Grace M. Smith

DIGHTON - Grace M. Smith, 69, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Protection Valley Manor in Protection.

She was born May 1, 1932, in Lane County, the daughter of John Jacob and Ruth Mildred West Lawrence. She grew up in Lane County and graduated from Dighton High School in 1950.

On Feb. 25, 1951, she married Jim Smith at Dighton. After their marriage, she moved to Kentucky and then returned to Lane County while her husband served overseas in the military. After his discharge from the service, they moved to Denver and to Broomfield, where she worked as a secretary for Burt Chevrolet and then for an insurance company. They then moved to Frisco, Colo., where they ran a service station and a wrecker service. They later moved to McAlister, Okla. After her divorce, she returned to Kansas and had lived at Scott City, Garden City and Protection.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Immanuel Southern Baptist Church in Scott City. Her special interests were her nieces and nephews.

She is survived by two brothers, Elmer Lawrence, Ontario, Ore., and Roy Lawrence, Fall River; and four sisters, Mary Gross, Lockburie, Colo., Nina Sherman, Wichita, Virginia Messenger, Dighton, and LaReta Garnier, Springfield, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jim and Cecil Lawrence; and two sisters, Thelma King and Venna Jester.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Revs. Kerry Grogan and Mike Grogan officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation hours are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to Protection Valley Manor or First Christian Church, both in care of the funeral home.

Esther M. Erker

Esther M. Erker, 90, of Inman and formerly of Garden City, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Pleasant View Home in Inman.

She was born Sept. 13, 1911, at St. Marks, the daughter of John Martin and Elizabeth Agnes Cordell Simon. She attended grade schools in St. Marks and attended Red Hill School in Reno County.

A homemaker, she had lived in Inman since 1973, moving from Colorado Springs, Colo. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church at McPherson and was a former member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City. She also belonged to the Altar Society of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

On Nov. 23, 1931, she married Henry George Erker at Wellington. He died Oct. 14, 1986. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Clifford; five brothers, Albert, Robert, Roman, Arthur and Urban Simon; and two sisters, Mildred Simon and Marjorie Ast.

She is survived by two daughters, Dolores M. Willems, McPherson, and Dorothy A. Purdy, Las Vegas; two sons, Donald R. Erker, Hutchinson, and Arthur A. Erker, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 17 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, McPherson, with the Rev. Paul Oborny officiating. Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. James Baker officiating.

Visitation hours are 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m., followed by the rosary at 7:10 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, McPherson. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph's Catholic Church of McPherson, St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City or the American Heart Association, all in care of Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home, 222 W. Euclid, McPherson, KS 67460.

Harold D. 'Pete' Warfield

INGALLS - Funeral for Harold D. "Pete" Warfield, 74, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ingalls Community Bible Church, with the Revs. Richard Deimund and Stuart Pederson officiating. Burial will be in Ingalls Cemetery.

Mr. Warfield died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Trinity Manor Nursing Home in Dodge City.

He was born April 9, 1928, at Ingalls, the son of Ivan Eugene and Mary Irene Estes Warfield. He grew up in Ingalls, graduating from Ingalls High School.

On Jan. 23, 1951, he married Fleeta Belle Williams at Cimarron. After their marriage, they moved to Ingalls. He was employed with the Gray County Highway Department as a road grader operator for 36 years, retiring in 1991.

Mr. Warfield enjoyed hunting, sports, rodeo and horses and also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and visiting with others in the community.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Ronnda Singhisen and Kim Schmidt, both of Ingalls, and Genene Simmons, Garden City; two sisters, Mattie "Madge" Immroth, Cimarron, and Betty Jean "Sis" Koehn, Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gerald Warfield.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Manor Special Care Unit, in care of the funeral home.

James Leroy Porter

Graveside service for James Leroy Porter, 87, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Lincoln City Cemetery, Lincoln, with the Rev. Raymond Raley officiating.

Mr. Porter died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

He was born Feb. 5, 1915, in Lincoln County, the son of Andrew and Ella Fancher Porter. He graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University and Emporia State Teachers College and attended Fort Hays State University during the summers.

A Garden City resident since 1982, moving from Salina, he had been a teacher at Garfield Elementary School in Garden City for many years. He was a member of Plymell Union Church of Garden City.

On Feb. 5, 1942, he married Cleo Locke at Salina. She survives. He also is survived by a brother, Dean Porter of Chapman. He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Plymell Union Church or the Center for Basic Cancer Research, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Walter E. Zemp

Walter E. Zemp, 77, of Paola and formerly of Salina, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at North Point Care Center.

He was born Nov. 22, 1924, at Ness City, the son of Edward Walter and Sadie Cranston Zemp. He received his formal education at Ness City, graduating in 1942, and later attended Salt City Junior College.

On June 10, 1947, he married Treva Nadine Wilkinson at Winfield.

Mr. Zemp began working in Wichita for Beech Aircraft in 1967 as a fabricator, then was transferred to Salina where he worked until his retirement from Raytheon Corp. in April 1994. He attended First Covenant Church in Salina and Paola Assembly of God Church.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Dwight Zemp, Castle Rock, Colo., and Dean Zemp, Garden City; two daughters, Arlene Cromwell, Burnsville, Minn., and Marilyn Roberts, Paola; two sisters, Ann Wilkinson, Ponca City, Okla., and Mildred Isbell, Winfield; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, George and Charles.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Assembly of God Church, Paola, with burial in Osawatomie Cemetery in Osawatomie.

Visitation hours are 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson & Son Funeral Home, Paola. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the church or Habitat for Humanity, both in care of the funeral home, 305 N. Pearl, Paola, KS 66071.

Wade W. Elliott

HUGOTON - Wade W. Elliott, 90, of Hugoton, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the Morton County Care Center in Elkhart, where he had been a resident since August 1998.

He was born Jan. 6, 1912, in Stevens County, the son of Wilmot Franklin and Mae Loucks Elliott.

A lifetime resident of Stevens County, he was a longtime farmer and rancher. He belonged to the Christian Church and was a charter member of the VFW, both at Hugoton, was a member of the Southwest Cattlemen's Association, Farm Bureau and Southwest Kansas Royalty Owners Association, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

On Dec. 26, 1946, he married Gertrude Purcell at Hutchinson. She survives. He is also survived by two sisters, Doris Sandefur, Cottage Grove, Ore., and Lois Jones, Waller, Texas; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gereald and Marvin Elliott; and a stepson, Billie J. Wiley.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Jeff Aenk officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Cancer Fund, both in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Larry E. Ryan

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Larry E. Ryan, 61, of Scott City, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Scott City Middle School, with Erwin Mitchell and Robert E. Seger officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mr. Ryan died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Hays Medical Center in Hays.

He was born Dec. 23, 1940, at Huntington Park, Calif., the son of Glen E. and Helen J. Hopper Ryan.

A lifetime resident of Scott County and Scott City, he spent many years farming before turning his hobby of computers into a business, Larry's Experienced Resources, in Scott City. He was a member of Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He enjoyed his grandchildren and church activities, along with other hobbies, including motorcycles and airplanes.

He is survived by his wife, Karen A. Ryan, whom he married on Sept. 17, 1960, in Tucumcari, N.M.; three sons, Aaron Todd Ryan, St. Louis, Bryan Troy Ryan, Orem, Utah, and Chad Eric Ryan, Scott City; three daughters, Denise Craig and Mershon Lee Ryan, both of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Linette Little, Katy, Texas; his parents, Scott City; two brothers, Charles Ryan, Scott City, and Dean Ryan, Garden City; five sisters, Glenda Glenn, Odenville, Ala., Susan Shaff, Cedar Vale, Janet Unruh, Dodge City, Tamara Brewer, Parker, Colo., and Sharlyn Ryan, Avondale, Ariz.; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jay Dee Ryan.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials to the Larry Ryan Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Christopher Michael Crawford

Funeral for Christopher Michael Crawford, 24, a former Garden City resident, was to be 11 this morning at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary, Glendale, Ariz. Burial was to follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Crawford died Sunday, April 14, 2002.

He was born Oct. 27, 1977, at Wichita, the son of Hilton Crawford and Sandra Smith. A 1996 graduate of Garden City High School, he attended Garden City Community College. He enjoyed playing football and softball, working on cars, and spending time with his family and friends.

On Feb. 23, 2001, he married Angelina Pacheco at Salamanca, N.Y. They moved to Phoenix in March 2001.

He is survived by his wife; a stepdaughter, Alexis Guerrero, Phoenix; two daughters, Klasee and Kaylee Crawford, both of Garden City; his mother, Garden City; his father, Wichita; three sisters, Jenny Bradford, Dodge City, Charmain Smith, Garden City, and Dominique Crawford, Wichita; and two brothers, Shadrach Smith and Michael Green Jr., both of Garden City. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Melvin and Pat Smith, and Hilton and Johnnie Lee Crawford.
