Herman Haag

DIGHTON - Funeral for Herman Haag, 78, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Dighton, with Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in the Dighton memorial Cemetery, with graveside rites performed by the American Legion Post No. 190.

He died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson.

He was born Feb. 27, 1924, at Alamota, son of Conrad and Elizabeth (Bahm) Haag. He attended country schools in Lane County and attended Dighton High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Haag married Nina Lois Davis Sept. 26, 1943, at Ness City. He was a lifetime resident of Lane County and a lifelong farmer.

He enjoyed playing pool and the other activities of the Joy Center, Dighton, and especially enjoyed his farm activities.

Haag was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton, Odd Fellows Lodge No. 286, American Legion Post No. 190 and was a past member of High Plains Roamers Wit Club of Dodge City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Allan Eugene Haag; one daughter, Brenda Louise Haag; and three sisters, Hilda Houghton, Pauline Fullmer and Rosa Fosdick.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Jon Haag, Dighton; two grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.

Calling hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Boomhower Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials can be made to Joy Center or the United Methodist Church, in care of Boomhower Funeral Home.

Linda L. Pilgrim

Funeral for Linda L. Pilgrim, 52, will be 10 a.m. Friday at the First Southern Baptist Church, Garden City. Rev. Randy Caddell will officiate. Burial will be in the Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

She died Friday, June 28, 2002, at her home in Garden City.

She was born April 17, 1950, in Garden City. Her parents were Andrew C. and Mamie L. (Shafer) McCormick.

Pilgrim spent most of her life in Garden City. She attended schools in Garden City and Wichita East High School, and she also attended Garden City Community College. At GCCC, she obtained a degree in early childhood education.

She married Bill Pilgrim on Nov. 4, 1989, in Garden City.

She was the director of Community Day Care No. 2 for many years. Her special interests included going to the Lee Richardson Zoo with her husband, playing bingo, dancing, country music, her Noah's Ark collection and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church and the Ladies VFW Auxiliary Post No. 2279. Her close friend was Linda Williams, Garden City.

Pilgrim was preceded in death by her father and one daughter, Deedra Lane.

She is survived by her husband; her mother, of Scott City; four sons, Scott Heydinger and Chance Butler, both of Garden City, Patrick Pilgrim and Joseph Pilgrim, both of Texas; one daughter, Chandra Smith, Garden City; five brothers, Mark Vassar, Holcomb, Roger Vassar, Garden City, Clyde McCormick, Texas, Terry McCormick, and Larry McCormick, Colorado; two sisters, Tonda Smith, Garden City, and Carol Burns, Oklahoma; and 10 grandchildren.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Garnand Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials can be made to the Linda L. Pilgrim Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home.

Lorena Gulick Lingo Ball

LIBERAL - Funeral for Lorena Gulick Lingo Ball, 95, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Kismet United Methodist Church, with Pastor Nathan Stanton presiding. Burial will be in Kismet Cemetery, Kismet.

She died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Wheatridge Care Center, Liberal.

She was born May 10, 1907, in Eureka, to William and Lena (Drake) Gulick. She was a longtime Kismet-area resident before moving to Liberal. She was educated in Kismet schools and one year in McPherson.

On Nov. 25, 1926, she married Emery Ball in rural Kismet. After their marriage, she was a homemaker and helped her husband farm. She was a member of the Kismet United Methodist Church, Kimball Club of Plains and the North Plains Social Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her step-father, Edward Lingo, one infant son, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by two sons, Duane Ball, Kismet, and Darryl Lee Ball, Garden City; one daughter, Donna Marie Walker, Kismet; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great, great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours will be 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home with family present to greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be sent to Kismet United Methodist Church, American Cancer Society or Donors Choice in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second St., Liberal, KS 67901.

Marilyn J. Murphy

Johnson CITY - Marilyn J. Murphy, 59, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

A memorial service was at 11 a.m. today at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson City, with Pastor David Kaufmann officiating. The funeral was to be at 2 p.m. today, at Peacock Family Chapel, Lamar, Colo., with Kaufmann officiating. Interment was in Fairmount Cemetery, Lamar. Visitation hours were 9 a.m. today until service time at Peacock Family Chapel. Peacock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Murphy was born Nov. 11, 1942, in Lamar. She lived in Johnson City until her death.

Survivors include her mother, Marie Sanders of Lamar; a daughter, Debra Higgins of Auxvasse, Mo.; a brother, Larry Sanders of Salt Lake City; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Sanders, and a sister, Carolyn Trujillo.

Jeffrey Curtis Rhea

OAKLEY - Funeral for Jeffrey Curtis Rhea, 41, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Oakley. Revs. Glenn and Barbara Patterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakley Cemetery.

He died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in a vehicle accident in Logan County.

He was born May 10, 1961, in Coffeyville, to Harold Lockard Rhea and Eileen Layton Rhea.

Rhea was a lifetime Oakley-area resident and a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Oakley, Oakley Oddfellows Lodge and the Hi Plains Historical Society.

He was previously married to Lucy Bales and Vicki Russell. His special companion was Patti Bath, Oakley, who survives.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Stuart Layton Rhea.

He is survived by his parents, of Oakley; two sons, Alan Michael Rhea, Reeds Springs, Mo., and Russell Cameron Rhea, Huntsville, Wis.; one brother, Marshall Rhea, Oakley; and four sisters, Patricia Stockham and Nancy Howard, Garden City, Cathy Leighton, Quinter, and Julia Repshire, Edgerton.

Visitation hours are 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, Oakley. Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Jeff Rhea Memorial Fund in care of Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, 217 Freeman St., P.O. Box 221, Oakley KS 67748.

Blanche L. Cheney

SELDEN - Funeral for Blanche L. Cheney, 78, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rexford Community Church, Rexford, with Pastor Lane Purcell officiating. Burial will be in the Rexford Cemetery. Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Pauls Funeral Home in Selden and 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church in Rexford.

She died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Presbyterian St. Lukes Hospital, Denver.

She was born May 22, 1924, in Rexford to Joseph Turrell and Avis Phillips. As a child, she lived on a farm north of Rexford. She went to school at Hopewill Country School and was a member of the Rexford Community Church.

On Dec. 1, 1940, she married William Cheney in Colby. After her marriage, they lived on a farm north of Rexford. She was a homemaker who enjoyed reading, scrapbooks, visiting with friends and cats.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Earl Cheney and John Cheney; two brothers, Don and Clifford Turrell; and one grandson.

She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Korte, Garden City, and Lois Hake, Montrose, Colo.; two brothers, Clyde Turrell, Rexford, and Billy Jo Turrell, Colby; one sister, Lola Skiles, Colby; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Joan Cobb Thuran

Funeral for Joan Cobb Thuran, 73, of Moscow, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, with the Rev. Bill Ripley officiating. Burial will be in Moscow Cemetery.

Mrs. Thuran died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at her home.

Born Sept. 18, 1928, at Bridgeport, Conn., she was the daughter of Walter and Astrid Johnson Pearson. She graduated from Hamden (Conn.) High School in 1946, went to nursing school at Grace New Haven School Of Nursing in 1949 and became a registered nurse. She worked for Grace New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Conn., then worked for Undercliff TB Sanitarium from 1950 to 1953 in Connecticut.

On Oct. 3, 1953, she married Lloyd F. Cobb at New Haven. He died Nov. 21, 1970. She later married Elton H. Thuran.

Mrs. Thuran moved from Florida to Moscow in 1989. She was a member of the Eastern Star NJ Hamden Grange in Hamden; served as a Pink Lady for the Hospital Auxiliary of Winter Haven (Fla.) Hospital; belonged to the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, was a board member of the Moscow Senior Citizens Center, and was a former member of the Friendly Neighbors Extension Unit and the Moscow Federated Women's Club, all at Moscow.

She is survived by three sons, Lee M. Cobb, Paterson, N.J., Brian P. Cobb and Walter H. Cobb, both of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Sandra Mitchell, Moscow; and 10 grandchildren. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Ingeborg Anderson Pearson; a stepbrother, Hjalmar Anderson; and a stepsister, Elsa Flyntz.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church of Moscow, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.
