Jessie L. Perez

Vigil service for Jessie L. Perez, 83, of Garden City, will be 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lakin. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms as celebrant. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Mrs. Perez died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born April 23, 1919, at Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Bonifacio and Maria Briniones Lopez. The family moved to Deerfield when she was a child, and she attended schools there.

On May 5, 1934, she married Juan Perez at Coolidge. They lived in Coolidge for a short time before moving to Holcomb and then to Lakin in 1941. He died June 20, 1978. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Tony Perez; three brothers, Frank, Manuel and Gabino Lopez; and a granddaughter.

A Garden City resident since 1996, Mrs. Perez was a homemaker. She also had worked as a cook at Scotty's Cafe and once had her own day care center. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church of Lakin and the Altar Society, volunteered for the local Heart Association, and enjoyed bowling, crocheting, sewing and dancing.

She is survived by three sons, Val Perez and John Perez Jr., both of Lakin, and Richard Perez, Kendall; six daughters, Pat Avila, Garden City, Delilah Vincent, Forsythe, Mo., Ruby Escalada, Wichita, Nellie Bribiesca, Baldwin Park, Calif., Lupe Longoria and Teresa Perez, both of Lakin; three brothers, Eleno Lopez, Atchison, Paul Lopez, Garden City, and Ralph Lopez, Deerfield; a sister, Hope Lehman, Deerfield; 39 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are 4 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the Lakin Pride Committee, in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

Tony Wayne Kirby

ENSIGN - Tony Wayne Kirby, 58, of Ensign, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at the Dodge City Good Samaritan Center.

He was born Feb. 6, 1944, at Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Robert Lee and Bernice Friddle Crenshaw. He graduated from Montezuma High School in 1961.

On July 17, 1981, he married Fatemeh "Mary" Niei at Anaheim, Calif. They moved from Anaheim to Ensign in 1995. Mr. Kirby was a commercial painter and belonged to the Masonic Lodge.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John and James Kirby, both of Ensign; three daughters, Iris Kirby and April Kirby, both of Phoenix, and Nassim Kirby, Ensign; his father, Montezuma; a half brother, Randall Crenshaw, Dodge City; a sister, Marcia Lobban, Dallas; a half sister, Vicki Salmon, San Antonio, Texas; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gene Eshleman officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family, in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Hilda Gaede

INGALLS - Hilda Gaede, 86, of Ingalls, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born March 4, 1916, at LaCrosse, the daughter of Henry J. and Julia Soberish Wagner. She grew up in LaCrosse until moving to Garden City when she was 7.

On Sept. 30, 1939, she married Ruben Gaede at Wichita. Soon after their marriage, they moved to Ingalls. Her special interests were gardening, raising chickens, peacocks, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her husband died Oct. 11, 1996. She also was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, an infant daughter, three brothers and one sister.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Stork, Trenton, Mo.; a son, Jerry L. Gaede, Ingalls; a brother, Richard Wagner, Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Irene Roth, Bazine, and LaDonna McQueen, Alamosa, Colo.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with Alvin Smith, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Seventh-Day Adventist Church, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Florence McConchie

HUGOTON - Florence McConchie, 93, of Hugoton, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

She was born Dec. 15, 1908, at Plains, the daughter of George and Dora Bearce Howell.

A Hugoton resident since 1928, she had worked at the Hugoton Post Office, Fankhauser's Toggery and McDonalds Department Store. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women and was a past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, all at Hugoton.

She married Daniel Glen Webber. He died in 1947. In June 1949, she married Joe McConchie. He died in 1971. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and a grandson.

Survivors include a son, Alvin Webber, Bella Vista, Ark.; two daughters, Doris Backus, Borger, Texas, and Elsie Webber, San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Warren Howell, El Paso, Texas; a sister, Kay Applegate, Chapel Hill, N.C.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Nel Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Hugoton. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Pioneer Manor or the United Methodist Church of Hugoton, both in care of the funeral home, 423 S. Main, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Tonetta L. Bassham

Vigil service and rosary for Tonetta L. Bassham, 44, will be 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Bassham died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born March 3, 1958, at Garden City, the daughter of Tony G. and Josephine Olivarez Mesa. She graduated from Garden City High School in 1976.

A lifetime Garden City resident, she was a homemaker and also had worked at Dillons for about nine years. She belonged to St. Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed spending time with her family.

On Oct. 26, 1984, she married Michael R. Bassham at Garden City. He survives. She also is survived by two daughters, Andrea Nelson, Camp LeJeune, N.C., and Sara Bassham, of the home; two brothers, Reynaldo and Anthony Mesa, both of Garden City; five sisters, Maggie Silva, Rachelle Mesa, Gloria Najeda, Yolanda Clymer and Cindy Kottas, all of Garden City; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Tonetta L. Bassham Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Loyd E. Wright

Loyd E. Wright, 79, of Borger, Texas, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Golden Plains Community Hospital.

A native of Hoisington, he was born Oct. 21, 1922. He had lived in Borger for 52 years and was retired after working as an operator with Phillips Petroleum at Philtex for 34 years. He was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses.

On Nov. 1, 1947, he married Rosemary DeWitt at Scott City. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Donald Wright, Borger, and Randy Wright, Amarillo, Texas; four sisters, Verna Matyas, Beloit, Emaline Eichenhour, Doris Oshel and Lois Haunschild, all of Garden City; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Gross, on March 1, 2002.

Memorial service was 1:30 p.m. April 15 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, with Case Duggan and Ronnie Gandy officiating. Cremation took place under the direction of Brown Funeral Directors, Borger.

Louis D. Huckstadt

Funeral for Louis D. Huckstadt, 87, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. David Sweley officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Huckstadt died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Feb. 14, 1915, at Westmoreland, the son of Herman G. and VerNealia Caleson Huckstadt. The family moved to a farm north of Holcomb in 1919. He attended Holcomb schools, graduated from Holcomb High School in 1932 and attended Garden City Junior College for one year.

In 1947, he married Doris Newberry at Garden City.

Mr. Huckstadt was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Eagles Lodge, American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed music, ballroom dancing and teaching ballroom dancing.

Survivors include a son, Loren Huckstadt, Wichita; two sisters, Alice Rose Meredith, Garden City, and Cleo Bergner, Poteau, Okla.; a brother, Otto C. Huckstadt, San Diego; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter.

Visitation hours are 3 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Gracie B. Strickland

HUGOTON - Gracie B. Strickland, 72, of Hugoton, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

She was born Nov. 22, 1929, in Powell County, Ky., the daughter of Oliver and Nellie Sparks Hall.

On Nov. 22, 1946, she married Raymond Lee Strickland at Winchester, Ky. They moved to Stevens County in 1957. A homemaker, Mrs. Strickland also had craft stores in Hugoton for several years. She was a Cub Scout leader, belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary and was a former member of the Jaycee Jaynes.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Linn Wayne Strickland and Edward Lee Strickland, both of Hugoton; a stepson, F. Ray Strickland, Indianapolis; two brothers, Herman Hall and Ottis Hall, both of Stanton, Ky.; two sisters, Hattie Bailey, Wichita, and Reola Thorpe, Stanton; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Ruth and Ann.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating.

Friends may sign the register 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Cancer Fund, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.
