Thomas A. Gruver

SCOTT CITY - Thomas A. Gruver, 90, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born Feb. 17, 1912, in Russell County, the son of Sanford L. and Mary E. Baldwin Gruver. At the age of 4, the family moved to Scott County. He attended grade school and high school in Manning and earned bachelor of science and education degrees from Fort Hays State University.

He worked as a government range examiner in southwest Kansas from 1938 to 1939, was a high school teacher at Shallow Water from 1940 to 1946 and became superintendent for the grade school and high school for 4 1/2 years. In the mid-1950s, he was a teacher and superintendent at Missouri Flats in Gove County for three years. In 1960, he was elected as Scott County representative to the State House of Representatives, where he served for six years. He became county commissioner in 1968 and served for eight years. Throughout his lifetime, he was a farmer and stockman. He had moved to Scott City in 2000 and belonged to the United Methodist Church of Scott City.

On Aug. 3, 1941, he married Neva Gassert at Washington. She survives. He also is survived by a daughter, Arlita Hummelke, Highland; three sons, Gene Gruver, Pittsburgh, Pa., Royce Gruver, Scott City, and Norval Gruver, Independence; two sisters-in-law, Eva Darlene Gruver, Ulysses, and Hilda Gruver, Scott City; a cousin; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Visitation hours are 3 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church Camp Lakeside Scholarship Fund or the Bryan Education Center Scholarship Fund, both in care of the funeral home.

Lorene Jane Pederson

SUBLETTE - Lorene Jane Pederson, 91, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Wellington Parc in Owensboro, Ky.

A Kansas native, she owned and operated several newspapers in Kansas, Oregon and California, along with her husband, Ernest V. Pederson. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Owensboro.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Jane Coppick; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a sister-in-law, Pauline Miner, Sublette. Her husband died July 19, 1984.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette, with the Rev. Larry Steadman officiating.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or Habitat For Humanity, both in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Charles 'Doug' Barlow

SYRACUSE - Graveside service for Charles Douglas "Doug" Barlow, 55, will be 9 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Coolidge Cemetery, with the Rev. Gene Teel Jr. officiating.

Mr. Barlow died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Aug. 17, 1946, at Syracuse, the son of George E. and Bertha L. Snelson Barlow.

He attended Parsons State Training School and then helped his mother work at the Motel Grande in Syracuse before moving to Garden City in 1990, when he was trained and cared for by Southwest Developmental Services Inc. (now known as Bethphage), a center for the handicapped. He lived in a group home on Henderson Street in Garden City and worked at Prestige Laundry until his health failed.

Mr. Barlow attended Bible Christian Church in Garden City. He enjoyed bowling, dining out and visiting with people.

He is survived by a brother, Robert Barlow, Haxton, Colo.; and two sisters, Marge Stewart, Manter, and Mary Wright, Syracuse. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Barlow.

Visitation hours are until 8 MDT tonight at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to Southern Baptist Church of Syracuse, in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Emil Chris Jurgens

SCOTT CITY - Emil Chris Jurgens, 79, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the Kansas Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge.

He was born May 4, 1923, at Venango, Neb., the son of Chris Ben and Bertha Jurgens.

Mr. Jurgens had lived in Leoti from 1967 until moving to Scott City in 1971. He was a welder and mechanic for Hess Land and Cattle and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. In May 2002, he moved to Fort Dodge.

On Nov. 5, 1945, he married Gail Darlene Morris at Gering, Neb. She died Jan. 19, 1979, at Scott City. He also was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

Survivors include a son, Chris Jurgens, Scott City; a daughter, Carol Kearns, Columbus, Ga.; a sister, Ocie Laird, Torrington, Wyo.; and six grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at West Lawn Cemetery, Gering.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Mortuary in Mitchell, Neb. Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, is handling local arrangements. Memorials are suggested to Scott County Hospital, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home.

James Orval Jones

SATANTA - James Orval Jones, 78, of rural Satanta, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Nov. 11, 1923, at Hutchinson, the son of James Elisha and Eva Ellen Alger Jones.

A lifetime resident of Haskell County, he was a businessman and farmer. He farmed from 1947 to 1989 and owned and operated Farm Service & Supply Inc., Sublette, from 1961 to 1988.

Mr. Jones attended Pleasant Prairie Church Of God in rural Satanta, was a member of Satanta American Legion Post No. 276, the National Rifle Association and the Cedar Bluff Lake Association and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

On June 1, 1947, he married Mayola Stephenson at Garden City. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Dr. Randy Jones, Yakima, Wash., and Jim Jones, rural Ulysses; a sister, Ethelda Krebs, Spokane, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, W.H. Bell; and a daughter, Brenda Dunlap.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Prairie Church Of God, rural Satanta, with the Rev. Fred Hauck II officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta, with graveside rites conducted by Satanta American Legion Post No. 276.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to Satanta American Legion Post No. 276 and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Rilla LaFaye Franklin

HUGOTON - Rilla LaFaye Franklin, 88, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.

She was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Stevens County, the daughter of Ira and Linnie Mills Hanner. She graduated from Hugoton High School.

A Stevens County resident until moving to Missouri in 1951, she returned to Hugoton in 1974. She worked as a licensed practical nurse in hospitals and nursing homes in Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas and had worked at Pioneer Manor for several years.

Mrs. Franklin was a former member of the Ladies Club in Elkhart, a bowling team member and a Girl Scout leader in Elkhart.

She is survived by a daughter, Myrna Sipes, Bethany, Okla.; a brother-in-law; a sister-in-law; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three sisters, June Greenwood, Lolene Hanner and Rena Mueller.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 6 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Frank 'Doc' Castle

DIGHTON - Frank "Doc" Castle, 89, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born March 18, 1913, in Galesburg, the son of Clair Allen and Alta Jane Castle.

On Dec. 1, 1937, he married Winnie Neely in Erie. She died Jan. 17, 1991.

He was raised in Galesburg and graduated from high school there. He farmed for many years before moving to Dighton in 1959. He then went to work for the Kansas State Highway Department, retiring in 1978. After retirement, he still worked part-time for the Lane County Solid Waste Department. He loved working in his garden and tending to his lawn. He enjoyed going to the Joy Center, drinking coffee and visiting with his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, Carl Castle and Clarence Castle, and one sister, Mary Seefeldt.

He is survived by two daughters, Donna Riley of Dighton and Patricia Batchelder, Holcomb; three granddaughters, Renee Schooley, Salina, Marlece O'Brien and Regina Ming, both of Dighton; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Dighton, with Pastor Randy Jellison-Knock officiating. Burial will be at the Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Calling hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday.

Memorials should be sent to the Lane County Long Term Care Unit.

Violet L. Seba

TRIBUNE - Violet L. Seba, 95, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Greeley County Long Term Care Unit in Tribune.

She was born Nov. 14, 1906, at Plainview, the daughter of Julius and Annie Anderson Rasmussen.

A homemaker, she had been a Greeley County resident since 1932. She was a member of the former St. Paul Lutheran Church at Tribune and belonged to VFW Auxiliary at Tribune.

On June 25, 1930, she married Henry Seba at Vona, Colo. He died May 8, 1988, at Tribune. She was also preceded in death by a brother, two sisters, two daughters and two sons.

Survivors include four sons, Jim Seba, Tribune, Gary Seba, Lubbock, Texas, Norman Seba, Kansas City, and Don Seba, Bella Vista, Ark.; three daughters, Donna Murphy, Hulbert, Okla., Viola Jordan, Springfield, Ore., and Valeta Rasmussen, Lamar, Colo.; three brothers, Ralph Rasmussen, Barstow, Calif., Julian Rasmussen, Holyoke, Colo., and Milford Rasmussen, Lamar; two sisters, Freda Sheen, Elko, Nev., and Norma Lindholm, Burlington, Colo.; 31 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Joanna Grimshaw officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials are suggested to the Greeley County Long Term Care Unit or Greeley County VFW, both in care of the funeral home, Box 161, Leoti, KS 67861.
