L.A. 'Lefty' Horn

DIGHTON - L.A. "Lefty" Horn, 75, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, from injuries suffered in a fire at his home in Dighton.

He was born March 7, 1927, at Sterling, the son of Lloyd M. and Gladys Deborah Selfridge Horn. He grew up on a farm in Rice County and attended Union 2 Country School.

After serving in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to Sterling and worked in the oil fields. In 1950, he moved to Lane County and worked on farms for Jake Selfridge and Ross Jasper. In 1960, he became the owner-operator of Lefty's Soil Service which he ran until retiring in 1996.

Mr. Horn attended the United Methodist Church and was a life member of VFW Post No. 6438, both at Dighton. His special interests were hunting, fishing, watching and supporting the men's softball team he sponsored and, in later years, being part of his grandchildren's activities.

On Jan. 1, 1950, he married Jeannine Wilson at Hutchinson. She survives. He also is survived by a daughter, Toni Molina, Albuquerque, N.M.; three sons, Craig Horn, Lyons, Larry Horn, Belton, Mo., and Lloyd Horn, Dighton; a brother, Elton Horn, San Diego; a sister, Nellie Ramsey, Douglass, Wyo.; six grandchildren; and two stepgranddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Horn.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 190 of Dighton.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or VFW Post No. 6438, both in care of the funeral home.

Charles Hickok

ULYSSES - Vigil service for Charles Hickok, 80, of Fowler, will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Fowler. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Zino Ye Swe officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. Friday in Ulysses Cemetery.

Mr. Hickok died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Meade District Hospital in Meade.

He was born Jan. 22, 1922, at Halstead, the son of Charles William and Mary Frances McGillivray Hickok. He graduated from Ulysses High School in 1940 and from Chanute Junior College in 1942.

Mr. Hickok had been a Fowler resident since 1984, moving from Ulysses, and was a retired plant operator for Mesa Petroleum. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church of Fowler, a board member of the SW Kansas Area Council on Aging, belonged to the SW Kansas Gem and Mineral Society, and the Circulator and Whirlaway Square Dancers Club, was a former 4-H leader in Grant County and served in the Army Air Corp during World War II.

On April 7, 1947, he married Jeanne K. St. Lawrence at Ulysses. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Charles Michael Hickok, Phoenix; three daughters, Janice May Hickok, Tulsa, Okla., Evelyn Annette Fink, Ulysses, and Linda Jo Hickok, Belle Plaine; and a brother, Donald Hickok, Ulysses.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade. Memorials are suggested to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation or Grant County Museum, both in care of the mortuary, Box F, Meade, KS 67864.

Mary Barbara Rowton

LEOTI - Vigil service for Mary Barbara Rowton, 93, will be 7 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marienthal. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Marienthal.

Mrs. Rowton died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.

She was born Sept. 1, 1908, in Finney County, the daughter of John and Theresia Goetzenberger Eder.

A homemaker, she had been a Wichita County resident since 1912. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary Altar Society and Better Homemaker E.H.U., all at Marienthal, and St. Anthony Catholic Church of Leoti. She had been a sewing leader for Wichita County 4-H, was active in Wichita County school events, and was an excellent seamstress and cook.

On Oct. 4, 1933, she married George Allen Rowton at Marienthal. He died Oct. 25, 1958, at Scott City. She also was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth and Keith; three sisters; six brothers; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She is survived by a son, Jim Rowton, Leoti; three daughters, Georgia Griem, Leoti, Adeline Mays, Ulysses, and Lyla Kay Burch, Hartshorne, Okla.; a sister, Florence Daubert, Scott City; 25 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 5:30 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to Greeley County Hospital or the church, both in care of the funeral home.

Louise L. Hawkins

Louise L. Hawkins, 77, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at her home in Garden City.

She was born Jan. 7, 1925, in Rock County, Wis., the daughter of Kaspar and Rosa Greub Trutman. She grew up in Brodhead, Wis., and graduated from high school there. She then went to Spencerian College in Milwaukee. After her schooling, she started working at Green County Bank in Brodhead.

On Nov. 3, 1945, she married Robert E. Hawkins at Janesville, Wis. They then moved to a farm in Davis, Ill. In 1951, they returned to Brodhead and she again worked at Green County Bank. In 1956, they moved to Boulder, Colo., where she worked at First National Bank and later with Arapaho National Bank. In 1969, they moved to a ranch at Powell, Wyo., where she was employed with American National Bank.

A Garden City resident since 1996, Mrs. Hawkins was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Garden City. She also belonged to American Legion Women's Auxiliary Unit No. 26 of Powell. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, bird watching and being with her grandchildren.

Her husband died June 29, 1992. She also was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by a daughter, Jeanne Hurst, Boulder; two sons, James Hawkins, Garden City, and Joseph Hawkins, Santa Maria, Calif.; a brother, John Trutman, Brodhead; two sisters, Kate Frye, Lockwood, Mo., and Rose Cronau, Cederville, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Private family services are planned. Memorials are suggested to American Legion Women's Auxiliary Unit No. 26, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Barry R. Chaffin

ULYSSES - Funeral for Barry R. Chaffin, 65, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Mr. Chaffin died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at his home in Ulysses.

He was born July 25, 1936, at Coalinga, Calif., the son of Elvis Andrew and Marnie Louise Weaver Chaffin.

A former resident of Syracuse and Johnson City, he owned and operated the Top Hat Tavern and Cafe in Johnson City until his retirement.

On Dec. 25, 1982, he married Maudie Jensen Twilleger at Johnson City. She survives. He also is survived by five daughters, Patricia Carrillo, Fort Worth, Texas, Brenda R. Chaffin, Satanta, Lora Michelle Combs, Colorado Springs, Colo., Sandra Post, Manter, and Shannon Morris, Johnson City; a stepdaughter, Sherry Twilleger, Ulysses; six stepsons, Dennis Twilleger, Denver, Jerry Twilleger, Dumas, Texas, Randy Twilleger, Canon City, Colo., John Twilleger, Ark City, Bill Twilleger, Ulysses, and Mark Twilleger, Johnson City; two brothers, Elvis Chaffin Jr., Lucerne, Calif., and Tommy Walsh, National City, Calif.; a sister, Kathleen Linsley, San Diego; 33 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Thomas Walsh; his stepmother, Betty Chaffin; and a brother, Patrick Walsh.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Barry R. Chaffin Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Duane C. Millsap

SYRACUSE - Graveside service for Duane C. Millsap, 78, will be 10:30 a.m. MDT Friday in Syracuse Cemetery.

Mr. Millsap died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at his home in Syracuse.

He was born Nov. 19, 1923, at Syracuse, the son of David and Frances Rogers Millsap. A 1941 graduate of Syracuse High School, he was a member of the undefeated high school football team. Following graduation, he attended Colorado A & M (C.S.U.) in Fort Collins, Colo.

Mr. Millsap was a cattleman and irrigation farmer and was the owner/operator of a dairy in the 1960s on the Arkansas River Valley until his retirement in 1991.

He enjoyed welding brass sculptures and other types of crafts and also enjoyed playing his bass guitar with Billy and Loretta Whitefield. In January 2000, he became a member of Southern Baptist Church in Syracuse. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and attending the men's fellowship breakfast on Saturday mornings. He also belonged to the Odd Fellows Lodge.

On June 8, 1946, he married Rosemary Urton at Syracuse. She survives. He also is survived by two children, Cal Duane Millsap, Liberal, and Jan Munyon, Los Angeles; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Evelyn Millsap Manning.

Memorials are suggested to the Southern Baptist Church Building Fund, in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Sharon Sue Heinrich

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Sharon Sue Heinrich, 59, will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mrs. Heinrich died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

She was born Aug. 5, 1942, at Garden City, the daughter of Ovid Henry and Buehla Thomas.

A lifetime resident of Scott City, she worked at Duckwalls for more than seven years before opening her own store, Craft & Gift Shoppe in Scott City. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

On Nov. 19, 1957, she married Gale D. Heinrich at Scott City. He died Feb. 21, 1993, at Garden City. She also was preceded in death by her mother and a grandson.

Survivors include three sons, Mike Heinrich, Scott City, Alan Heinrich, Wichita, and Davey Heinrich, Lansing; four daughters, Tamela Turley, Julie Ferrell, Lisa Buffington and Misty Heinrich, all of Scott City; and three brothers, Terry Henry and Willis Johnson, both of Oklahoma, and Randy Henry, Harmon, Okla.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials to the Sharon S. Heinrich Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Mary Esther Martinez

Vigil service for Mary Esther Martinez, 79, will be 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Martinez died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Methodist Heart Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

She was born Dec. 6, 1922, at Copeland, the daughter of Ignacio G. and Josefina Mesa Valenzuela. She grew up in Copeland and graduated from Copeland High School.

On Nov. 22, 1942, she married Fred Martinez Jr. at Garden City. They farmed for many years in Finney County. She also worked and retired as a school cook for USD 363 Holcomb public schools. A strong advocate of formal and informal education, she was active in the schools of her children.

Mrs. Martinez was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and VFW Auxiliary. She was active in various prayer groups through her church and enjoyed embroidery, quilting, reading and cooking for her large family.

Her husband died April 19, 1996. She also was preceded in death by her mother; a son, Fred Martinez III; a granddaughter; five brothers, Rudy, Al, Carlos, Victor and Fransisco Valenzuela; and two sisters, Josephine Martinez and Dora Ramos.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Martinez, San Antonio, and Robert Martinez, Tulsa, Okla.; three daughters, Yvonne Martinez, Tulsa, Lydia Smith, Garden City, and Adela Martinez, Plano, Texas; her father, Garden City; four sisters, Hope Garcia, Houston, Consuelo Dean and Elvira Crocker, both of Wichita, and Ana Maria Valenzuela, Redwood City, Calif.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are noon to 6 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
