled full time in Islamorada, Fla., where he managed the Trading Post and later worked at Ace Hardware and Papa Joe's restaurant until moving to Phoenix in 1999.

In the Valley, he volunteered at Paradise Valley Hospital and continued his 40-plus years in AA. In Islamorada, he was a member of the Island Community Church. During World War II, he joined the U.S. Army as a radioman, private first class, and served in the Philippines.

He is survived by his brothers, Wayne Penny, San Juan Capistrano, Calif., and Jack Penny, Norman, Okla.; six children, Carolyn Marie Wilken of Dallas, Gordon Michael Penny of Lawrence, Ellis Ance "Don" Penny, Wheat Ridge, Colo., Jack Wayne Penny, Key Largo, Fla., Kathryn Gail Cline, Powhatan, Va., and Mary Frances Walker, Phoenix; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. His wife died in August 1997 after a battle with aplastic anemia.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation (1-800-747-2820).

Collin Upshaw

HOLCOMB - Graveside service for Collin Upshaw, 79, of Albuquerque, N.M., will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, N.M.

Mr. Upshaw, who was born in Holcomb and grew up there, died Sunday, March 17, 2002.

He is survived by his daughters, Joyce Wyatt, California, Jane Upshaw and Jodi Baca, both of Albuquerque; a son, Jeff Upshaw, Kansas; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 7 tonight at Fitzgerald & Son Funeral Directors, Albuquerque.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Presbyterian Hospice, 8100 Constitution Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108.

Olive J. Goertz

Graveside service for Olive J. Goertz, 93, of Lindsborg, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Valley View Cemetery, Roxbury, with the Rev. Rhonda Glenn officiating.

Mrs. Goertz died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Bethany Home in Lindsborg.

She was born Jan. 22, 1909, at Roxbury, the daughter of Hayden O. and Minte (Ash) Nichols.

A homemaker, she had resided in Lindsborg since 1989, moving from Garden City. She was a member of First Christian Church of Garden City.

On Nov. 12, 1930, she married Ervin Goertz at McPherson. He died Jan. 15, 1989. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Harold K. and Gordon J. Goertz; two brothers; and six sisters.

Survivors include a son, Leslie L. Goertz, Salina; a daughter, Marjorie Glenn, Garden City; two sisters, Lillian Becker, Lindsborg, and Pearl Huble, Buhl, Idaho; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 tonight at Hays-Christians Funeral Home, Lindsborg, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 tonight. Memorials are suggested to Bethany Home, in care of the funeral home, Box 386, Lindsborg, KS 67456.
