May Hunter

SCOTT CITY - May Hunter, 70, died Friday, July 26, 2002, in Dallas.

She was born Oct. 22, 1931, at Crawford, Colo., and grew up in Scott City. She later moved to Overland Park, where she was an insurance agent at Huddleston-Mitchell Insurance Agency until her retirement in McKinney, Texas. An avid gardener, she also was a Tiger Woods fan.

She is survived by her husband, Herold Hunter, Lamar, Colo.; her children, Bryan Hunter, Linda Waltz, Susan Jones, Barbara Martin, Betty Harper and Gene Hunter; 13 grandchildren; a brother, Van Ernest "Buzz" Burch; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Gary; a sister; and four brothers.

Funeral will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Restland Wildwood Chapel, Dallas. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 1615 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX 75207.

V. Wayne Douglass

Funeral for V. Wayne Douglass, 81, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Church of the Nazarene, Garden City, with the Rev. Charles West officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City

Mr. Douglass died Friday, July 26, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 30, 1921, at Pierceville, the son of Charles M. and Mabel Ira Ward Douglass. He graduated from Ingalls High School.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a staff sergeant, he moved to Dodge City and began working for Fairmont Foods Co. In 1957, he moved to Garden City and continued with Fairmont Foods, working as a route salesman until his retirement.

Mr. Douglass attended the Church of the Nazarene, served on committees for the Senior Center of Finney County and enjoyed playing pool, dominoes and cards, as well as fishing and camping.

On April 11, 1944, he married Irene McMinn at Pueblo, Colo. She survives. He also is survived by three daughters, Janice DeMoss, Syracuse, Debbie Amos and Kathy Leone, both of Garden City; two brothers, Robert Douglass, Placerville, Calif., and Lawrence Douglass, Valley Springs, Calif.; two sisters, Dorothy Ray, Kaw City, Okla., and Irma Reed, Palmdale, Calif.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Darwin, Leonard, Kenneth, Dallas and Yates; and two sisters, Stella Imel and Ellen Vath.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

James C. 'Poppy' McBride

LEOTI - Funeral for James C. "Poppy" McBride, 82, was to be 2 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Rick Just officiating. Burial was to be in Leoti Cemetery with full military graveside honors.

Mr. McBride died Friday, July 26, 2002, at Wichita County Hospital in Leoti.

He was born May 25, 1920, in Ness County, the son of James Earl and Mildred Mae Brown McBride.

A Leoti resident since 1954, he was a self-employed mechanic and owner/operator of McBride Shop. He belonged to the United Methodist Church and was a five-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served as an aviation machinist in World War II. He enjoyed fishing, working in his yard and, most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.

On June 8, 1946, he married Joyce Church at her parents' home in Dighton. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, James Donald and Thomas Eugene, both of Wichita, and Dennis Richard, Garden City; a daughter, Marilyn Joyce Wilbur, Leoti; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Leoti Emergency Medical Technicians or Wichita County Amusement Association, both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti.

Geneva Rivera Saenz

Vigil service for Geneva Rivera Saenz, 81, will be 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Carlos Garcia-Pena, S.J., as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Saenz died Friday, July 26, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Feb. 19, 1921, at Leon Guanajato, Mexico, the daughter of Eulojio and Victoria Munoz Rivera.

She came to the United States in 1935 and had lived most of her adult life in North Platte, Neb., before moving to Garden City in October 2000. A homemaker, she enjoyed crocheting, gardening (especially flowers), catering and cooking. She belonged to St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City.

On Nov. 3, 1951, she married Rosalio Saenz at North Platte. He survives. She also is survived by three daughters, Vicki Kahler, Gulf Port, Miss., Beatrice Rodriguez, Oklahoma City, and Yolanda Morales, Dodge City; a son, Genaro "Jerry" Saenz, Garden City; six brothers; two sisters; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary School Endowment, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Ernest W. Higgins

ULYSSES - Ernest W. Higgins, 71, of Ulysses, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Feb. 2, 1931, in Morton County, the son of Clarence William and Lily Eleanora Johnson Higgins.

Mr. Higgins was employed at Panhandle Eastern Pipeline for 32 years. After retiring from the company in 1988, he then worked for five years as a consultant for Anadarko Petroleum Corp. He was a member of Church of Christ and the Lions Club, both at Ulysses, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

On Sept. 4, 1954, he married Ruby More at Clayton, N.M. She survives. He also is survived by a son, David Higgins, and two daughters, Chloe Teeter and Leilani Sullivan, all of Ulysses; four brothers, Leroy and Jack Higgins, both of Rolla, Bill and Eugene Higgins, Elkhart; five sisters, Opal Erickson, Portland, Ore., Lola Chambers, Valley Falls, Isabelle Perry and Jewell Burrows, both of Hugoton, and Dorothy Milburn, Rolla; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Violet Galliger.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Church of Christ, Ulysses, with the Rev. Warren Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the Lions Club of Ulysses, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Alice C. Hampson

DIGHTON - Alice C. Hampson, 93, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.

She was born Aug. 21, 1908, on the family farm in Ford County, the daughter of John Alvin and Sarah Lenora Heath Melia. She attended school at Ford, graduating from high school there.

In 1930, she met Roy Hampson when she came to work for her aunt in Lane County. They were married Jan. 4, 1933, at Ashland. She and her husband farmed and fed cattle until 1976. They built their own home in Dighton and moved off the farm and into town in 1960. He died June 16, 2001. She also was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, John, Albert, Harold, Clyde, Alvin and Don Melia; two sisters, Viola Melia and Ruth Ellen Norton; and a grandson.

Mrs. Hampson was a member of the United Methodist Church, Spring Creek FCE and the Methodist Church Quilting Club and was a former 4-H leader. She loved to quilt, having made 175 quilts for her family members and helping with more than 350 other quilts. She enjoyed family reunions, especially the cooking and the organizing.

She is survived by a son, Alvin Hampson, Nikiski, Alaska; a brother, Royce Melia, Arriba, Colo.; a sister, Zelma Simpson, Kansas City, Mo.; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Randy Jellison-Knock officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 3 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or the J.O.Y. Center, both in care of the funeral home.

Geneva L. Edsall

Vigil service for Geneva L. Edsall, 62, will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Cline's Mortuary, Hays. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Heart Of Mary Catholic Church, Hays, with the Rev. David Metz officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Mrs. Edsall died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

She was born Jan. 18, 1940, at Emmeram, the daughter of Mike and Florence Brungardt Gerhardt.

A homemaker, she had lived in the Victoria and Hays areas. She was a member of Immaculate Heart Of Mary Catholic Church, Hays.

On Aug. 5, 1961, she married Lester Unrein at Hays. He died Nov. 7, 1976. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Bonnie Gerhardt; and a sister, Mary Hertel.

On July 8, 1995, she married Frank L. Edsall at Hays. He survives. She also is survived by two daughters, Brenda Haynes, Hays, and Donna Hashenberger of Ellis; four brothers, August Gerhardt of Victoria, Anton Gerhardt, Liberal, Herman Gerhardt of Russell, and Michael Gerhardt, Springfield, Mo.; four sisters, Felicitas Windholz of Victoria, Anna Robertson, Kansas City, Mo., Katie Rohr, Hays, and Betty Younger, Garden City; and four grandchildren.

Visitation hours are 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, the donor's choice or Masses, in care of the mortuary, Box 252, Hays, KS 67601.

Vincent N. Berry (Duffy)

ULYSSES - Vincent Nathaniel Berry (Duffy), the infant son of Randal and Michelle Dowell Berry and his birth mother, Debbie Duffy, all of Garden City, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born July 4, 2002, at Garden City.

In addition to his parents and his birth mother, he is survived by a brother, Jory Duffy, Garden City; his grandparents, Edward and Shirley Dowell, and Ron and Wanda Limper, all of Ulysses, and Jack Berry, Austin, Texas; his great-grandparents, Betty Boughner, and Dale and Jimmie Limper, all of Ulysses, and Dale Volden, Liberal; two aunts; and an uncle.

Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Aug. 3 at Patterson Avenue Church of God, Ulysses, with the Rev. Sam Bynum officiating.

Memorials to the Vincent Nathaniel Berry Medical Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Chester Ronald Davis

Chester Ronald Davis, 76, of Bishopville, S.C., died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the Carolinas Hospital in Florence, S.C.

He was born in Goodhope, Mo., the son of Roy and Kate Nelson Davis.

Mr. Davis was a retired State Farm agent in Ulysses and Hugoton. He was a member of St. Andrews Church of God in Bishopville, a former member of Patterson Avenue Church of God in Ulysses, and a U.S. Navy veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie I. Stafford Davis; two sons, R. Dwayne Davis, Spartenburg, S.C., and S. Mark Davis, Bishopville; two brothers, Robert L. Davis, Hugoton, and Max Davis, Denton, Texas; three sisters, Erma Lee Cudney, Velma Duckwood and Leora Graham, all of Ava, Mo.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Sunday at Patterson Avenue Church of God, Ulysses.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Patterson Avenue Church of God Missions.
