Bernice Wolfe Drees

Bernice A. Wolfe Drees, 84, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born March 8, 1918, at Daykin, Neb., the daughter of Ralph and Ida Heidemann Mead. The family moved to northern Finney County in 1927. She attended grade school at Sunrise, a one-room school, and was a graduate of Garden City High School and Garden City Junior College.

On Jan. 1, 1939, she married Jim W. Wolfe at Dighton. They lived in Dighton for a short time before moving to southern Lane County to farm. He died Sept. 4, 1979. On Aug. 7, 1982, she married Edgar H. Drees at Garden City. He died Dec. 30, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Shirley Blake; and a brother, Dale Mead.

Mrs. Drees was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1932 and was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and the Seniors Group. Her special interests centered on church and gardening. An avid gardener, she enjoyed sharing what she grew with her family, friends and neighbors.

She is survived by three sons, J. Douglas Wolfe, Bedford, Texas, R. Dean Wolfe, Clayton, Mo., and David A. Wolfe, Austin, Texas; two sisters, LaRee Thomas, Dighton, and Betty Specht, Lamar, Colo.; a brother, Melvin Mead, Garden City; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present, at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Arthritis Foundation, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Lorrene M. Patterson

Lorrene M. Patterson, 82, of Hays, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 12, 1919, in rural Ellis County, the daughter of Mervin L. and Charlotte Thomas Moore.

Mrs. Patterson had worked as a bookkeeper for Glassman-Staab Mechanical Contractors, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hays.

She married Charles E. "Pat" Patterson on Nov. 13, 1943, at Walker Air Base. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Charles M. Patterson, Hays; three daughters, Patty Drussel, Garden City, Judy Sopronyi, Harrisburg, Pa., and Jean Willite, Huntsville, Ala.; a sister, Velma Johnson, Hays; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Lloyd Moore; two sisters, Mabel Campbell and Alice Rogers; and two infant sisters, Mamie and Lucille.

Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, with Dr. Richard Glascow and the Rev. William C. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens in Hays.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 1:30 p.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1075 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, CO 80204.

Helen M. Dinkel

LEOTI - Vigil service for Helen M. Dinkel, 91, was 7 p.m. Sunday at Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg. Funeral was to be 11 this morning at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Leoti, with the Revs. Charles Mazouch and Ted Stoecklein officiating. Burial was to follow in St. Theresa Cemetery in rural Wichita County.

Mrs. Dinkel died Friday, May 3, 2002, at Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg.

She was born July 28, 1910, in rural Wichita County, the daughter of John and Theresa Goetz Bauck.

A homemaker, she had been employed as a restaurant cook and baker in Garden City, Goodland and Colby before her retirement.

On Sept. 12, 1932, she married Andrew A. Dinkel. They later divorced.

She is survived by two sons, John Dinkel, Huntsville, Ala., and Frank Dinkel, Holyrood; two daughters, Barbara Stoecklein, Phillipsburg, and Mary Ann Emery, Stockton; four brothers, Joseph, George and Clement Bauck, all of Leoti, and Carl Bauck, Garden City; two sisters, Margaret Weiser, Leoti, and Lucille Page, Albany, Wis.; 20 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Walter; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials to the Helen Dinkel Memorial Fund may be made in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti.

Vernon Peck

Vernon Peck, 46, of Garden City, died Friday, May 3, 2002, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Garden City.

He was born Dec. 23, 1955, at Lamar, Colo., the son of Glen E. and Shirley Longworth Peck. He attended grade school in Lamar before moving to Garden City when he began the seventh grade.

After graduating from Garden City High School, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1975 to 1977. After his discharge, he returned to Garden City where he had been working in the procurement department for Southwestern Bell for 20 years.

Mr. Peck attended First Southern Baptist Church of Garden City, was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Gold Prospectors Association, and enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycle, reading and playing cards.

On Sept. 20, 1975, he married Cindy Morales at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Crystal Hernandez, Kirkland, Wash; a son, Trinity Peck, Lancaster, Calif.; his mother, Garden City; and four brothers, Robert Peck, Onslow, Iowa, Billy Peck, Lansing, Danny Peck, Dodge City, and Lee Peck, Garden City. He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Southern Baptist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating.

Memorials are suggested to the National Rifle Association, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Olen L. Schmidt

MONTEZUMA - Funeral for Olen L. Schmidt, 70, of Montezuma, was to be 2 p.m. today at Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Donald Koehn, Charles Schmidt and Glen Yost, ministers, were to officiate. Burial was to follow in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.

Mr. Schmidt died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma.

He was born March 11, 1932, at Dalhart, Texas, the son of Noah and Ida (Schmidt) Schmidt.

On Dec. 25, 1953, he married Louise C. Friday at DeRidder, La. They moved from DeRidder to Montezuma in September 1992. A farmer and carpenter, Mr. Schmidt was a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Lola Koehn, Mindanao, Philippines, Marliese Schmidt, Meade, and Rosalita Schmidt, Montezuma; three brothers, Earvey, Virgil and Milton Schmidt, all of DeRidder; five sisters, Juanita Koehn, Dorothy Schmidt, Delores Decker and Virginia Koehn, all of DeRidder, and Rose Loewen, Del Norte, Colo.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wilbert Schmidt; and a sister, Joanna Schmidt.

Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Heart Hospital of Wichita, in care of Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Roslyn Elaine McLendon

ULYSSES - Memorial service for Roslyn Elaine McLendon, 52, of Ulysses, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating.

Mrs. McLendon died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.

She was born May 27, 1949, at Midwest City, Okla., the daughter of James and Alene Gilzow Wilson.

On June 4, 1966, she married Don McLendon at Sherwood, Ark. They moved from Lake Village, Ark., to Ulysses in March 1989.

Mrs. McLendon was a secretary for the Ulysses Housing Authority for 13 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her granddaughter, and also enjoyed painting furniture and traveling. She was known for having one of the first decorative ponds in Ulysses.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Jason McLendon, Garden City; a granddaughter; her mother and stepfather, Alene and Leon Schlosser, Little Rock, Ark.; and a brother, James Wilson, Little Rock. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Donita Wilson.

Friends may sign the register until 8 tonight at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the Rocky Mountain Camping Program at Ulysses, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Bart Berning

Funeral for Bart Berning, 79, was Friday, May 3, 2002 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marienthal, with Rev. Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial was in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Marienthal.

Mr. Berning died Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at the Via Christi Regional Medical Center, Wichita.

He was born on Jan. 10, 1923 in Scott City, the son of Joseph and Veronica Heili Berning Sr. He was a lifetime resident of Marienthal and was a farmer and a substitute mail carrier for the Marienthal rural route.

On Sept. 12, 1950 he married Teresa M. Baker in Marienthal. She died Nov. 25, 1991 in Scott City.

He is survived by four sons, Larry Berning, Lakin, Jesse Berning, Scott City, Leroy Berning, Gordon, Neb., Galen Berning, Marienthal; four daughters, Linda Berning, Leoti, Shirley Berning, Karen Berning, Vera Berning, Marienthal; three brothers, John Berning, Wichita, Joseph Berning, Jr., Marienthal, and Edwin Berning, Leoti; one sister, Evelyn Stegman, Marienthal. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Memorials are suggested to Masses or St. Mary Catholic Church in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.

Twila F. Sutherland

Funeral for Twila Faye Sutherland, 73, of Gate, Okla., will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Friends Church, Gate, with the Revs. Lyle Whiteman and Dale Snider officiating. Burial will be in Knowles (Okla.) Cemetery.

Mrs. Sutherland died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at her home on the family ranch northwest of Gate.

She was born Oct. 4, 1928, on the family homestead north of Knowles, the daughter of Gurthrie William and Ethel Maude Gilbert Bond.

A homemaker, she was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church of Gate.

On July 14, 1945, she married Jinx Sutherland at Arnett, Okla. He survives. She is also survived by four daughters, Deloris Little, Hinton, Okla., Shalia Powers, Wynnewood, Okla., Rhonda Hutton, Garden City, and Renee Berry, Oakdale, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and five sisters.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Myatt-Seeger Funeral Home, Laverne, Okla. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home, Box 909, Laverne, OK 73848.
