Tiney Dee Tyler

Tiney Dee Tyler, 74, a former area resident, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at his home in Kingman.

He was born Nov. 28 , 1927, at Coahoma, Texas, the son of Cleve and Clara Warren Tyler.

When he was 19, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Japan as a sergeant with 40th Communications Squadron C. He was a telephone and telegraph lineman and received the Victory Medal, World War II and the Occupation Medal, Japan.

On Jan. 21, 1963, he married Patricia B. Clark at Tulsa, Okla. They lived in Syracuse, Coolidge, Johnson City and Ulysses, and he worked for numerous farmers, ranchers and cattle feeding operations. He had been a Kingman resident since 1999.

In addition to being a telephone lineman, he enjoyed careers working on oil drilling rigs in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico and also had worked as a welder. After retirement in 1990, he enjoyed rodeos, fishing, baseball, wrestling and watching sky diving.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Jerry Don Janzen, Robert Harris Janzen and Steven Mark Janzen, and three daughters, Donna Dee Johnson, Ricci Rena Janzen and Regina Lynn Mitchell, all of Tulsa; two stepdaughters, Georgia Sue Elliott, Jackson, Tenn., and Lenore Kay Johnson, Denison, Texas; a brother, Lenny Lee Tyler, Bay City, Texas; 10 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy; a brother, C.T.; and a grandson.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Manter, with the Rev. Kevin Seuser officiating. Burial, with military rites conducted, will follow in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.

Virginia L. Hamann

Funeral for Virginia L. Hamann, 78, of Perry, Okla., will be 10 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church, Perry, with the Rev. Walter Wehmeier officiating. Burial will follow in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Hamann died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Perry Green Valley Nursing Home.

She was born March 28, 1924, at Mulhall, Okla., the daughter of Frank and Hazel Barker Pitts, and was reared by her paternal grandparents, Steve and Cora Pitts. She was a graduate of Billings (Okla.) High School.

On March 28, 1942, she married Rienhold Henry Hamann at San Bernardino, Calif. He preceded her in death, as did her parents and grandparents.

Mrs. Hamann worked as a bookkeeper at O.J. Moore Chevrolet and Gilliland Chevrolet from 1954 to 1962, operated the Noble County Tag Agency from 1963 to 1974 and retired from the U.S. Census Bureau in 1985. Active in state and local Republican politics, she was one of the charter members of the Bellmon Belles during Henry Bellmon's first campaign for governor in 1962. She belonged to Christ Lutheran Church.

She is survived by two sons, Dwight R. Hamann of Perry and Steve E. Hamann, Garden City; and four grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, both in care of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home, 1010 N. Seventh St., Perry, OK 73077.

James Homer Davis

SYRACUSE - James Homer Davis, 87, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in Syracuse.

He was born May 12, 1914, on his Grandma Jennie Hutchinson's farm south of Syracuse in rural Hamilton County, the son of Howard M. and Lillie P. Hutchinson Davis. He attended school in Coolidge.

Mr. Davis farmed wheat and milo and raised cattle, along with racehorses, before semi-retiring in 1995. He attended the Wesleyan Church in Syracuse, was a member of a racehorse association, and a former member of the Hamilton County Fair Board and the Co-op. He especially enjoyed growing and giving away watermelon, cantaloupe and pumpkins, and also enjoyed singing, writing poems and collecting arrowheads and pennies.

He is survived by two brothers, Delmont Davis, Peel, Ark., and Clarence Davis, Baytown, Colo.; five sisters, Margaret Harper, Helen Patton and Dimple Claudene Schmidt, all of Syracuse, Ruth Schmidt of Milton and Edna Belle Cook, Ulysses; and 24 nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ralph Davis; and a nephew.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at the Wesleyan Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Rod Collins officiating. Graveside committal service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.

Visitation hours are until 8 MDT tonight and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. MDT Friday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the Hamilton County Extended Care Facility or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Valentine Bloyd

LAKIN - Memorial service for Valentine Bloyd, 84, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Ray Raley and Carley Hazelton officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Mrs. Bloyd died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

She was born Feb. 14, 1918, at Fairbury, Neb., the daughter of Lester E. and Myrtle Swartz Dickerson. She grew up and attended schools in Fairbury.

On Dec. 31, 1933, she married Donald E. Bloyd at Ellis, Neb. They made their home on a farm in 1950 before moving to Mahaska where she worked as a switchboard operator for the telephone company. In 1952, they moved to St. Francis where she worked at a Ben Franklin 5 & 10 store. They moved to Lakin in 1955, where she worked for a number of years at a drug store and then for Pioneer Telephone Co., retiring in 1983.

Mrs. Bloyd was a member of First Baptist Church, Lakin Bowling Association and Rising Star Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed bowling, crossword puzzles, birds and traveling.

Her husband died Jan. 27, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Donald Lee Bloyd; and a stepsister, Leola Snyder.

Survivors include two sons, Steven J. Bloyd, Great Bend, and Larry R. Bloyd, Las Animas, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Kearny County Home Health or the American Heart Association, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

Catherine L. Base

Catherine L. Base, 59, a former Garden City resident, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at her daughter's home in Decatur, Ark.

She was born Dec. 3, 1942, at Garden City, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Gatlin Bayer.

A resident of Independence since July 2000, moving from Decatur, she was a homemaker. She belonged to St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City.

On Jan. 5, 1963, she married Clayton Base at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Rodney Base, Holcomb; three daughters, Sheryl Finley, Snyder, Colo., Staci Brinkley and Carol Owens, both of Decatur; five brothers, Donald Bayer, Oklahoma, Marty Bayer, Arkansas, Adam, Lester and Rex Bayer, all of Kansas; five sisters, Patti Quint, Arizona, Mary Burrell, Arkansas, Karen Lubbers and Toni Martin, both of Kansas, and Sharon Moran of Virginia; and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and sister.

Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the N.A.R.T.I. Cancer Facility of Bentonville, Ark., in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St., or in care of Decatur State Bank, Box 38, Decatur, AR 72722.

Maxine Porterfield Walters

Funeral for Maxine Porterfield Walters, 70, of Boonville, Mo., will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Markland-Gardner Funeral Home, New Franklin, Mo.

Mrs. Walters died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Boonville.

She was born Nov. 28, 1931, at Stratford, Texas. On March 6, 1993, she married Sid Walters at Townsend, Tenn.

A former Garden City resident, she was a past president of the Kansas CowBelles.

Memorials are suggested to the Howard County Hospice, in care of the funeral home, Box 126, New Franklin, MO 65274.

Iola M. Ladner

Funeral for Iola M. Ladner, 90, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Ladner died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born Oct. 29, 1911, at Liberal, the daughter of Chester and Lelah Utz Black. The family moved to Satanta in 1920, and she graduated from Satanta High School.

A Garden City resident since 1942, she was a homemaker and enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and being with her grandchildren. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the WSCS Circle of the church, was a life member and past matron (1951) of Order of Eastern Star No. 359, belonged to the Senior Center of Finney County and served as a volunteer at St. Catherine Hospital and Garden Valley Retirement Village.

On June 4, 1930, she married Archie B. Ladner at Garden City. He died Sept. 17, 1989. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Forrest Lee Ladner; two brothers, Lucine and Arthur Black; and a sister, Katherine Black.

Survivors include two sons, Rex and Max Ladner, both of Garden City; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Garden City Community College Nursing Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Logusta Dutcher

HUGOTON - Logusta Dutcher, 84, of Hugoton, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

She was born Sept. 24, 1918, at Dalton, Neb., the daughter of Harvey L. and Orrie Flynt Heizer. She graduated from nursing school in Hastings, Neb., and started the nursing program in Waco, Texas.

On Jan. 4, 1942, she married Robert C. Dutcher at Dallas. They moved to Hugoton in 1950. A registered nurse, she had worked in the Hugoton Clinic and for area doctors for many years.

Mrs. Dutcher was a homeroom grandmother for a first-grade class, with the children calling her "Grandma Gussie." At times, she also had worked as a school nurse. She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, china painting, reading and gardening.

She is survived by a son, Robert M. Dutcher, Grants, N.M.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Nel Holmes officiating.

Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.
