Eva Fern Howard

SCOTT CITY - Graveside service for Eva Fern Howard, 91, was to be 11 this morning in Stonington (Colo.) Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Nuckolls officiating.

Mrs. Howard died Friday, July 12, 2002, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.

She was born April 3, 1911, at Fowler, the daughter of Harrison Fillmore and Ethel Katherine Clark Crissman. She attended schools in Fowler and Stonington.

A Scott City resident since 1990, moving from Springfield, Colo., she was a retired restaurant cook. She attended First Baptist Church of Springfield.

On Sept. 7, 1932, she married James Wesley Howard Sr. at Johnson City. He died Jan. 29, 1958, at Springfield. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Naomi Fern Howard; a son, Elmer Clinton Howard Sr.; a grandson; four brothers, Shirley C., Elmer T., Gipson O. and Francis H. Crissman; two sisters, Lola L. Jenkins and Ina R. Crissman; and an infant sister.

Survivors include a son, James W. Howard, Derby; three daughters, Alma Kay Day, Dighton, Thelma Fay Hoover, Scott City, and Bernice Torrontegui, Green River, Wyo.; a daughter-in-law; a sister, Dorothy O'Connell, Denver; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials are suggested to Park Lane Nursing Home, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.

Leonel Erasto Guevara

Leonel Erasto Guevara, 28, of Garden City, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

He was born April 8, 1974, at El Salvador, the son of Juan and Rosaura Guevara. A Garden City resident since 1992, he enjoyed sports.

He is survived by his father, El Salvador; four brothers, Jose Ismael, Jose Feliciano, Samuel and Saul Arturo Guevara, all of Garden City; three sisters, Valvina Guevara and Rosa Emerita, both of Houston, and Maria Guevara, Garden City; and 17 nieces and nephews. His mother died in 2000.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. John Janas officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. today and Sunday at the funeral home.

Albert A. Hlaus

Rosary for Albert A. Hlaus, 83, of Wilson, will be 5 p.m. Sunday at Foster Mortuary, Wilson. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Wilson. Burial will follow in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Wilson, with military honors conducted by John F. McManus American Legion Post No. 262.

Mr. Hlaus, a retired farmer/stockman, died Thursday, July 11, 2002.

He was born Jan. 21, 1919, at Wilson.

Survivors include a stepson, Richard Rezac, Kennewich, Wash.; and a stepdaughter, Sharon Soukup, Garden City. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 1994; three sisters, Anna Staudinger, Mary Hlaus and Agnes Hlaus; and five brothers, Joseph, James, Frank, Charles and Emil Hlaus.

Visitation hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the mortuary, Box 533, Wilson, KS 67490.

Dessie M. Robertson

Funeral for Dessie Myrtle Robertson, 77, of Garden City, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with the Rev. Dan Lundgren officiating. Burial will be in Larned Cemetery.

Mrs. Robertson, a former Larned resident, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born July 30, 1924, at Ash Valley, the daughter of Porter and Myrtle Smiley.

A resident of the Larned area since 1960, moving from Larned to Garden City, she was a bookkeeper. She belonged to the United Methodist Church of Larned and volunteered her time at the Senior Center, St. Catherine Hospital and Garden City Community College, all at Garden City.

On May 18, 1945, she married Charles "Hank" Robertson Jr. at Larned. He survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Dewees King, Garden City; two sisters, Ada Ebersole, Wichita, and Olive Johnson, Larned; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, John Theodore "Ted" Robertson; and four brothers, Orlie R. Smiley, Guy Smiley, Clair Smiley and Gerald Smiley.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and until service time Saturday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Senior Center of Finney County, in care of the mortuary.

Connie Rogers

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Connie Rogers, 81, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mrs. Rogers died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

She was born Sept. 14, 1920, at Clearwater, the daughter of Charles R. and Ruby E. Martin Harrington.

A Scott City resident since 1949, moving from Arkansas City, she was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Scott City and the Eastern Star.

On June 15, 1941, she married Richard James Rogers at Winfield. He survives. She also is survived by two sons, Steven L. Rogers, Topeka, and Brent A. Rogers, Scott City; two daughters, Laylene Janssen, Scott City, and Kathleen A. Settles, San Antonio; a brother, Harold Harrington, Mulvane; and a sister, Geraldine Young, Wellington. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the Scott County Emergency Medical Technicians, in care of the funeral home.

Jerry Dwight Sroufe

Funeral for Jerry Dwight Sroufe, 46, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Sroufe died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Feb. 2, 1956, at Garden City, the son of Phillip G. and Opal N. Nusser Sroufe. He graduated from Garden City High School in 1976.

A lifetime resident of Garden City, he worked with his father at Phil's R.V. in Garden City. He was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church and also belonged to the Kansas Bowling Association and the Trinity Lutheran softball team. He enjoyed bowling, playing softball, watching his nieces and nephews in sports, the Kansas City Chiefs, KU basketball and KSU football.

He is survived by his parents, Garden City; three brothers, Michael D. and Jeffrey D. Sroufe, both of Fort Collins, Colo., and Bobby D. Sroufe, Hollyrood; a sister, Betsy D. Glunt, Holcomb; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elmer L. and Vida M. Sroufe, and Martin G. and Melusine K. Nusser.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or St. Catherine Hospice, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Gerardo J. Guillen

SCOTT CITY - Gerardo J. Guillen, 65, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born March 30, 1937, at Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Jose and Maria Rodriguez Guillen.

A Scott City resident since moving from Chihuahua in 1995, he worked for Brookover Cattle as a cowboy for seven years.

On April 14, 1985, he married Patricia Munoz at Chihuahua. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Gerardo Guillen, and two daughters, Yareli Guillen and Erica Hermosillo, all of Scott City; three brothers, Israel and Lorenzo Guillen, both of Chihuahua, and Salvador Guillen, Los Angeles; a sister, Socorro Guillen, El Paso, Texas; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 12 brothers and sisters.

Vigil prayer service will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City, with the Rev. David H. Kraus officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Visitation hours are 2 to 8 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Gerardo Guillen Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Jack J. Randolph

LAKIN - Vigil service for Jack J. Randolph, 68, will be 7 tonight at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lakin. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms as celebrant. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Mr. Randolph died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Aug. 5, 1933, at Spearville, the son of E.J. and Anna Arends Randolph. He attended Spearville schools until the family moved to Kearny County in 1947. He graduated from Deerfield High School in 1951.

A Kearny County, Deerfield and Lakin resident since 1947, Mr. Randolph worked for KN Energy for 10 years, later working in farming and at Ford Motor Co. In 1967, he opened Randolph Repair in Lakin, retiring in 1994.

He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and a former member of the Eagles Lodge of Garden City and the Knights of Columbus at Lakin. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, the outdoors, crossword puzzles and spending time with his family.

On April 8, 1953, he married Leona Reinert at Garden City. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Gary Randolph, Searcy, Ark.; a daughter, Mary Harmon, Tescott; his mother and a brother, Clifford Randolph, both of Lakin; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; a son, Joseph Lee Randolph; and a brother, Joseph Roy Randolph.

Visitation hours are until 5:30 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the Joseph Lee Randolph Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

Dorothy Zerr

Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy Zerr, 78, of Grainfield, was 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park, with the Rev. Mark Berland as celebrant. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Zerr died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Gove County Medical Center in Quinter.

She was born July 7, 1923, in Gove County, the daughter of Anton and Clara Kress Phlieger.

On Aug. 12, 1946, she married Paul Zerr at Park. A homemaker, she worked alongside her husband on their farm near Grainfield. She enjoyed cooking and baking, with one of her specialties being banana bread. She also liked crossword puzzles, playing bingo, and collecting antiques and Avon bottles.

Mrs. Zerr was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Sacred Heart Catholic Church Altar Society, all at Park.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Larry Zerr of Park and Gary Zerr, Oakley; three daughters, Lou Shelton, Scott City, Kathy Hartman, Grainfield, and Darlene Zerr, Scottsbluff, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Magdalene Phlieger, Hays; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Martin Zerr and Josephine Tatro, both of Garden City. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Pauline; five brothers, Adam, Mike, John, Pius and Walter Phlieger; and two sisters, Regina and Theresa Meyer.
