Haverkamp
Marcellus H. "Sally" Haverkamp, 79, Seneca, died Jan. 23, 2003 at a Seneca hospital. He was born April 1, 1923 on a farm northwest of St. Benedict, the son of Leo H. and Anna Fangman Haverkamp. He grew up there, attended St. Mary's School, and helped on the family farm. Mr. Haverkamp entered the U.S. Army on April 25, 1944, and served in the European theater during World War II. He was a combat engineer with the 1270th Engineering Battalion and served under General George Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Victory Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged Feb. 22, 1946. He returned to the area after the war, farming and working at Harry Roger's sawmill in Wetmore for 20 years. He also worked at the Seneca Elevator for 25 years before retiring in 1993. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church and the St. Joseph Society at the church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus 1769 for more than 50 years, the Earle W. Taylor Post 21 of the American Legion, and the Seneca Memorial Post 7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all at Seneca. He married Irene Reinecke on April 24, 1946 at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Eric Haverkamp, Seneca; two daughters, Mary Lee Sanders, Topeka, and Jane Fields, Eagle, Neb.; a brother, Melvin Haverkamp, Seneca; three sisters, Lucille Kramer, Aurora, Neb., Theresa Koch, Holton, and Leanne Baker, Topeka; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Vincent Haverkamp, on Oct. 31, 1963, and a granddaughter, Robin Fields, on May 31, 1969. Funeral services were held Jan. 27 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery
at St. Benedict. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation or St. Mary's Cemetery, and sent in care of the family.
Puvogel
Jean C. Puvogel, 58, Hiawatha, died Jan. 23, 2003 at a Hiawatha hospital. She was born Sept. 5, 1944 in Maryville, Mo., to Ralph Douglas and Francis Irene Beer Strough. She graduated from Willis High School in 1963 and from the Hillyard Vocational Technical School of Nursing in St. Joseph, Mo., in 1964. Mrs. Puvogel was a licensed practical nurse and worked in Horton Community Hospital and later the Sabetha Community Hospital. She also worked for Dr. Delbert Larson in Hiawatha as a relief nurse. She and her husband also farmed northwest of Hiawatha. She quit nursing to raise a family and then worked for a few years for Tice Drug in Hiawatha after her children went to school. She was employed as a substitute rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service Rural Route 3 for 11 years and was a full-time carrier for Rural Route 1 in Hiawatha for 13 years before retiring due to failing health in 2001. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha, where she taught Sunday school, helped with Vacation Bible School and was active in the Lutheran Women Missionary League. She held offices in county and District 1 Rural Carrier Association and served on the quality work life team for the U.S. Postal Service. She was a member of the LaGrange Community Club and the PEP Home Extension Unit, both in Hiawatha, a former 4-H project leader and she was active in the Robinson Middle School Parent Advisory Council. She was a member of the Hiawatha Community Hospital Guild. She married Leonard Puvogel on July 25, 1965 in Hiawatha. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Leroy Puvogel, Hiawatha; a daughter, Cheri Puvogel, Kansas City, Mo.; her father and stepmother, Ralph and Evelyn Strough, Horton; a sister, Rita Davis, Wetmore; and three grandchildren. Services were held Jan. 27 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. McAsey
Joseph P. McAsey, 90, Holton, died April 6, 2003 at the Jackson County Nursing Home in Holton. He was born Nov. 5, 1912 on a farm north of Holton, the son of Michael and Mary McIntyre McAsey. He attended Pleasant Grove Grade School and Netawaka High School. Mr. McAsey was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Holton. Mr. McAsey married Frances G. Nolte on Oct. 2, 1943 at Kelly. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Thomas M. McAsey, Holton; a daughter, Mary M. Jordan, Lyndon; a sister, Anna Clowe, Topeka; and four granddaughters. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. April 9 at St. Dominic's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery
west of Holton. Mr. McAsey will lie in state at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. April 8, followed by visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Mount Calvary Cemetery

Stallbaumer
Mary Catherine Stallbaumer, 82, Seneca, died April 6, 2003 at an Onaga hospital. She was taken to hospital after she became ill while visiting a daughter, Jean Ann Boeckman, in Lillis. She was born May 9, 1920 west of St. Benedict, to Henry G. and Ida Gelhaus Hulsing. She spent her early life in the St. Benedict community and attended St. Mary's Catholic School in St. Benedict. She worked at Sam Tate's grocery store in Seneca. She worked in the laundry at Country View Estates Care Home in Seneca for several years. Mrs. Stallbaumer was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca and St. Ann's Altar Society at the church. She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Benedict and St. Ann's Altar Society at the church. Mrs. Stallbaumer was a volunteer at the Sts. Peter and Paul Mission Center in Seneca. She married Eugene E. Stallbaumer on April 15, 1950, in St. Benedict. They lived in the St. Benedict community until 1979 when they moved into Seneca. He died Jan. 15, 1981. A son, Alan Stallbaumer, died Sept. 17, 1992. Survivors include two sons, Stephen Stallbaumer and Max Stallbaumer, both in Seneca; another daughter, Rose Mary Henry, Hoyt; four brothers, Victor "Bud" Hulsing and Bernard Hulsing, both in Seneca, Henry Hulsing, Topeka, and Joseph Hulsing, Omaha, Neb.; five sisters, Henrietta Holthaus and Marceline "Marcy" Meyer, both in Axtell, Florence Kohake and Mildred Kohake, both in Goff, and Ida Rose Wichman, Kelly; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. April 8 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery

Brooks
Theresa A. Brooks, 88, Delia, died April 5, 2003 at a St. Marys nursing home. She was born Jan. 26, 1915 in Salem, Mont., to Albert and Bronislawa Smigiel Kurtz. She graduated from Columbus Hospital School of Nursing in 1936. She lived most of her life in Great Falls and moved to Delia in 1996. Mrs. Brooks had worked in several hospitals in Washington and California. She worked in the maternity ward at Columbus Hospital in Great Falls, Mont., from 1951 to 1956 and then for Dr. Casey in Great Falls from 1956 until retiring in 1976. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Great Falls. She married Harvey P. Brooks on June 20, 1941 in Great Falls. He died Aug. 9, 2002. A son, Vernon Joseph "Butch" Brooks, died Sept. 14, 1997. Survivors include a daughter, Marla Bowers, Delia; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. April 8 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Emmett. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Brooks will lie in state at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. April 7. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice and sent in care of the funeral home, 714 Maple, St. Marys, KS 66536.
Anslinger
Walter S. Anslinger, 90, Topeka, died April 2, 2003 at a Topeka nursing home. He was born Dec. 18, 1912 at Osborne, the son of Henry and Rosa Henke Anslinger. He had lived in Topeka for the past nine years, and also lived in Holton and Osage City. Mr. Anslinger was a carpenter. He served in the Army during World War II in the south Pacific. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He married Edna L. Goldsmith in January 1942. She died March 25, 1978. He also was preceded in death by a stepson, Mike Wagner, in 1983; three brothers; and three sis-ters. Survivors include his second wife, Margie M. Beaghler, Topeka; five stepdaughters, Judy Thornton, Great Bend, Kathy Smith and Pat Stallbaumer, both of Topeka, Mary Krouse, Bonner Springs, and Vicki Ellis, Wichita; three stepsons, Matt Wagner, Houston, Texas, Mark Wagner, Axtell, and Rick Branson, Marion; 24 stepgrandchil-dren; and 17 stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 5 at Crable VanArsdale Funeral Chapel in Osage City. A Fort Riley honor guard conducted mili-tary graveside services in Osage City Cemetery

Gibson
William Thomas Gibson, 83, Topeka, died April 2, 2003 at his home. He was born Feb. 21, 1920 in Holton, the son of Rollo W. and Ada V. Proctor Gibson. He was a graduate of Silver Lake High School. He had lived in Topeka since 1961. Mr. Gibson joined the U.S. Army on Oct. 4, 1940. He trans-ferred to Army Air Corp and then to the U.S. Air Force, retiring June 30, 1964 as a technical sergeant. He then worked for City Ice of Topeka from 1964 to 1973 and retired in 1982 from Menninger's after 18 years of service. He was a member of VFW Philip Billard Post 1650 and American Legion Capitol Post 1. He married Betty J. Martin on Sept. 15, 1946 in California. They later divorced. Survivors include three daughters, Judy K. Kohler and Denise D. Counts, both of Topeka, and Debra Sepulveda, San Ramon, Calif.; four sons, Gary L. Gibson, Livermore, Calif., Randy R. Gibson, Aurora, Colo., Dennis E. Gibson, Topeka, and Charles J. Gibson, Lynwood, Calif.; four sisters, Alberta J. Ford, Balti-more, Md., Grace A. Helmert, Law-rence, Velma F. Burris, Shawnee, and Veda M. Sharon, Topeka; two brothers, Edwin R. Gibson, Green Castle, Ind., and Phil Gibson, Fremont, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by a grand-son, Mark Allen Sepul-veda; a sis-ter, Nellie Martin; and a brother, James Gibson. Funeral services were held April 5 at Parker-Price Mortu-ary in Topeka. Perry
Robert Eugene Perry, 76, St. Marys, died March 31, 2003 at a Topeka hospital. He was born July 1, 1926 in Delia, to Thomas Henry and Nora Loughmiller Perry. He was reared in the Delia, Emmett, and Havensville communities and attended Emmett High School. Mr. Perry was a retired farmer. He also worked for Thompson Dehydrator for 23 years and later was a welder for Tower Metal for six years. He became an employee of the city of St. Marys in 1991 and was still on the staff at the time of his death. He served in the Asiatic-South Pacific theater as a gunner's mate third class during World War II. He was decorated with the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Metal. He was a member of the Belvue United Methodist Church, Hoy-Heim Post 178 of the American Legion in St. Marys and Mr. Perry was a life member of Aubert-Walls Post 7796 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in St. Marys. He married Helen Biester in 1947. They divorced. He married Avis Fishel Rezac on Oct. 24, 1969 in St. Marys. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Ronald Perry, Belvue; a stepson, Dale Rezac, Emmett; two daughters, Dianna Trippett, Wamego, and Peggy Whitmire, Greer, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Rezac, Topeka, and Anne Boswell, Onaga; a brother, Leroy Perry, Topeka; a sister, Lorna Graves, Topeka; eight grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild. Mr. Perry was cremated. Memorial services were held April 4 at Belvue United Methodist Church. Burial with military graveside services was conducted by Fort Riley funeral detail in St. Clere Cemetery

Brown
Wilma P. Brown, 88, Atchison, died March 29, 2003 at an Atchison hospital. She was born Aug. 14, 1914 in Effingham, to William and Mabel Potter Churchill. She was raised in Monrovia and moved with her family to Atchison, where she graduated with honors from Lincoln School. Mrs. Brown was employed by the former Atchison County Nursing Home, Mount St. Scholastica College, the Atchison Senior Village Nursing Home and Mount St. Scholastica Convent in the Dooley Center. She had been a cook in private residences and served as a private duty nurse until she retired because of failing health. She was a member of Campbell Chapel AME Church. She married Herbert Brown Sr. on Oct. 7, 1933 in Atchison. He died in the 1980s. Mrs. Brown also was preceded in death by a son, Herbert "Herbie" Brown, four grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Evadna B. Jenkins and Betty Rose Brown, both of Atchison; a son, Sherman "Doug" Brown, Atchison; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Services were held April 4 at Second Christian Church. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Second Christian Church or to Campbell Chapel AME Church and sent in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home in Atchison.
Green
Roselle "Me-Sa-Was-Quah" Green, 53, Horton, died March 29, 2003, at her home. She was born Sept. 9, 1949, west of Horton, the daughter of Charles and Pauline Wahwahsuck Green. She graduated from Powhattan High School and the Vocational-Technical School in Atchison. She worked for the United Tribes of Kansas and Southeast Nebraska. She was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe and Kennekuk Church on the Kickapoo Reservation west of Horton. She married Larry McKinney in 1976 in Hiawatha. He preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Shan Green, Mayetta, and Charles McKinney, Horton; two brothers, Gary Knoxsah Green and Dale Dupuis, both of Horton; three sisters, Nellie Shopteese, Vivian Wishteyah and Charlene Whitebird, all of Horton; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 1 at the Community Building on the Kickapoo Reservation west of Horton. Burial was Wednesday at Kennekuk Indian Cemetery
west of Horton.
Leach
Roy E. Leach, 61, Topeka, died March 29, 2003 at a Topeka nursing home. He was born Dec. 30, 1941 near Soldier, to Walter Scott and Dolly G. Baker Leach. He spent his early life near Soldier and attended Cedar Hill School five miles south of Soldier. He worked in an oak barrel factory in Holton and later was a mechanic at Utterback Used Cars in Holton. Mr. Leach moved to Topeka in 1965 and was a machinist at United Manufacturing. He later worked for Hydra Tool, where he was a machinist for more than 15 years. He married Dorothy Askren. They divorced. Survivors include a son, Russell Leach, Salina; his mother, Dolly Leach, Holton; two brothers, Arley Leach, Holton, and Chester Leach, Chapman; and two sisters, Arlena Hinton and Edith Burress, both in Topeka. Graveside services were held April 2 at Rochester Cemetery.
Hickman
Dolly M. Hickman, 70, Holton, died March 28, 2003 at her home. She was born May 6, 1932 at Denison, the daughter of Oscar A. and Zada White Robbins. Mrs. Hickman worked in the labor room at Huron Hospital in Huron, S.D., from 1963 to 1966. She was a member of Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton. She married Glenn Evans in 1954 in Missouri. They divorced. She married Charlie Hickman Sr. on June 29, 1968, at Holton. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Kathy L. Richard, Chatsworth, Ga., and Cristy L. Mick, Holton; a stepdaughter, Patricia Ann Forbes, Wichita; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hickman was preceded in death by a stepson, Chuck Hickman, and three brothers, Tommy Robbins, Alfred Robbins and Joe Robbins. Funeral services were held April 2 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial was in Holton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Jackson County Friends of Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home.
Humphrey
Richard Alan Humphrey, 65, Topeka, formerly of Holton and Larkinburg, died March 27, 2003 at a Topeka hospital. He was born Oct. 16, 1937 in Holton, the son of Homer H. and Nora Shaffer Humphrey. Mr. Humphrey lived in the Holton and Larkinburg communities before moving into Sheltered Living in Topeka in 1976. He had worked for T.A.R.C., Inc. Workshop in Topeka. He attended Central Presbyterian Church in Topeka. Survivors include a sister, Jean Marie Haag, Holton; two brothers, Wendell H. Humphrey, Topeka, and H. Dean Humphrey, Boonville, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held March 31 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial was in Larkinburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Sheltered Living or T.A.R.C., Inc., and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, 1101 W. Fourth St., Holton, KS 66436.
Price
Raymond "Bud" E. Price, 83, Topeka, died March 27, 2003 at a Topeka hospital. He was born March 18, 1920, in Topeka, to Lloyd and Edna Barnes Price. He lived in Topeka most of his life. Mr. Price was a crane operator for Kile Construction for 40 years and was a longtime member of Local 101 Heavy Equipment Operators Union. He served in the Army in the Phillipines during World War II. He married Dora Ann in 1968 in Oskaloosa. She survives. Other survivors include four children, Darrel Price and Sheryl Lynn Lovelady, both of Hoyt, and Jude Price and Peggy Rae Price, both of Topeka; two stepdaughters, Debbie Cook, Topeka, and Janet Rusher, Hoyt; a brother, Jack Price, Eskridge; four sisters, LaVetta Moore, Leona Holly, Edna Carey and Maxine Hogan, all of Topeka; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services were held March 31 at Davidson Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association and sent in care of the funeral home, 1035 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka, KS 66608.
