Richard 'Dick' Sweley

Graveside service for Richard E. "Dick" Sweley, 89, of Salina, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, Salina.

Mr. Sweley died Saturday, March 30, 2002.

He was born Feb. 4, 1913, at Litchfield, Neb.

Mr. Sweley was a switchman and yardmaster for Union Pacific Railroad, retiring in 1976.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, of the home; a son, the Rev. David K. Sweley, Garden City; a sister, Carol Palmgren, Shalimar, Fla.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Geisendorf-Rush Smith Funeral Home, Salina, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the church, Presbyterian Manor or National Presbyterian Mariners, all in care of the funeral home, 401 W. Iron, Salina, KS 67401.

Kenneth Dean Peters

ULYSSES - Funeral for Kenneth Dean Peters, 68, of Ulysses, will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. George Peters will deliver the message. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Mr. Peters died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus, Wichita.

He was born March 29, 1934, at Liberal, Mo., the son of Kenneth Raymond and Bertha Lorene Metcalf Peters.

A Ulysses resident since 1941, he began driving trucks for Troy Cheek's Pipeline. He later worked for other businesses, including Juel Water Service, Garrison Oil Co. and Popejoy Construction. In 1956, he inherited a set of tools from his father and he began helping his friends work on their cars in the evenings and weekends out of his Dad's shop. This in time turned into Peters Automotive and Truck Service.

Mr. Peters prided himself on his various mechanical creations, including dragsters, hot rods, antiques, trucks, go-carts, scooters and mowers. He won numerous trophies for drag racing. He also loved and cared for many animals and children throughout his life.

On March 29, 1953, he married Nancy Burns at Lakin. She survives. He is also survived by his mother, Ulysses; two sons, Kenneth Jene Peters and Kenten Dean Peters, both of Ulysses; three daughters, Becca Annette Brantley and Tina Carson, both of Ulysses, and Cynthia Susette Lower, Kersey, Colo.; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials to the K.D. Peters Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Robert Harry Joyce

ULYSSES - Funeral for Robert Harry Joyce, 84, of Ulysses, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton and the Rev. Gary Gregory officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery, with military graveside service conducted by Charles B. Hart Post No. 79 of Ulysses.

Mr. Joyce died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born April 25, 1918, at Ulysses, the son of Richard H. and Estell Towler Joyce. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in civil engineering. After a short working career, he and his brother, Tom Joyce, farmed and ranched south of Ulysses. The original Joyce family-homesteaded land is still intact.

A lifetime resident of Ulysses and Grant County, Mr. Joyce was a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Legion Post No. 79, both at Ulysses, belonged to VFW Post No. 5391 at Hugoton, was a 32nd degree Mason and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He had been a resident of Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses for seven years.

On Aug. 28, 1939, he married Myrna Reeves. She died in 1982. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas Joyce; and a grandson.

He married Claudeane Tully on May 21, 1983. She survives at Satanta. He is also survived by two sons, Robert Joyce Jr., Aurora, Colo., and Richard M. Joyce, Oakley; a daughter, Rebecca Joyce, Moriarty, N.M.; two stepsons, Mark Tully, Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Merle Tully, Satanta; three stepdaughters, Sydney Manderfeld, Evanston, Wyo., Leslie Davis, Durango, Colo., and René DuPree, Hutchinson; 24 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to American Legion Post No. 79 of Ulysses or the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses, both in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Isabel Lucy Herrman

Parish vigil for Isabel Lucy Herrman, 89, of Ransom, will be 7 tonight at St. Aloysius Church, Ransom. Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Gregory LeBlanc officiating. Burial will be in Ransom Cemetery.

Mrs. Herrman died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Grisell Memorial Long Term Care in Ransom.

She was born Feb. 22, 1913, at Simpson, the daughter of Joseph N. and Mary A. Provost Lefort.

A homemaker, she was a longtime resident of Utica before moving to Ransom in 1999. She was a member of St. Aloysius Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella, all at Ransom, and belonged to EHU and Golden Circle Senior Center, both at Utica.

On May 6, 1935, she married Albert M. Herrman at Garden City. He died June 19, 1977. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Ben and John Herrman; a daughter, Loretta J. Perkins; and seven brothers.

Survivors include three sons, Joe Herrman, Garden City, Bob Herrman, Utica, and Ralph Herrman, St. Joseph, Mo.; two daughters, Rosanna Haug, Ransom, and Veronica Reddig, Salina; a brother, Leo Lefort, Utica; three sisters, Phyllis Geier, Lamar, Colo., Alma West, Crowne Point, Ind., and Rosanna Martin, Delray Beach, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 3:30 this afternoon at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, from 6 to 7 tonight at the church, and until service time Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or St. Aloysius Church, both in care of the funeral home, Box 96, Ness City, KS 67560.

Cleo Clinton Mouser

Cleo Clinton Mouser, 78, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Aug. 11, 1923, at Hooker, Okla., the son of Leroy and Esther Kraft Mouser. He graduated from Hooker High School in 1941. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Strategic Services with Underwater Demolition Team 10 as a frogman during World War II. He was sent to the South Pacific for 14 months where he was involved in seven invasions for which he received a Bronze Star for bravery.

In addition to two Bronze Stars, he was also awarded a Victory Medal, an American Campaign Medal, an Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, a Navy Good Conduct Medal and a Philippine Liberation Campaign Ribbon. In February 1999, he was awarded a Special Forces Tab by the Department of the Army for his service with the Office of Strategic Services. In April 2002, he received an invitation from the director of the CIA to attend the 60th anniversary of the Office of Strategic Services scheduled for June in McLean, Va.

After his discharge from the Navy on Feb. 16, 1946, he attended Panhandle State University at Goodwell, Okla. In 1951, he began working for Cities Service, now known as Williams Oil Co., in Straight, Okla. He was transferred to Ulysses in 1952 and to Garden City in 1972. He retired in September 1985.

Mr. Mouser was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Garden City. His special interests included spending time with his family and grandchildren, his dogs, hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, visiting the zoo, and attending reunions with his underwater demolition team Navy buddies. He had been a Scout leader for many years and helped build the chapel at the Scout Ranch in Walsenburg, Colo.

On June 2, 1952, he married Alberta Faye Fast at Raton, N.M. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Bill and Dallas Mouser, both of Garden City, and Keith Mouser, Allen, Texas; three brothers, Marion Mouser, Aztec, N.M., C.J. Mouser, Hooker, and Harland Mouser, Wichita; a sister, Letha Davis, Guymon, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; a twin brother, Leo Mouser; and a grandson.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Lee Richardson Zoo, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Danny Gene Staats

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Danny Gene Staats, 51, a longtime resident of Scott City before moving to Cimarron, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring and Steve Payne officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mr. Staats died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

He was born Jan. 3, 1951, at Montezuma, the son of Glen F. and Marjy L. Standley Staats. He graduated from Scott Community High School in 1969 and received his industrial drafting degree from Salina Vocational Technical School in 1971.

Mr. Staats worked for Ansel Manufacturing in Ulysses for 14 years and was the bookkeeper for Rons Tractor & Truck Services in Cimarron for the past five years. A Cimarron resident since 1992, moving from Scott City, he was a member of Tri-State Coalition at Scott City.

He is survived by his parents, Scott City; a brother, Ronald Staats, Cimarron; a sister, Glenda Gough, Scott City; two nieces; and four nephews.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the Shepherd's Center of Cimarron, in care of the funeral home.

May Elizabeth Jones

Johnson CITY - Funeral for May Elizabeth Jones, 76, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann officiating. Burial will follow in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.

Mrs. Jones died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

She was born Dec. 30, 1925, at Corydon, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Virginia Cross.

A Johnson City resident since 1959, she was a bookkeeper and office manager for L & M Electric Heating & Air Conditioning. A homemaker, she enjoyed working with the numerous flowers in her yard and also enjoyed gardening.

On Sept. 18, 1956, she married Lowell Jones at Reno, Nev. He survives. She is also survived by a son, John Holder, Wichita; two daughters, Linda Briggs, Rochester, N.Y., and Tina Roark, Garden City; two sisters, Bertha Andrews, Des Moines, Iowa, and Goldie Blaylock, Sedalia, Mo.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Edward Holder; three brothers, Charles, Floyd and Carl Cross; and a sister, Martha Cross.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.

Jo A. Leffingwell

ELKHART - Funeral for Jo A. Leffingwell, 56, was to be 10:30 this morning at First Church of God, Elkhart, with the Rev. Ron Crosley officiating. Burial was to follow in Elkhart Cemetery.

Mrs. Leffingwell died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.

She was born Aug. 10, 1945, at Columbus, Neb., the daughter of Vincent and Lois Bast Sandman.

A resident of Elkhart since 1978, she owned and managed DJ's Floral with her husband, Richard Leffingwell. They were married Sept. 25, 1965, at Lakin.

Mrs. Leffingwell was a member of Elkhart Chamber of Commerce, Church of God and Point Rock Golf Club, had served on the board of the Morton County Housing Authority and had managed Prairie View Manor Apartments. She enjoyed her bridge club and working with scrapbooks and crafts.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Trevor Lee Leffingwell, Elkhart, and Thad R. Leffingwell, Stillwater, Okla.; her mother, Grand Island, Neb.; a brother, Mike Sandman, Grand Island; five sisters, Barbara Teichmeier, Mary Teichmeier and Donna Trevino, all of Grand Island, Shari Armstrong, Brush, Colo., and Pat Hughes, Layton, Utah; and four grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of Harrell Funeral Home, 514 Kansas Ave., Elkhart, KS 67950.
