Thelma M. Mangold

TRIBUNE - Funeral for Thelma M. Mangold, 92, will be 10:30 a.m. MDT Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Tribune, with the Revs. Keith Fink and Harry Walz officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Mrs. Mangold died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Greeley County Long Term Care Unit in Tribune.

She was born Dec. 27, 1909, at Ellis, the daughter of Jake and Mary Walz Zerfas.

A Greeley County resident since 1943, she was a homemaker and a former cook in the Greeley County school system. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Tribune before its closing and was a life member of VFW Auxiliary No. 7521.

On Jan. 29, 1930, she married Robert Mangold at Ellis. He died Sept. 19, 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald, Tribune, and Arland of Tabor, Alberta, Canada; two daughters, Arleta Blades, Denver, and Vickie Rutherford, Garden City; two brothers, Raymond Zerfas of Ellis and Wilferd Zerfas, Ocala, Fla.; two sisters, Nathalie Reynertson, Chicago, and Loretta Jacobs, Victorville, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials are suggested to Greeley County Long Term Care Unit, in care of the funeral home.

Ferdinand 'Fred' Kaiser

Ferdinand "Fred" Kaiser, 77, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born April 20, 1925, at Collyer, the son of Nickolas and Theresia Schuster Kaiser. He grew up in Collyer and graduated from high school there. After his graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Germany. He attended Brown-Mackie College in Salina after his discharge from the service.

He moved to Garden City in 1969 and went to work as a truck driver for Western Uniform. In 1979, he was transferred to Wichita. He returned to Garden City in 1994.

Mr. Kaiser was a member of Harry H. Renick American Legion Post No. 9 and John J. Haskell VFW Post No. 2279, both at Garden City. He enjoyed watching television, his grandchildren's activities and telling war stories.

On June 6, 1959, he married Sylvia Messerschmidt at Wichita. They later divorced.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol Matthews, Garden City, and Teresa Robbins, Sachese, Texas; two sons, John and David Kaiser, both of Garden City; three sisters, Mary Conrad, Lewistown, Mont., Rose Bird, Salina, and Frances Wagoner, WaKeeney; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sharon Kaiser; and a brother, John Kaiser.

A family service is planned for later in Collyer. Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, is in charge of arrangements.

Bettie L. Owen

Graveside service for Bettie Lee Caldwell Owen, 79, of Denver, is planned for 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver.

Mrs. Owen died Sunday, May 19, 2002. She had been a resident of Red Rocks Healthcare Center in Denver for 2 1/2 years.

Born at Dighton on July 4, 1922, to William T. and Edith H. Marshall Caldwell, she attended schools there.

She and her husband, William B. Owen, lived in the Dighton and Scott City areas before moving to Denver in 1977. A homemaker, she had been an antique collector her entire life.

Her husband died in 1980. She also was preceded in death by a son, James Owen; a brother, Bill Bob Caldwell; and a sister, Barbara Cramer.

She is survived by a son, John Owen, Rochester, N.Y.; three daughters, Jane Hanchett, Denver, Janett Brush, Garden City, and Virginia Spang, Linn, Mo.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Fairmount Mortuary, Denver, is in charge of arrangements.

Beverly V. Stotesbery

HUGOTON - Knights of Columbus rosary for Beverly Violet Stotesbery, 59, of Hugoton, will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Helen Catholic Church, Hugoton. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Friends Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Eric Mason officiating. Scattering of ashes will take place later at Lake Superior, Minn.

Mrs. Stotesbery died Friday, May 17, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Nov. 7, 1942, at Minneapolis, the daughter of James and Violet Belfoure Kohler.

A Hugoton resident since 1989, she was the owner of Communication Systems Service, Hugoton, and a member of the Lady Knights at Minneapolis. She rode Tennessee walking horses for the Minnesota State Fair and Birch Lane Farms.

On May 26, 1976, she married George E. Stotesbery at Minneapolis. He survives. She also is survived by a son, Allen LeRoy Stotesbery, Brazoria, Texas; two daughters, Carolyn Sue Stoner, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Jacquelin Jean Baskin Robinson, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a sister, Linda Claiborne, Lafayette, La.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Roland James Kohler.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the St. Catherine Hospital Cancer Center, in care of the funeral home, 423 S. Main, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Michael Ray Hill

HOLCOMB - Funeral for Michael Ray Hill, 49, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michaels Cemetery in Fulton, with the Rev. Sixtus Ye Myint officiating.

Mr. Hill died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at his home in Holcomb.

He was born Sept. 22, 1952, at Garden City, the son of Robert and Evelyn Jackson Hill.

A truck driver, he had been a lifetime resident of Holcomb. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City.

He is survived by a son, Dwaine Hill, and a daughter, Janell Hill, both of Scott City; his mother, Holcomb; four brothers, Paul, John and James Hill, all of Holcomb, and Mark Hill, Lakin; and three sisters, Nancy Vaughn, Shamrock, Texas, Patricia King, Hadlyme, Conn., and Linda Maddox, Potomac, Md. He was preceded in death by his father.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Wanda Rippy

Graveside service for Wanda Rippy, 45, of Garden City, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Garnett Cemetery.

Mrs. Rippy died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born March 22, 1957, at Denton, Texas, the daughter of Kenneth and Mildred Pair Hyde.

A Garden City resident for nine months, she lived in Ottawa from 1990 to 1995 and in Garnett from 1995 to 2001. She was a certified medication aide employed at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. She previously worked at Arkhaven in Garnett and at Ottawa Retirement Village.

On June 19, 1974, she married Andy Rippy at Denton. He died Sept. 8, 1998.

She is survived by two daughters, April Rippy, Kansas City, Mo., and Nancy Swiney, Garden City; two stepdaughters, Sherry Carr, Umatilla, Ore., and Susan Munoz, Gresham, Ore.; three sisters, Vicky Patterson, Garnett, Jane Dittman, Edwardsburg, Mich., and Joyce Weibley, Centralia, Ill.; and eight grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions to help defray funeral expenses may be sent in care of Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapels Inc., Box 408, Garnett, KS 66032.

John Woodson Owen

John Woodson Owen, 97, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

He was born April 8, 1905, at Elk City, the son of Thomas and Sarah Jetter Owen. He grew up and graduated from high school at Elk City.

A Garden City resident since 1956, moving from Scott City, he worked for many years as a mechanic at Five Points Motors in Garden City.

On June 15, 1935, he married Dorothy Leatherman at Independence. He and his wife had a large antique collection, and he enjoyed building things in his shop. She died Oct. 19, 1999. He also was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Oscar and Ed Owen; and a sister, Ruby Owen.

Survivors include a brother, Earl Owen, Independence; and two sisters, Fannie Skaggs, Humboldt, and Elizabeth Watts, Albuquerque, N.M.

No service is planned. Burial will be in Elk City Cemetery.

Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, is in charge of arrangements.

James L. Shafer

SCOTT CITY - Vigil prayer service for James L. Shafer, 58, was 7 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Funeral Mass was to be 10:30 this morning at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City, with the Rev. David H. Kraus officiating. Burial was to follow in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mr. Shafer died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born May 28, 1943, at Scott City, the son of Carl F. and Alice E. Mallory Shafer.

A lifetime resident of Scott City, he was a custodian at the Scott County Hospital for more than 25 years. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

On March 16, 1982, he married Inday DeLaTorre at Garden City. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Roy and Glen Shafer, both of Scott City; two brothers, Marvin Shafer, Garden City, and Bill Shafer, Springdale, Ark.; and two sisters, Helen Hignite, Noel, Mo., and Louise Hughes, Holcomb. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Memorials to the James Shafer Education Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
