Lorain S. Mastel

LEOTI - Vigil service and rosary for Lorain S. Mastel, 73, will be 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marienthal. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial will be in Marienthal Cemetery.

Mrs. Mastel died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

She was born Oct. 15, 1928, at Spearville, the daughter of Edward and Gertrude Nienaber Knobbe. The family moved to Chicago when she was a child, living there for about a year before moving to Marienthal. She attended Marienthal Grade School and Leoti High School. She later attended Sacred Heart Catholic College in Wichita and Emporia State Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate. She then returned to Wichita County where she taught for four years.

On June 7, 1950, she married Robert F. Mastel at Marienthal. They moved to Faith, S.D., where they lived before returning to Marienthal in 1963. They moved to Leoti in 1993.

A homemaker, Mrs. Mastel also worked as a substitute teacher for several years. She enjoyed wheat weaving, painting, crocheting, quilting and other handiwork. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella and volunteered at the thrift shop in Leoti.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, Edward Mastel, Rose Hill, Richard and Scott Mastel, both of Marienthal; three daughters, Debra Mastel, Wichita, Nancee Knierim, Towanda, and Roberta Musgrove, Missouri City, Texas; two brothers, Ed Knobbe, Fallbrook, Calif., and Arden Knobbe, Baton Rouge, La.; two sisters, Mary Jane Berning and Lorrel Knobbe, both of Wichita; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

Lucille Delberta Cryer

Mrs. Cryer was born Sept. 9, 1912, at Liberal, the daughter of Joseph Wilson and Kathleen Gertrude Parnham Titus, and had spent most of her life in this area.

On July 25, 1931, she married Virgil Herman Cryer at Liberal. He died Dec. 15, 1990. She also was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Bernice McCune, Wilma Brewer and Velma Smith; and a grandson.

Mrs. Cryer was a member of First Christian Church of Hugoton and the Social Order of the Beauceant of Liberal. A homemaker, she enjoyed her family activities, was active in the church and also enjoyed gardening and sewing.

She is survived by a son, Gary Lea Cryer, Wichita; a daughter, Shirley Yvonne Austin, Centralia; a brother, Alton Joseph Titus, Arvada, Colo.; three sisters, Neva Hardin, Carmichael, Calif., Zilda Harris, Rogers, Ark., and Vuleen Lofland, Chickasha, Okla.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, with the Rev. Jeff Aenk officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Fund, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

LeRoy Roth

Vigil service for LeRoy Roth, 60, will be 8 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Roth died Monday, April 1, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Aug. 18, 1941, at Garden City, the son of John J. and Catherine Komlofske Roth. He grew up in the Deerfield and Holcomb areas and attended Holcomb High School.

Mr. Roth worked at Western Alfalfa and later began working for Harding Glass Company, a business he bought in 1986 and renamed Roth Glass & Framing. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a third and fourth degree member of Knights of Columbus No. 2795. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and golf and especially enjoyed his grandchildren's activities.

On Nov. 23, 1960, he married Linda Kay Quint at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Steven L. and Timothy T. Roth, both of Garden City; two daughters, Kerry S. Black, Holcomb, and Lynnette R. Cox, Olathe; two brothers, Jerry Roth, Holcomb, and John Roth, Lamar, Colo.; two sisters, Florence Savolt, Garden City, and Lucille Johnson, Russell; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dorothy Wigner.

Visitation hours are until 6:30 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the St. Mary School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Martha Lopez

Vigil service for Martha Lopez, 51, of Garden City, will be 6 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Carlos Garcia-Pena officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Lopez died Monday, April 1, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Feb. 23, 1951, at Durango, Mexico, the daughter of Leandro and Manuela Salazar Solis.

In 1972, she married Jose J. Lopez at Durango. After their marriage, they moved to Santa Barbara, Calif., where they lived until moving to Garden City in 1975.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a Cursillista. Her hobbies were working in her flower and vegetable gardens, sewing, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren and family.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Tony Lopez, and a daughter, Lily Lopez, both of Garden City; five brothers, Antonio Solis, Miguel Solis and Jose Solis, all of Durango, Gregorio Leandro Solis, Santa Barbara, and Javier Solis, Denver; seven sisters, Carlota Solis, Magdalena Rodriguez, Cuca Solis and Luz Solis, all of Durango, Francisca Ruiz, Bertha Magana and Carmen Solis, all of Santa Barbara; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and two sisters.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Martha Lopez Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Rex Franklin Miller

SATANTA - Memorial service for Rex Franklin Miller, 86, of Satanta, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Jeff Miller officiating. Private family burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.

Mr. Miller died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Wheatridge Park Care Center, Liberal, where he had been a resident.

He was born Sept. 9, 1915, at Sand Fork, W.Va., the son of Frank Earl and Pruda S. Richards Miller.

Mr. Miller was a gas measurement engineer for United Producing Co. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, a board member of Dudley Township Cemetery and a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts for many years, all at Satanta. He took the Scouts to Philmount Scout Camp in New Mexico and also taught a survival course.

He also belonged to Masonic Lodge No. 406 of Hugoton and was a ham radio operator for more than 50 years. He enjoyed his family activities and fly fishing.

On Aug. 15, 1934, he married Thelma Mae Weaver at Oakland, Md. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Rex Franklin Miller Jr., Mounds, Okla.; a daughter, Patricia Balzer, Hooker, Okla.; two sisters, Avis Harris, St. Cloud, Fla., and Mary Jo Burns, Orlando, Fla.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the Boy Scouts, United Methodist Church of Satanta or Happy Agers of Satanta and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value at Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Maulcie Jones Timken

CIMARRON - Funeral for Maulcie Jones Timken, 85, of Cimarron, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Cimarron, with the Rev. Richard Deimund officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.

Mrs. Timken died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at The Shepherd's Center in Cimarron.

She was born March 5, 1917, at Glenn in Carter County, Okla., the daughter of Henry Oscar Jones and Sarah Alice Brewer. She grew up around Springer, Okla., until moving with her family in 1932 to Mannsville, Okla., where she graduated from high school in 1933.

She met John Timken at the Ardmore (Okla.) Army Air Base, and they were married on Sept. 30, 1944, at Ardmore. In 1946, they moved to a farm north of Cimarron, and in 1992, they moved into Cimarron.

A homemaker, Mrs. Timken was a charter member of First Baptist Church of Cimarron.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Roger Timken, Dighton, and Philip Timken, North Newton; a brother, Charis Jones, Ardmore; two sisters, Lavada Shields, Naples, Fla., and Patsy Shields, Ardmore; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son; and a sister, Janelle Greener.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Cimarron or The Shepherd's Center, both in care of the funeral chapel.

Marjorie Marie Cannady

SYRACUSE - Memorial service for Marjorie Marie Reed Cannady, 86, will be 2 p.m. MST Tuesday at First Christian Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Mike Lewis officiating. Graveside inurnment service will be 11 a.m. CST April 13 in Hartford Cemetery, Hartford.

Mrs. Cannady died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.

She was born Sept. 17, 1915, at Sterling, the daughter of Earnest Delosse "E.D." and Grace Rue Bell Reed. When she was 2, the family moved to Keenesburg, Colo. In 1933, she graduated from Prospect Valley High School, a rural country school in Weld County, Colo.

In 1934, she moved to Coolidge where she worked at a local gas station during the Depression. While living in Hartford from 1940 to 1979, she attended Emporia Beauty School in Emporia, graduating in 1941. She then worked at the creamery in Ottawa, on a milk route hauling 13 cans. From 1945 to 1975, she was a bookkeeper for Kansas Soya Products Elevator in Hartford. In 1979, she moved to Las Cruces, N.M. She moved to Syracuse in 1988 to be near her family. She became a resident of Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in Syracuse this year.

Mrs. Cannady was a member of First Christian Church of Syracuse. She enjoyed visiting with her friends at the nursing home, doing jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, reading, crocheting, letter writing, traveling in a motor home to and from Yuma, Ariz., and collecting red bird figurines.

On Jan. 21, 1952, she married Loren Herrelson at Bentonville, Ark. He died in August 1972. On July 23, 1979, she married Ransom Cannady at Parsons. He died in February 1988. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by two stepchildren, Pete Cannady and Marie Howard, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Eldon Delosse "Bub" Reed, Syracuse; a nephew; a niece; and several stepgrandchildren and cousins.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home & Monuments, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Stacy Steward

Vigil service for Stacy Steward, 44, will be 7:30 tonight at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr as celebrant. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday in Resthaven Memorial Park, Shawnee, Okla.

Mr. Steward died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

He was born May 31, 1957, at Shawnee, the son of Clarence Wallace "Jim" and Betty Godwin Steward. He attended school in Dale, Okla., and graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1979.

After his schooling, he did crop consulting in Texas until moving to Garden City in 1982. He was a crop consultant for Maxima Corporation for four years before becoming owner and operator of his own crop consulting firm in 1986.

Mr. Steward was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Sand & Sage Rifle Club, Ducks Unlimited, National Alliance of Independent Crop Consultants and the Kansas Agricultural Rural Leadership Class IV, and was a founding member and past president of the Kansas Association of Independent Crop Consultants. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, gardening and traveling.

On Nov. 7, 1987, he married Peg Diamond at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Kelsey and Megan Steward, both of the home; his mother, Betty Lowrey, Alamo, Texas; and two brothers, Bruce Steward, Overland Park, and Scott Steward, Shawnee, Okla. He was preceded in death by his father and his stepfather, Eugene DeLong.

Visitation hours are until 6:30 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the University of Washington Neuro-Genetic Fund, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
