Dorothy Gardner Dodson

Funeral for Dorothy L. Gardner Dodson, 87, of Garden City, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel, Wichita. Burial will follow in Wichita Park Cemetery.

A former Wichita resident, Mrs. Dodson died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Jan. 20, 1915, in Allegheny County, Pa., the daughter of Albert and Margaret Heil.

In the late 1930s, she moved to San Francisco and worked in the shipyard building ships for World War II. After marrying C.W. "Red" Gardner on Dec. 2, 1944, they moved to southwest Kansas after the war. She married Wilbur Dodson on Oct. 9, 1978, at Wichita.

Mrs. Dodson had been employed with the rural grade school and high school in Ensign, at Eckels Department Store in Dodge City, and at St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita. A homemaker, she loved to fish and garden.

She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann Trent, Garden City; a grandson; a granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Garden Valley Retirement Village, 1505 E. Spruce St.

Reuben H. Koehn

MONTEZUMA - Reuben H. Koehn, 91, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma.

He was born Nov. 18, 1910, in McPherson County, the son of Henry W. and Lizzie (Koehn) Koehn.

A resident of the Montezuma area for most of his life, he was a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. He enjoyed his family gatherings and giving treats to his grandchildren, traveling and camping and also enjoyed farming and preparing the drills for the planting season.

He and Frances Jantz were married Aug. 1, 1939, at Independence. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Ray A. Koehn and Danny Koehn, both of Montezuma, and Lorin Koehn, Copeland; three daughters, Donna Koehn and Myrna Wilson, both of Copeland, and Linda Nickel, Center, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Erma Koehn, Montezuma; 21 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Joan; five brothers, Fred, John, Abe, Tobe and Pete Koehn; and a sister, Adina Jantz.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Charles Schmidt and Donald Koehn, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

James E. 'Jim' Deaver

Vigil service and rosary for James E. "Jim" Deaver, 52, will be 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Inurnment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Deaver, of Dodge City and formerly of Garden City, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Facility in Wichita.

He was born Sept. 14, 1949, at Garden City, the son of Larry and Eva Jennings Deaver.

Mr. Deaver was an electrician and recently had been employed as the floor manager in the parts department at the Harley Davidson dealership in Dodge City. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City.

Survivors include a son, Jason Deaver of Arkansas; his parents, Garden City; two brothers, Mike and Tim Deaver, both of Garden City; and a sister, Sue Fansler, Greene, Iowa.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Facility, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

Alfred D. Appl

LEOTI - Funeral for Alfred D. Appl, 76, will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Leoti, with Glenn Calhoun officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery.

Mr. Appl died Monday, April 29, 2002, at the Wichita County Long Term Care Unit in Leoti.

He was born Sept. 4, 1925, in rural Wichita County, the son of Paul and Myrtle McCurdy Appl.

A lifetime resident of Wichita County, he had been the manager of Collingwood Grain at Ingalls and Selkirk, retiring in 1990. He worked for Western Hardware from 1990 until 1999.

Mr. Appl was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS California, and was a member of the Leoti VFW.

On June 30, 1957, he married Darlene Hetzler at Leoti. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Richard A. Appl, Tyler, Texas; a daughter, Shawn Lynn Guest, Valley Center; two stepsons, Bobby Salem, Salina, and Rick Salem, Denver; a sister, Daisy Kelly, Leoti; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to the Wichita County Health Care Center or the Wichita County Long Term Care Unit, both in care of the funeral home.

William M. 'Bill' Helton

SATANTA - William Marvin "Bill" Helton, 75, of Satanta, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Aug. 13, 1926, at Salina, the son of William Asbury and Clara Elizabeth Ellis Helton.

On Aug. 11, 1946, he married Ima June Jones at Haviland. They moved from Greensburg to Satanta in 1948. Mr. Helton worked for Panhandle Eastern Gas Co. for 42 years, owned and operated the Pic Theater in Satanta for 30 years, and was a flight instructor for 40 years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion, both at Satanta, and served as a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received the Aviation Honor Award in 1990, the Outstanding Senior Citizen Award in 1993 and the Merit Award in 1977 and 1981, from the Satanta Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Susan D. Cornell, Miami, Kathy A. McCloskey, Dodge City, Pamela J. Brazell, Great Bend, and Billie J. Woods, Jay, Okla.; two brothers, Robert Helton, Houston, and James L. Helton, Colorado; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-grandson; and a brother, Harvey Helton.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta. Military graveside service at Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta, will be conducted by Satanta American Legion Post No. 276.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Fund or the Satanta American Legion and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Ai Tran

Funeral for Ai Tran, 55, was to be 2 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, followed by cremation.

She died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

She was born March 5, 1947, in Vietnam, the daughter of Hoe To and Khoan Tran.

In 1986, she married Can Ngu Lu at Liberal. He died April 29, 2002.

She is survived by a brother, Dan Su, Denver; and a sister, Nguyen Hoang, San Diego.

Can Ngu Lu

Funeral for Can Ngu Lu, 55, was to be 2 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, followed by cremation.

He died Monday, April 29, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Nov. 16, 1946, in Vietnam, the son of Huyen Lu and Cuc Ly.

In 1986, he married Ai Tran at Liberal. She died April 30, 2002.

He is survived by three brothers, Can Thap Lu, Cuu Lu and Luc Lu, and three sisters, Nuoi Tam Lu, Muoi Te Lu and Ai Nu Lu, all of Garden City.

Mabel L. Schmitz

Rosary for Mabel L. Schmitz, 81, will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Enfield Funeral Home, Norton. Mass of the Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Norton, with the Rev. Joseph Thalanany officiating. Inurnment will be in Norton Cemetery.

Mrs. Schmitz, a longtime resident of Norton, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Logan Manor in Logan.

She was born Aug. 9, 1920, at Natoma, the daughter of Timothy and Lovella Griffith Davis. She attended Stockton public schools and Florida State University.

On Sept. 27, 1941, she married Max F. Schmitz at Osborne. They made their home in Stockton, Oakley, Russell and Plainville before moving to Norton in 1961. She worked as a food service supervisor.

Mrs. Schmitz was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Altar Society and had belonged to the St. Thomas Altar Society in Stockton and Sacred Heart Altar Society in Plainville. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and the Kansas Food Supervisors Association. She enjoyed reading, yarnworks, dancing, puzzles and singing.

In addition to her husband, of the home in Norton, she is survived by four daughters, Kay Smith, Hays, Dr. Beverly Schmitz-Glass, Garden City, Denise Schmitz and Betty Schmitz Rossouw, both of Norton; a half sister, Evelyn Corella, Redding, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Michael Timothy Schmitz; and three half brothers, Willard Davis, Lyle Yowe and Ronald Yowe.

Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Auxiliary or Logan Manor, both in care of the funeral home.
